Erm Rosefriend .... Did I tell you about the plants in MssK's garden/allotment? Guess what is there.... ..... It is about 9 feet tall has lovely tall dark purple flowers ( all spend now ) and seems very healthy. .... And now some one has told me that I should really give it a haircut before winter..... NOOOOOOOO I hardly dare look at it and I am worried I dug through the first of its roots as I was continuing my "digging the garden over" project. I now very tentatively scrape the soil free of weeds without going in there. Could you please keep your fingers crossed for this magnifi... no I did not look at it.... specimen of dare I say.... Buddleia Ooooo Dutchy - you mean that we can monsters on this side of the water as well.............mmmmh you are a fair few km's away from me though, and you are a little more sheltered that we are....sigh.....keep your eyes down when you start hacking at it Dutchy .....don't LOOK at it, will you.....Oh and just in case Chuckles is right , don't TALK either!!! <everybodyseemstohavemoreluckthanmewiththeirbuddleia's> RF

;D The only babies in MssK's garden are plum. The old one tree self seeded at first and then the offspring which reversed to a rather wild variety got all over. Also the roots are not very deep and there are runners everywhere. I have, so far, not found any buddleia seedlings.

I am pleased about that Dutchy - I have a lovely chat to myself when I am in the garden. Sort out all the worlds problems and give the plants that aren't doing too well a stiff talking too. I do get the odd funny look now and again but I have learnt to ignore them - one women said knowingly to the person she was with, - "She's English you know"!!!!!!

RF, do you talk to yourself in English then ? Yes and no jlo, if I go straight outside from GWD my brain is still in the English modus, as soon as I am spoken to in German, which is all the time, I switch and tend to stay there. On this particular occasion I was warbling quite happily to myself in German about a plant and a neighbour walked past with a friend of hers and as she obviously thought that I had totally lost it was very quick to assure her friend that I was English. The mental image that it conjured up of everyone in the UK suddenly having conversations with their plants, brought a smile to my face. RF

RF, I sitting here imagining those women walking past while you're having a good natter to yourself in English ... we're preparing to take extermination measures against our wall monster again, but it depends on me persuading OH to bring down (and climb) the ladder ... cheers ...

Your wall monster certainly makes me more than a little envious CC - must admit I wouldn't mind at least having the choice to start hacking......
My 2 buddleia's were fairly good this year - maybe this is the breakthrough that I have been waiting for, and I will happily be able to moan along with the rest of you about my monster Buddleia's!!!
Nice to dream isn't it....

I have chopped my buddleia right back, I think I have done it ok but from reading this thread they are hard to kill anyway so should be ok!
If I keep doing this each year will I be able to keep it under control and fairly small??

JArdack Almost certainly Jardack - and if you stick the cut bits in the ground, they'll root and you can dig them up and send them to Holland and Germany, where I believe they treat them as annuals... I have three and chop them seriously back at this time of year. They always come back and are huge by the end of summer. Will try some cuttings as OM has suggested and see what happens.

I found a seedling in MssK's garden today Kept pinching myself but there is no doubt about it. A Buddleia in the Netherlands with a seedling . Should I get it on the national news? ( did a lot of talking to myself when I found it, after having whoopied out loud , give the other allotment keepers a thing to talk about. )

I do hope that you have got a photo of it Dutchy - definitely has to be put in the National paper - perhaps it will get reported on in Germany.
Seedlings just don't happen in the Netherlands and Germany ..... is there an Oscar in the gardening world...perhaps you will be nominated for it.......
Congratulations Dutchy!! ;D

All I did was not look at it when it mattered. Can one get prizes for being absent in the right time?
I'll be chopping down number two plum today, I'll see if the seedling is still there and try to take a pic without it noticing.

Now that looks rather healthy doesn't it - it has also chosen a pretty good place - wonder what will win - the Buddleia or the post.

I think I will as the post has to stay and the Buddleia has to be moved. I will however plant it in real poor soil that right now is beeing frained of all things good by the Leylandii hedge. Going for that famous UK rough treatment. It might like that. Otherwise I might be able to find an old wall that I can plant it in ;D

Oh, that looks like an Irish Buddleia, Dutchy - ;D ... it will definitely win out against the post. The other day I had a Buddleia seedling removal session - around 25-30 of the little blighters. The ones in gravel are easy enough to pull out, but the ones between paving stones are a real pain, since their roots just break off - and I found an incipient monster, around 2 foot, in the back of a bed, just lurking ... cheers ...

de-Buddleied - what a marvellous word - it certainly wouldn't take long in my garden........
Well I reckon that Dutchy and I would let you off just this once - go one then show us a pic .....just don't make an habit of it will you!!!
Sigh.....pics of buddleia seedlings,oh dear, and even dutchy has started now - where will it all end.........

Probably my Irish Buddleia, unbeleivable how far the rogue Buddleia seeds can travel, has its little roots under the pavement. Either way it will at some time come out. Mind you it will be a shock not to be able to simply tap it so it falls over.
