Built in the mid 19th century, part of it is decorated with four bronze panels, cast from captured French guns, depicting the four great victories of the person it was built to commemorate. In the early 1900's a confidence trickster "sold" it to an unknowing American tourist for £6,000 claiming it was for sale to pay off Britain's war loan to the United States.

In a barren and rocky place, further north than Moscow, about the same latitude as Hudson Bay, a colourful surprise.

I overlook a bend in a river, was built by William the Conqueror early in the 11th century and was converted in to a country house in the early 17th century. Am rumoured to be haunted and have featured in an episode of Most Haunted.

Welcome back NO - hope you had a good holiday!
I'd forgotten about this!
The place is the UK andwhen it says it was converted into a country house it is on a par with saying something the size of Buckingham Palace is a country house!!

Please ignore my previous submission - I was having a blonde moment and for some reason didn't do a "WHERE AM I?" but a "WHAT AM I?".
Try this one: I'm a listed building and am linked to Malcom X.

I've never been to either but I love castles. I was supposed to go to Warwick once but the car broke down Warwick is well worth a visit Plocket. We took the boys a few years ago. It was spring and the grounds were beautiful - carpets of daffodils everywhere. There were also people dressed up in medieval costume, sword fighting and tents where dressed up folk were acting out being medieval doctors , herbalists etc...
