Just been reading Gdn Chat and Aprilaydee has hacked her Buddleia down, it reminded me that I hacked mine down earlier in the year with the hope that it didn't grow back, it has and has put on some really strong growth. As it's survived I'll try and keep it to a sensible height now.

I'm thinking this one will probably put some growth back on even though it now has no leaves ;D I don't mind it growing back, I don't really want to get rid of it entirely. I've attempted a cutting of it too. It was also covered in black fly and not very accessible at it's present size and location having been left to it's own devices for too long. I'm going to get a saw tomorrow if it stays dry and saw some of the branches off it that were too thick for the loppers so I can fill the area up with more soil for other plants I was actually thinking about you and Dutchy RF when I was hacking it back and thought about posting a before and after pic but I got carried away and forgot to take the 'before' pic hehe

I'd still like to see a pic April - my Black Knight is doing well this year, but my Pink Delight isn't too happy for some reason and monsters they are not.
Hey Dutchy how is your coming on - at least through the mild winter they have survived to live another year?!

Oh blimey April - if I cut all that load off I wouldn't have a buddleia at all.
You said that you needed a saw - well I cut mine back this Spring with secateurs for the most part.!!

the neighbour came over the non wall he's currently building and hacked the rest of the stumps down. They can be easily covered with soil now.

Like Rosefriend if that were bits of my Buddleia there would have been angry neighbours claiming all the extra bits as having been their equally poorly buddleia. Although poorly.... My white one in pot is growing strong. The wet May month nearly drowned it but it is now racing up again. Straight branches still. It is over 75 cm high now. At this rate it will be as big as the house in 10 years time ;D

Buddliea's are hardy critters and you can take them back to stumps and they will love it. Buddliea's flower on the tips of current season's growth so should be cut back hard - to within 30cm of the ground - in late March or early April. It will then grow to the same size again, with larger flowers and brighter foliage.
I usually cut mine back in autumn after flowering and then give it a hard purne in the spring....mine are back to coming up to 6ft now after their haircut.

I've no doubt this one will probably grow back and I have no problem with that, it was just massive before and straggly. Also had blackfly on it so they got burnt HAHAHAHAHA!!!!
I've got another one elsewhere in the garden anyway

My Black Knight is good this year and my Pink Delight - mmmmmmh well all this talk of how sturdy they are, and how they need treating hard. I had to feed my Pink Delight this year as normal - these continental Buddleia's are definitely the affectionate kind - they need lots of loving care if they are to have any chance of surviving. RF

My buddleias - about 5 of them - are coming into full bloom and are ABSOLUTELY covered in butterflies - which was why I planted them. I think there are the butch building site buddleias and then the more well-behaved garden ones - different colours, but the butterflies don't seem to mind what colour they are. Saw 2 scarce swallow tails today - gorgeous!

Well, here's my wall monster in all its glory - cutting it to a stump definitely gave it a new lease of life. But it actually is quite pretty - even though it's definitely a 'butch building site Buddleia'!

Oh blimey CC - it looks lovely - my Black Knight isn't bad but my Pink Delight - well I have already fed it twice - can't be bothered anymore.
I think Dutchy is right - lots of tlc for the Continental types - rough and ready with the UK types. Perhaps because I am English I have been too brutal and need to be gentle.

My black knight is now in flower which isn't bad seeing as it was new this year and the one I hacked back to stumps now has plenty of new growth on it. Wonder what colour that one is...

Oooooooooooo well what a bu**er, and I thought you were a nice person.!!!!!! Dutchy when you see this don't cry - I am on your side - I have had to feed mine twice already and they don't look as good as that lot!! Bet OM never cuts them, feeds them or gives them any tlc either - not the way we do............. I thought he was so nice as well and what does he do - posts pics of lovely Buddleia's growing out of stone ..........

Alright. Mine has flower buds the first are finally opening. It also has yellow leaves. Quite a lot actually. It is neither too dry nor too wet, it has had food twice and is still struggling and no I did not over feed it. When I can bring myself to do it I might perhaps at an odd moment take a pic of it and place it on here. But it will have to look better first..... I think I am going to cut all the yellow leaves off.... Should we give OM this? He is such a gentleman... normally. Maybe he just forgot about our fragile state concerning Buddleia.

Here's an idea you might like to try with your sickly Budds. I had a Black Prince (?) that wasn't doing well. When it looked to be at death's door I scrapped it after taking the only good stem off as a cutting. It is now 2 years old and flowering for the first time It's not had a lot of TLC, been lost in the jungle and forgotten, not been fed, though probably caught the odd splash of foliar feed in passing. ( I'm not sure they appreciate feeding, OM's pics are evidence of that!!) So here it is.....

OOOh bum now you are starting NO - well congratulations on your gorgeous Black Prince. Mmmh feeding and Buddleia's - well.....Dutchy and I have come to the conclusion that UK Buddleia's can be treated like dirt, stamped on, given no love whatever and they grow into monsters. Now then here on the other side of the water things are a little different and Dutchy and I have lost so many Buddleia's that we have decided that our sort need a lot of TLC, compost and being spoken to at least once a day.!!!! As you see there are some people on this board like Canarycreeper and Aprilaydee - she was particularly cruel and hacked the poor thing down to ground level, and then we have OM - yes our OM....mmmh well what can I say.......... CC at least had a little soil in hers, and April - well she must have been so brutal to it that it became a real monster, but OM - I don't know how to say this..........it hurts, really hurts....... HE has Buddleia's growing out of stone and he never does anything......nothing at all. No kind words at the start of the season, no food, no love and look................... RF

Aaah, RF, but the ones OM showed you that have upset you, are Building-Site Buddleias. They grow at the sides of the railways, in fact they self-seed everywhere, I had 2 in the top of my chimney once and had to pay for a man to go up there and pull them out before they damaged the brickwork!!! OM is teasing you with weeds! He thoroughly deserves the smacked bottom you have promised him!( probably why he did it!!!) ;D ;D ;D
