It is over 60 metres tall and it has a station named after it. It was designed by Christopher Wren and Robert Hooke.

We went past it when we were in London a few weeks ago but it was being tarted up so was covered in netting ;D
I'm the first of my kind to be opened in the UK and date from 1654.

Nope sorry NO - I don't think Castle Howard had even been built when this place was opened

Well it couldn't have been anything very ostentatious during Oliver Cromwell's time (least said about him the better! ) so how about somethng practical like a bridge?
|
|
|
Post by Plocket on Sept 30, 2008 13:37:20 GMT
No it's not a bridge, or a stately home, but you would visit one for social interaction ;D

Oooo! I thought I'd got it then, but the first London coffee house was 1652

I think I might have been slightly misleading on reading back the facts - I've done some more research and it seems I wasn't the first (although it's a close call) but I'm still in existence whereas your London Coffee House doesn't seem to exist any more Blodau. You are SOOOO close

Mr Wiki says:
Oxford's Queen's Lane Coffee House was established in 1654 and still exists. London's first coffee house was in St Michael's Alley, Cornhill, but there's just a plaque now. UK's first coffee house set up in Oxford in 1650 by a man called Jacob.

Thanks P. Don't give up now. It was fun trying to guess what it might be and doing the research. I now know more about coffee houses than I did ;D
I shall go away and put on my thinking cap (now where do you suppose that saying comes from??)

Ooo-er Blod , that's a bit brief innit? Are we in England, Britain, or what?

Post by blodau on Oct 2, 2008 9:28:36 GMT
Sorry NO. You're right. Trouble is it always seems so obvious when you know.
Right. We are still in the UK and I'm a physical feature rather than say a building.

I can only think of Banbury at the moment : Ride a Cock Horse to Banbury..... but it holds a hobby horse festival - nothing to do with racehorses!!!

Post by blodau on Oct 2, 2008 14:26:17 GMT
Nope. Sorry folks, apparently it was a showjumper (and an Olympian at that!) not a racehorse (which kind of spoils the alliteration of my first clue ) There is a car park in his memory.
