It looks like caerulea to me RF. Which should be good news as they're pretty tough, unlike most of the species.

I'd echo superuthie's comments.
As for Caerulea being the only passiflora that survives in Germany, you didn't think a fatsia would survive there 6 months ago !!! ;D

Thanks SR and Andy - well with a lot of fleece and TLC I may get it over the winter unless we get a really hard one.
Yep Andy - I am amazed at the Fatsia, even my OH who was more disbelieving than I was has fallen in love with it. One neighbour at a BBQ this last weekend mentioned dryly that she has, a rather smaller version, on her windowsill. It was the same person that remarked that I had what looked like a banana plant on the terrace as well.........my reputation as a rose gardener seems to be getting a severe knock, methinks!!!

well yesterday I had my first day in the garden for over a week (been poorly)...and what did I do? I dug up my trachycarpus fortunei from where it had been sulking in the front of the flower bed..and planted it lovingly in a MINORMOUS pot (50:50 JI No 3 & MP compost) ...do you know what? over night it has transformed from a droopy-draws mardy-bum to a GLORIOUS green fan palm...sigh...it's much happier. Worth wearing myself out. ;D

RF RF...I am taking a leaf out of your book ;D This year my ensete maurelii will be too big to come back indoors for the winter (it's almost 6' now) so I'm planting it in the front garden for the summer ;D...should raise a few eyebrows....it will look nice with the gunnera (altho that's still v small)

Well done Cheery - at least I won't be alone when the "men in white" come knocking at my door!! Do show us a pic when you can
BTW - how is your Colocasia behaving. Mine has been in soil for 2 months now and isn't showing any signs of wanting to do anything at all. I have had a broogle and the bulb is still hard, so it hasn't rotted -. well unless it turns to stone when it dies!!
Pleased that you are finally feeling a bit better.

Cheery...not sure if you can remember my big Ensete maurelli last summer (have a look at "operation bombsite" in the garden gallery). Well it was monsterous...far to big to bring into the conservatory so i cut every leaf off it and the growing tip and took it to work where it remained in the corner of a greenhouse heated to frost free.
Imagine my absolute amaizement when i popped up the nursey last week and saw the most gorgeous red banana. It had sat dry and dormant all winter until april when it was put outside and covered with a fleece if frosts were forecast and it was incredible.
Worth thinking about CBP

Thanks Andy ;D RF...the alocasia from last year is sulking in a pot of fresh compost by the GH door... when I potted it up it looked like it was starting into growth again but nothing's appeared above the surface yet. The new one in the conservatory is just sprouting ;D fantastic.....

Today I bought a plant labelled 'Ethiopian Banana', it was like the leaning tower of Pisa in its pot, so I have repotted and straightened it up. Having had a google I can't find an Ensete that looks like it though, it has very dark (deep purple) mottled leaves, is it sick?

It does look rather impressive doesn't it - I hope that it should have deep purple mottled leaves and not that it is a dreaded lurgy!!

That's what I'm hoping RF It has got some new sideshoots forming, but they haven't got the purple markings (yet!!) Don't know whether to try and take them off and pot them up separately or leave it to settle into its new pot x Tig

It's perfectly normal Tig...don't worry You can take the side shoots off but i found it more trouble than it was worth

My Colocasia has started to grow - marvellous - I thought I had lost it.
Andy - how often can I feed my Musa - I am using high powered stuff - is every two weeks too often - it is in granulated form.

I'm not too familliar with what you're using RF so it's hard to say....too often and you may scorch the roots. Generally, granulated plant food is intended as a once or twice a season slow release fertilizer.
If it was liquid feed such as miricle grow, i'd use a full strength mix once or even twice a week.

I have just had a look at the back of the bag and it is a 12 - 12 - 17 - 2 so that makes it a damn strong one. I have already used it about 6 weeks ago - do you think I can use it again?
Some people do mix it with water but there is nowhere that tells you how much to use - the result being that a lot of plants do get their roots scorched.

Id personally leave it another 6 weeks....most are designed to work for 3 months. Don't think it would hurt to suppliment it with a watered down liquid feed though once a week.

Well done Cheery - the colocasia is a dream - I am so envious - I can't find anyone that sells them here...not giving up though.
Have you planted your ensete maurelii in the front garden yet - I would love to see a pic of that, if possible.

I've just aquired a small colocasia (black) which i repotted immediately and it's sprouted a new leaf. Keeping it in the conservatory at the moment to get it growing a bit.
Really fancy one of those "lime zinger" colocasias that was in a pic earlier
A lot of my cannas that i left outside all winter in pots have started to come up....should provide a nice late display hopefully.
