if you are lucky enough to come across a can opener that leaves smooth edges like ours, it opens up a whole world of posibilities. as well as bean tins you can open up pop cans (or beer cans) and it's basicaly an unlimited suply of small pots. even cans with ringpulls you just need to run round the edge with the can opener.

I got chatting to a lady up at the lotties and she uses an old metal climbing frame of her grandchildrens to grow runners and sweetpeas up - she moves it round the plot each year.

It's amazing what people use is'nt it. Most of the wood and sticks and planks etc.... that I have on my plot were finds.

I got chatting to a lady up at the lotties and she uses an old metal climbing frame of her grandchildrens to grow runners and sweetpeas up - she moves it round the plot each year. What a fab idea that is Jasmine, has to be one of the best ideas I've heard of in a while. Although RF's lights for her Dahlias is brilliant, opened up a whole new gardening adventure really. I'm a beast for saving bits of wood LG but they normally come in useful at some point. My latest find is one of these www.amazon.co.uk/Kitchen-Craft-Bread-Keeper-Expanding/dp/B000YJDIOM/ref=sr_1_1/279-0806669-9408728?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1298364049&sr=1-1 it's been lurking in the pantry for rather a long time, I thought about using the main comparment which slide together and expands for a mini prop

I am looking for recycling ideas for some plastic bits & pieces - can anyone help? You can see pictures of them if you look at my last blog post: theclockworkdodo.blogspot.com/2011/03/plastic-not-so-fantastic.html (you don't need to read it all, looking at the pictures is enough!). Any ideas as to what I can do with the needle covers (top two photos) or the little pots (bottom photo), other than using the former as crocks and the latter to save seeds?

I've had a look and all I can think is that you could use the little plastic thingys which are the size of the pen tops as tops for the canes in your garden.

Thanks LG - I'm not sure they'll be quite wide enough, but I'll have a go!
Has anyone else any ideas? - I've already got more of them than I've got canes!!

At the boys old school one of the Mum's is a photographer and she gives the school her empty film pots for the children to put their dinner money in. A local school may take them off you for the same reason Juliet. They would need to be big enough for all our coins up to a 50p which is biggest I think..or maybe it's a £2 coin

You could always google schools near you and then e-mail them to see if they are interested in them..

It's quite funny Chuckles my OH is one of the least eco friendly people on the planet he thinks it's all a load of 'hippy rubbish', however he does come up with some great recycling ideas. Perhaps he's just mean i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/grin.gif Anyway the clear out of the study is progressing & it's another weekend, another book case and another bed. This one's in situ against the house wall, so I'm on the look out for some shade lovers. He's going to paint it forget me not blue apparently. And this is the emergency wind break we made to protect the poor Tithonias from the SW gales we've had for what seems like weeks now, it used to be a wicker laundry basket that had been destroyed by the cats. The uprights made really good plant supports too. Jillyx

I'm sure others do something similar, but as plant labels are so expensive now, I have taken to saving empty plastic milk cartons, and chopping them up into labels, and using a thin permanent pen to write on them!

Like the new raised bed and the wind break Jilly - tithonia are quite fragile in the wind aren't they - one of mine snapped in half

You should be crowned our recyling queen Jilly ;D love what you've used and what clever OH has done with it Plant labels are expensive Bagpuss and I reuse all mine. I have a piece of fine sand paper in the label box and just sand the previous name off I have previously used nail varnish remover to wipe off the writing but the sand paper is easier. Missy spotted my recycling of snail shells as cane toppers on another thread ;D I've been doing it fir about 4 years now, got quite a collection ;D I've had lots of flowers on Jack O'Lantern at least 5 have been and gone, there are more to come but it don't look happy I had to laugh at the snail on top of the stick

Good idea with the snails Chuckles, they have to come in handy for something. In my garden it's slugs I see, not snails 'tho. I agree we should call Jilly Queen of recycling, she's done such a good job with so many things. ;D
