The colocasia 'black magic' was from a Wyvale GC..it has burgundy coloured stems amd the leaves are green when they unfurl, turning a deep black colour as they mature.
OOH CBB...I'm rather taken with them thar black and green ones... ;D

RF....how's the Fatsia doing ? Hi andy...well it has been outside now for 3 weeks although I had to wrap it in fleece a couple of times. I thought at one point that it might have red spider mite but it seems OK - will let you know later about that. I think that I have hardened it off completely now. A neighbour has already seen it and I have been told that "House Aralia's" as they are called here, should not be put outside.....mmmmh - she is in for a shock isn't she!!!!! RF EDIT: I have forgotten to say that I bought a Passion Flower today - trouble is that there wasn't a label on it - I don't know what variety it is - pretty daft really.

Anyone know how long fatsias live for? Do they keep going?
After the effort to move ours from the pot to the border tonight OH will fume if it expires!

Today I repotted last year's alocasia bulb in fresh compost...the bulb had been in the garage in dry compost all winter...and it was already putting out fresh growth... ;D
Put it on the GH staging...everything's crossed....

Do you know Cheery - I am really rather proud of my fatsia....and I am the only one in the area that has one outside!!
The comments up to know weren't too bad...just wait until the autumn/winter and the "houseplant" is still outside......

I wonder if it will thank me in the middle of winter Tig.
My new passiflora has buds on it - 5 already and my Musa is coming along as well now. The only thing that isn't happy is the Alocasia bulb - it doesn't seem to be doing anything at all.

Well I do prune it back every year - it is 3 years old this year. I brought it back from Hungary and it was just a tiny cutting then.

I brought it up from the cellar at the beginning of March Andy and pruned it back and potted it on in fresh compost etc.
It is the first year that the leaves haven't been scorched by the sun. How old do they have to be to start flowering?

Mine's half the size of yours and flowers every year (and produces small fruits). Don't know what triggers them into flower though

I reckon it looks like an Epiphyllum - Orchid Cacti SR. I have a red one too. Infact I've really neglected mine and it has been out in the poly all winter and survived I noticed a couple of buds on it today but the plant itself looks like it should be put on the compost heap

Thanks Chuckles. Name sounds familiar so I'll go with that. You ought to see the leaves on my plant. Some dying, some scorched, some half eaten..........and it hasn't been re potted for many years. Only 6 flowers this year so p'raps I'll give it a treat!!

RF They're not particularly slow growing although keeping them in a pot will slow them down. One good thing about Fatsias is they can be cut back if they get too leggy or tall. Don't forget to keep them fed during summer ! Pics

Ok Andy - here you are. This is the pic from 5th May as it was just starting to grow and this is the pic from 5 mins ago There is a bit of a difference isn't there. Do you think it is on a "Freedom for Fatsia's " Campaign here in Germany!! RF

;D ;D ;D That's about all it should do for now though RF. Those leaves will toughen up and droop and then later you should get the flowers out of the top. It will explode like a slow motion firework again next spring. As if 2 or three feet isn't enough!! ;D They are such beautiful leaves when thay are so new though!!

EDIT: I have forgotten to say that I bought a Passion Flower today - trouble is that there wasn't a label on it - I don't know what variety it is - pretty daft really. Andy or anyone - the first flower has just opened on my Passion flower ......it is a beauty!! Look - I am thrilled!! Now then - the difficult part. I don't know what variety this is and only the Passiflora caerulea will survive here. I don't suppose anyone has an idea what mine could be? I know that I am asking a lot as there as so many varieties. RF
