Well it's that time of the week - have you any plans for the weekend, gardening or otherwise?
We will be heading over to my parents house after the routine of ballet and swimming lessons. They are in NZ/Aus for four weeks so we are kinda keeping an eye on the house. We'll have a few fireworks (marked as quiet - I wonder just how quiet they are though) and stay over, but other than that we haven't got any plans for Sunday.
Whatever you do, have a good one!

PML! No we won't go in the shed, at least not without OH's mobile phone!!! Actually LP had a tearful moment yesterday and mentioned that, and said she was really really worried about locking us in the "wardrobe". I reassured her that we weren't cross with her then, and certainly weren't now, and that we actually found it rather funny now, just as long as she doesn't do it again because it had been an accident.
So are you up to anything then this weekend LL?

Hi Plocket
Not sure what I'm up to yet. I know Mrs FA is taking the Cherub to get her hair cut tomorrow morning so I will be demon-sitting for a while.
We've requested a viewing of a house about ½ a mile or so from where we live now so the estate agent might ring and get us to go and see it. I'd also quite like to play golf as it's going to be a nice day.
Sunday will probably be spent in the garden although I'm not 100% sure what I'll be doing. You know what it's like - there'll always be something to do so I'm sure I won't be idle !!
Oh yes, just remembered that there's a French market in town on Sunday. We might go and have a wander round that as well.
Have a good weekend
FA x

Just moved house to a place that has been empty for about a year - and looks like it's been about 3 years since anyone went in the garden!! I'll be doing lots of tidying up the brambles/weeds/overgrown bushes.

Wonder what exciting things you will find when your tidying up. I'm sure I speak for others on here, would be great to see some before and after photos. ;D I hope to get some more tidying up done in the gdn. Been and bought some emulsion today to slap about in the front porch if the mood takes me

I spent a while yesterday clearing yet more giant shrubs and dragging them on to the now moutainous bonfire so I'm a bit knackered at the moment. This morning I plan to do some gentle pottering if smallest daughter allows. I'm tying jamjars to the fence through the middle of the garden and putting tea lights in them so we can all walk up to the orchard where the fireworks are going to be let off. I shall have to drag a garden seat up there so my elderly parents can sit down. Then it's round the kitchen table for the traditional bangers and jacket spuds with lashings of cheese and chutneys, a big slice of apple rye cake and a few jars of alcohol. I'm looking forward to it. Tomorrow I want to start to dismantle the flower garden and divide and pot up as many plants as possible. Then down the village for the HUGE (ish)bonfire and firework display. And rattle a charity bucket under as many people's noses as possible! I LOVE Autumn!
PS Good luck with Jeffrey, jlottie. At least I'm choosing to destroy my garden (sort of..)!

Remember remember the fifth of November Gunpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder, treason Should ever be forgot...
It's Guy Fawkes night AKA Bonfire night or Fireworks night, to commemorate when Guido tried to blow up the houses of parliament.

Well I had thought that today would be very hectic as the plan was to clear the garden of anything that could be shredded and then together with the neighbours, shred everything and generally tidy up a bit.
We have also guests coming for a dinner party tonight so I imagined myself shredding and running into the house to prepare something else and then out again.
As it hasn't stopped raining all day, I have been able to get everything ready in peace and quiet. Lovely. I can't do anymore now until nearer the time, so it is off for a bath.
I am envious of all of you that are having bonfire night parties tomorrow. Enjoy yourselves.

Great piles of tree cuttings too small to use on the fire, Leylandia hedge cuttings, Magnolia branch which came off in the gale are all ready for a bonfire,my next door neighbour is burning her rubbish tonight too, that way we are only adding to the global warming already happening tonight, everything is so dry after the sun of the last few days it should be a good flare.

So much for my gentle pottering. I inadvertantly took the loppers out into the garden and I've attacked my very overgrown rose arch. Huge branches of roses, honeysuckle, vines and blackberries have now joined the bonfire and I'm knackered. I've also split up some Red Hot Pokers from the flower garden, potted up all the Purple Sage and Jacob's Ladder cuttings and cut back the Hawthorn hedge so we can get to the bonfire without being attacked by it! I've rewarded myself for all this endeavour with a cider so I'd better get on with the baking before it goes to my head! Have a lovely evening everyone!

All quiet here. Done the washing and planted all the Tulip bulbs. I was going to do the Tulips tomorrow but the weather was so nice and I simply had to go and play in the sun. No bonfires so I do my "heavy" cutting in December or January when the sun is out, the temps just above freezing and a mug of hot cocoa waiting for me. Dutchy

Not working this weekend (just for a change) so after the usual Tesco-Run I was out in the sunshine pottering. I had a peek in the 'old' side of my compost bin and it was full of 'black-gold'..beautiful black, crumbly, sweet compost...MAGIC! there was the odd egg-shell, teabag etc but on the whole it was gorgeous. I was astonished...hadn't looked at it for about 9 months since that side of the bin became full and we started using the other side...
So I spent the afternoon spreading the lovely stuff over the flower bed as a mulch...well pleased with the result. ;D
also defrosted the freezer...but that wasn't quite as satisfying.

TT
Nowadays, if someone blew up B.Liar and his cronies I dare say there would be street parties but 5th November is a celebration of the fact that Guy Fawkes and his band of conspiritors failed. He was hung, drawn & quartered after being tortured for several days. You'd have thought that was enough humiliation for the bloke but we still remember him for being a miserable failure 400 years after his death as well !!!

Here are some before and after for you to browse on. It's some pics of our house when we moved here about 3 years ago, and what it has looked like this season. This has been our second full season here, so as beejay said, I'm feeling rather "chuffed" with my progress so far, and looking forward to next spring to see how the things I did through this season turns out. I'm looking forward in particular to the clems I added, and to my shrubs filling out some more. The lake in the picture is Lake Ontario, just down the street from me. The 2 primulas don't seem to understand that their time for blooming is long past. I tookk those 2 shots a few days ago, just tinkering/feeling out a new digital I just bought. Finally gave in. Hope this works on this board. It's Yahoo, not photobucket. I've forgotten how to do the Photobucket thingy and I didn't want to bother Spruance again. So lets see. ca.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/berfamilyreunion/album?.dir=a2b3re2&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//ca.photos.yahoo.com/ph//my_photos

Hi 4P. Yes; I finally caved in and got a digital, but most of the pics I've just posted were taken through the course of the year with my daughter's digital. She took hers with her when she left for Germany/Austria, despite all my threats of cutting her off with a shilling. I don't know which pics you remember; maybe the earliest ones. But yes, I did sneak another bed in the back garden and extended a bed in the front a bit when BH wasn't looking. ;D . and of course things filled out over the course of the season.
Thans Busy Bee. I'll see if I can copy the post into a new Before and After thread. I would love to see anyone else's before and after if they have any pics to tell the story. Might pick up some new ideas.

Hope you didn't mind me suggesting that TT, it's just that sometimes things get lost in other threads and it would be such a shame if anyone missed your pic's it's really good what you have done. If you do start a new thread you can just copy it all and then delete the original one.

It's the crack of dawn and all's quiet. Now I know how C3D feels every time she logs on..my cat woke me up wanting to go out at 4m and after a while I gave up trying to sleep. All that gardening yesterday has made me ache all over - don't think I ought to do much more of it today but I'm in the mood now - the spirit is willing but the body is not these days. Ho hum. We had a brilliant bonfire though last night. A before and after thread is a good idea BB but I need the reverse as my garden looked much better before than now! Still all that hedge cutting has made it look quite a bit better - we can walk along the path now! Hopefully my rose arch will much more flowery next year - there is a glorious yellow climber over it which up until it got too overgrown had a fantastic amount of blooms on it - that's something to look forward to next year. Burble burble! Think I'll go make a nice pot of coffee and shut up.

I always like to walk around my garden barefoot, even in the Winter (except when it's snowing, maybe ). Gets a bit cold on the old tootsies when there's a frost but generally it's ok. FA x

Gorgeous garden TT! As for this weekend - serious session with friends Friday evening, spent yesterday recovering, and this morning made a new cold frame from meat-packer crates given to me by my local butcher, since I realised the wooden vegetable-crate ones wouldn't stand up to the rain. These crates are made of rigid plastic with snap down handles. Put one inside the other, lining the resulting space with bubble wrap, put the pots inside filling all gaps with bubble wrap, and than covered with a layer of bubble-wrap, using the crates snap-down handles to hold everything in place ... so am now confident that the cuttings will survive the winter (of course, these could be famous last words ...) ... cheers ...
