Thought it might be interesting to get everyones views on different coloured veg. What has anyone grown and do they taste the same as the traditional colour. Have copied these from another thread to get us started ;D I believe the new black tomatoes, beige carrots and blue flesh potatoes are set to make a big comeback next year. These used to be grown in Victorian times but fell out of favour when newer varieties were introduced. can`t tell you much about disease resistence as not much is known. I know Wisley did a trial of beige carrots one year not sure of the outcome but you can purchase the seeds now so maybe they were successful. hope this helps. Interested to hear your comments on the blue or purple potato. Here in New Zealand we have a similar potato called a Maori potato. It is quite small and elongated, looks black when dug up, but turns purple when cooked. Oh, and it's quite delicious! Hi Annbess and Roan, it's interesting to here views on some of the unusual coloured veg you can apparently get these days. I'm not sure on some, maybe because of the traditional colours we are used to. I reckon some of my carrot seeds were cross contaminated with a pale coloured one, only had an odd few and I have to say whilst they looked odd they tasted like, well carrots ;D Any chance of a piccy of the Maori potato Roan, can't imagine having a heap of purple on my dinner plate ;D Hi Chuckles We have grown them in our garden, but don't have any at the moment. Found this picture though, just to give you an idea. This variety is called Tutaekuri Thanks Roan, what can I say WOW what a fab colour, still not sure how it would look on a plate I've just ordered these to try, from The Real Seed Site that Skarloey mentioned Sweet Chocolate sweet pepper - A chocolate-brown sweet semi-bell pepper Orange Banana Tomato - A fine heirloom tomato - orange and slightly bent! Gold Medal Multicolour Beefsteak Tomato Originally from the Ben Quisenberry Collection, this is a large, sweet, juicy golden beefsteak that is mixed colours inside: yellow , pink, and orange! The colours are swirled together - even inside White Beetroot

I ordered the purple potato, a purple haze Carrot and a green and orange striped middle large tom. And LL send me seeds for purple podded peas but the peas are green so maybe that does not count. This thread will have to stretch well into the new year if ever I am to comment on how they did.

Hey I lost this thread. In this pic you can see the Purple haze carrots which were lovely and kept colour after cooking. Lovely sweet taste. I had black skinned Schwartze Hungarin spuds. They were bright purple under the skin and then very white. Turned the cooking water blue and for a moment I though the spuds being yellow had gone green. That was a bit of a scare. Baking or frying them was better. They are lovely and tasty that way but simply cooked I think a tad on the dry side. Good to know the Zebra does not have to go orange and green stiped but mildly yellow thanks for that. The purple toms never arrived and the replacement was a dissappointment taste wise. The curved thingy in the first pic was supposed to be a yellow cucumber but it was ripe as it was and already forming too much seed so I suppose it will never get yellow. Maybe the last one for harvesting seeds instead of cucumber I hope evry one is having a much fun with these veg as I am.

Chuckles, did you harvest any white beetroot, if so what did you think ? I don't think I will grow them again, although the taste was fine, I just didn't like the colour, it was quite off putting and I can't imagine making Borsch with the white variety

I sure did JL, posted on the Beetroot trials thread Mine haven't done quite as well as I thought they might but I've never grown them before so have nothing to compare with. Got a bit curious today and pulled the 3 largest looking ones up. Have cooked and peeled them to have with my chicken salad tonight. The largest one is just a bit smaller than a medium sized egg. They smell good ;D Well they tasted good Just inspected the rest of the crop and nothing looks like it's going to fatten up they are only as thick as my finger and 1" long, maybe they have been dry in the RB praps I should have watered them more. I sowed them end of April so they should ready now shouldn't they ? Am I too late to try sowing some more I wonder ? I pulled the rest up because of thier lack of size and didn't get round to sowing anymore but I'll try them again next year

I tasted my first Green Zebra or should I say yellow and green zebra? It was lovely though a very nice sweet tom and no matter what fungus tries to get at it I will try it again next year. ( the non tasty Olive tom got blight and is now binned the Zebra though having one or two brown leaves is doing fine. next time I will remove all infested leaves even when in doubt as I do want more fruits of this one ) Side stepping it a bit: Beetroot and white funny indeed but why did they stay so small? I have red crapaudine beetroot going and as it is carrot shaped wonder when on earth to pull them up. How do you know a beetroot is ready.
And yes Isabella veggies are good fun despite the hard work.
