;D I thought we only swapped seeds and cuttings. Worm swapping? A new concept within the GW system ;D ;D ;D In case the poor wriggley ones don't manage the lingo you can send them to me RF. Dutch worms are well known for speaking more than one language due to the country being so small they cross borders all the time They won't mind chatting up the three newcomers.

It is a wonder they got through border control without passports ;D My strelitzia regina is nearly touching the ceiling now! Everytime a new leaf starts to grow I am hoping for it to be a flower stem!!! How big can it get (new house with taller ceilings required at this rate ) x Tig

I've had one for about 3 years and it hasn't flowered yet It looks healthy enough though - I think I'll keep it indoors because if I put it out, I'll forget about it!!

Phew - you and Tig and Cheery will be the death of me....you have all wonderful exotic things in your gardens and you post all over the board and...ooo I want them !!!
How are you coping with the wind and the bananas this year andy??
The Ricinus looks great - don't forget to post some pics when everything is flowering - I will just be more envious but I will forgive you...maybe!!

We've not had it too windy so far RF. I'm feeding them every other day at the moment and the ones down the bottom of the garden....the M. Basjoo planted in the ground which were the tall ones from a few years ago and have now come up as suckers....are really strong and healthy.
Things like the Ricinus are easy to grow Rf. I suppose with anything slightly exotic, you need winter protection in Germany so you can't leave stuff like cannas out all year.

I can't leave Cannas, Dahlia's, Gladioli or Fuchsia's etc. out here at all. We could have a mild winter but somehow the winters are getting longer..
This last winter, I lost many perennials, including a couple of very hardy Fuchsia's even that would have normally stood minus 15 - it was the length of the winter that finished them off I think.

Thanks for sharing the cestrum flowers Andy, I just need to find some to smell now Everything is looking lush on the 'exotic' front. Any signs of activity on the tree fern? Mine is still the same, bald! Would you like to adopt and raise a baby callistemon rigidus? I still have 7 orphans to rehome, they should be tough, born and bred in Staffordshire ;D x Tig

Im not a great lover of hardy callistemon Tig...they seem a bit whispy and thin. Thank you for the offer though. I think the next thing to get is an oleander. They love the sun and will go down pretty low. yep, the tree fern has bitten the dust im afaid....im GUTTED

Can you grow Oleander from seed in the UK Andy? I am up for trying anything once - and if my bottlebrushes come anywhere near the superb show Spruance has on his garden thread I will be one happy 'mother'! My crepe ginger is still growing in the garden, if a little slowly - not sure I have put it in the best spot My bougainvillea has shed most of its bracts but I put that great daft Monstera out and it is growing and spreading like mad at the moment! And the Hibisicus Syriacus is full of promise .. And I have enough Leycesteria formosa growing to start a mini plantation x Tig

That Jasmine you have Andy it does have the most gorgious scent. It's the the same as the one I planted in the garden in Portugal and managed to get cuttings from, alas only 1 of the 3 I had has survived. Now then Oleander, I've seen them for sale as shrubs in Wilkos and I happen to have some seed from one that grows where I holiday in Portugal. The seed pods are probably over a year old now and I'd forgotten all about them. The pods have dried and split open and have loads of feathery type seeds bursting from them, you can have some to try Tig if you think it's worth a go. I'm sure there are enough to share around with others who would like to try too

I'd love to give them a go Chuckles I've had a google and found that they can be a challenge to germinate! Noted how toxic they are too Think I may be getting a flower at long last on the strelitzia, there is a different 'tip' starting to emerge from the middle this morning x Tig

I'd love to give them a go Chuckles I've had a google and found that they can be a challenge to germinate! Noted how toxic they are too Well I've just fetched them out of the shed and these are them just as I found them, note it says 2006 One pod has completely burst open and is full of what looks to me like good seed. There are a couple of smaller pods too and I've pulled 2 apart and there are seeds in them too. If you think they look ok I'll send you some Don't ask what colour they are ;D Anyone else want to try them just shout up

Remember in June I received these from Tig... Bottlebrush (Callistemon rigidus) and Pomegranate (Pudica) well look at them now....they feel at home methinks. Does the Bottlebrush need pinching out at some point?? RF

Well done, they obviously went to a good home and are showing their appreciation RF Personally I am not going to 'tip' the callistemon rigidus because the newest growth will be more prone to frost damage I thought I would wait and see how they do over winter, and if the new wood does die back at the top they should resprout on the older stem (I know nothing, this is just my 'best' assumption ) x Tig

Hows everyone doing on the 'exotic' front? Update on my strelitzia .. it was not a bud forming but twin leaves It has now sent up another shoot so I have doubts about getting a flower this year, may need to move into a house with higher ceilings at this rate! The mimosa pudica out-grew the front bedroom window, got planted into a bigger pot and put on the front porch a few weeks back. I wasn't sure if it would die on me, but no, it actually appears happier and healthier, loads of new growth and covered in flowers which seem more fluffy and brighter pink And this morning I spotted that my crinum powellii has flowered, once again from the base. I will probably get a photo later ;D The Dendrobium that my neighbour bought me for looking after her greenhouse back in May has done really well and is sending up five new flower stems! The flowers that were on it originally are still looking good as well, it must be an easy one to care for x Tig

I have read that they can take up to six years to flower (that is Strelitzia Regina). Mine is rather large in the leaf department, but I reckon it might need some sunshine .. although some say it doesn't like full sun ~ good job I'm a patient woman ) (Thanks for the nom Cheery - I think the mimosa pudica is quite pretty too ;D) x Tig

Well I think I have given the tree fern long enough. It still feels quite solid in the crown, but had done b@gger all! I know when to throw in the towel The strelitzia has thrown up another 'odd' shoot ... this time I think it might be <betternotmentionitjustincaseitisn't> OH keeps touching it I have told him off several times! Men ... I'll keep you posted x Tig
