I must admit that I have stopped buying things at places like the equivalent of B & Q here in Germany.
Most of the time things aren't watered and then half the roots are missing. Someone did once tell me that conifers etc always show problems a very long time after something has happened. Well OK but I can't ask for a life history of each plant in such places.
I tend now to always go to my Nursery/GC - it isn't near and my OH always moans but a couple of times now I have been given exchange plants when things have gone wrong.

I shall have to take a leaf out of your book then RF although I admit, Ive recently bought a bargain apple tree from the same place, will I never learn? The proper nursery I go to is not that far, but as I have to wait until OH is free to drive me, I dont get there often.. This really good, reputable nursery has been on the site 30 years and the area has gone way downhill in that time, I wouldnt be happy going there on my own. I wish it would move somewhere a bit more savory. Handsworth used to be a nice place, way back, but now its a slum.

It is hard though, to resist buying plants when you're at the diy store. We are often at our local b&q homebase and wickes, and I can't help going to have a look at the greenery! I must say I do tend to 'rescue' plants quite regularly, I feel so sorry for them sometimes. But I don't go there to buy plants, I go to the GC or Nursery, I just buy them in addition. I did resist buying some of those box grown perennials this week. Definitely learnt my lesson there. For now anyway! ;D

May I make a couple of suggestions? Is there any chance the heading of this thread could be put in capitals so that it stands out? I really have to search for it sometimes ;D
And secondly, Dutchy has done a lovely garden diary I wonder if that's something we could have along with the lovely garden photos and comments threads, but as a new personal thread - if people wanted of course. That way we can make notes of what we've done in the garden and when. Other people might get ideas from the diaries, and at the very least it will be useful to look back over next year.

hi P... "Anyone want a Gardening Chat" is 'stickied' - so it's always at the top, and we'll certainly consider the 'diary' idea...

But it's not always at the top of my "bookmarks"!!! ;D No worries - it's not a major issue!

I really have to search for it sometimes ;D There you go P I've just put GARDENING CHAT in caps because I think the general chat thread is all in caps, I've not checked so could be wrong, bet now I've said that it's not. As OM says this is a sticky thread so will always be at the top with other stickies, but I guess that doesn't help if you rely on bookmarks. Hope it's better for you

Brilliant! Thanks BB! The General Chat is in capitals which is why I suggested having this one in caps too - they are key threads after all.

If the weather is OK this weekend (and the forecast suggests it will be) I shall do some work on the allotment and start laying stepping stones down through my lawns to catch up with the paths behind the greenhouse down to the end of the garden.

I noticed on the "things I like" thread that you like playing cricket with the grandkids Mick - no chance of that for a while I suspect. Our garden resembles a bog at the moment - I hope your's is faring better! ;D

As Plocket said can you claim? If you have buildings insurance you should be able to.
Let me know.

Oh NO! Can you claim for a new one on some insurance? Im not covered for temporary buildings P, apparently a glass GH is permanent, plastic is not. Im going to have to do something though, I really need it . Off for that cry I think.

Oh hunnie. I'm so so sorry. Could you cobble together some more coldframes? Use the plastic from the greenhouse someway?

Ok I've had a quick thought - is your greenhouse one of those ones with stuff like corrigated cardboard, only made of plastic? Can't you tape the "popped out" panels back in place even if it's just as a temporary measure?

The roof, (which is still on) is made of the corrugated plastic , the walls are made of transparent UV stabilised floppy panels... they are smashed, and are no longer the right shape to be put back in.
Im trying to look on the bright side ...it could have happened when the GH was full of seedlings. Better now, than then I suppose.
Im going to look at the possibility of buying a second hand glass GH and maybe put this one on the lottie if I can cobble a repair, attach it to the side of the shed for stability...cogs are whirring.

Sweetleaf, who says its not covered? Who are you insured with?

Tsb ... Im waiting for confirmation of this fact though, I recently upgraded the insurance, because it wasnt adequate, and I dispute the assumptions the agent I spoke to made. I have the policy out, and it doesnt make a difference what its made of as far as I can see. I need to talk to OH though, he has never let me claim on the insurance, says it puts up the premium. I said it is pointless having insurance then...
