OH and I have been talking, not the first time, as to what we can do with the amount of weeds in the garden... we just cannot keep up anymore..
Living in a terraced house with 90cm high fencing on both side (German norm) and having neighbours on both sides that are useless with their gardens we have more than our fair share of weeds... On the one side he has, up to now, always mowed once a year when we have begged asked him to...now nothing and the grasses/weeds etc are over a metre high and as usual we are getting all the seeds. On the other side he works away and is only home once a month - the result is the same, just not so high as he does mow when he arrives at some point..
There really is no point whinging about it any more, we have to do something...
I have changed my planting to the shoe horn type...basically trying to get things bushied up so that weeds can't develop so well...works to a certain degree I suppose - it's not my way of gardening but hey ho !! This year for the first time I used a contact weedkiller for the worst patches but I'd rather not do that every year.
Of all the ideas that we have had we are back to bark chippings which would help against the weeds, the back and part of the garden is gravel anyway.
However, - we are surrounded by trees and loads of sacks full per year...we have a leaf vac thingy which we blow the leaves from the beds onto the grass and then into sacks - or suck and shred them...
If we put bark chippings on, how much are we going to lose when we blow the leaves off. Can we blow the leaves off - does anyone have their garden covered with bark chippings??

I use bark chippings for the same reason that you're thinking of using them RF. The weeds/seeds from the playing fields are a constant pain. They work well but I don't have to clear any leaves from flower beds. I should think bark chippings might be a complete pain if you suck up leaves as we bought a leaf vac and only used it once as our garden is littered with small oak twigs and they kept jamming the thing up.
