I have H. garderianum I put it in the border with shelter from a hedge this summer and have had 4 good flower spikes last month in fact it is still flowering and it has a really strong perfume. Mine is about 3yr old I bought it for about £2 from the wilko bargain counter. Im not sure how it will last if we have a really hard winter though. i may put fleece over it to be sure. room in my greenhouse is getting very limited.

I tried but failed at growing some ginger bought in the supermarket, not sure why though. I really must try again. Do you have any tips Andy?
Mine has done really well Rita despite planting it late. I bought a decent sized ginger "hand" from tesco with lots of nice eyes on it and planted it so it was just under the surface of the compost in a 2 litre pot.
It grew to about 2' high and is still nice although i think it might die down. I found by growing them warm and giving lots of water, they do better. Planting them in spring (march-may0 also seemed to do the trick but as i said, they do need to be warm and humid.
The red ginger I bought (H. Aurantiacum) is in the top of the mini-growhouse with one four inch shoot growing, but very spindly. Think it needs more water, I have kept it quite dry, I'm sure that is what it said on the 'destructions'!

What do I need to do to try and keep my red ginger going for next year?
I have it in a pot in the mini-growhouse at the moment - I was going to let the soil dry out and remove the root and store until next Spring - but now I'm not sure
It has grown well, is about 2' 6" tall with lots of stems, but it hasn't flowered.
Any advice on the best plan of action greatly appreciated.

I found part of a page on the web that said that gingers resent being lifted and dried, so maybe it would be better left in the pot and just kept moist in the greenhouse. mine didn't flower in it's first year either

I've got a Ginger Lily but can't recall the name of it. I've had it about 2 1/2 years now but it has never flowered The first year it hardly put on any growth but this year it has really put up lots of shoots. It's currently in a terracota pot on the patio table and I just keep it in the GH over winter, not heated just kept frost free.
I really have no idea how to look after it properly so any advice welcome

This is how mine looks today, it was planted in Feb 2007.
That is a useful site Beanie, ta muchly. Seems they may not be as tender as you might think then. When I got mine I did cut it in two hoping to get a second plant (greedy chuckles) but one rotted I'm afraid Mine is currently in a 7" ish pot and I'm going to pot it up into a bigger one before winter and keep it in the GH again. I'll be keeping mine in a pot Tig, lost too many things in the garden and I like to have plants like this to display when they are in flower, fingers crossed it will perform next year

Mine can stay in its pot over winter, and maybe I'll put it in a bigger one next year - yours has very different leaves from my hedychium aurantiacum Chuckles ..

It sort of got shoved in where ther was a space I didn't expect it to do anything! It is in a sunny place with dryish soil - when I bought it (from the bargain shop I didn't know what colour it was - I do now - orange right in the middle of my pinks and mauves I do cut it back in Winter but it has had no special treatment. It must be a tough old plant!
Thanks for the info Isabella - mine is supposed to be the red variety, so I have a spot in mind for next year (in my mish-mash of colours that means anywhere I can fit it ;D)

The leaves are broader on mine Tig, yours is very tall isn't it. I think mine is has an orange coloured flower, must see if I've still got the packaging in the shed cupboard. Must pot it on before we get any amount of cold weather too Doesn't sound like they need any really special treatment then Isabella, we do molly coddle plants too much sometimes I reckon, make work for ourselves

I want a red one now. mine is this colour and although it had four flower spikes last year so far this year it has had none. Maybe the bad summer we've had
