MRH I remember someone somewhere saying they don't have any chemicals in them. I wonder could you use them in big pots too?

I recycled a plastic tub with a screw top lid today, made a hole in the top popped a ball of string inside and then pulled the end of the string up through the hole and screwed the lid on. Made the hole big enough for the top of the scissors to fit in it as well ;D

Had a couple of good days doing a bit of recycling ;D Whilst chatting to my neighbour last night over the garden fence, as you do, she told me that the previous night she had seen 2 metal and wood garden benches and a table in a skip outside our village school. She had thought of asking me to help her get them but didn't. No sooner said than done ;D Well ;D at 8.30pm in the rain ;D we went off up the village. Luckily they wer still there and we carried each one back to her house. We struggled and giggled and kept having to stop for a rest and eventually got finished at 10pm. Both of us were filthy and knackered but well pleased with our treasure. This week OH took down some fencing on a job.....Oooooh thought me that would make some nice edging for my neighbours veg beds and maybe even a compost bin. I had to go to the job and load it on the trailer but it was worth it

Anyone found anything good for recycling to use in thier garden lately.
The only thing I've done lately is resuse my white plastic plant labels, despite using a permenant marker pen on them I rub it off with fine sand paper. I saw on GW the other night they use wirewool.

Wirewool is handy for scrubbing clean the wood furniture too. Not much recycling going on at the moment but I saw some small planters made from of cuts of a scaffolding board. I might have a go at that as bits still lie around in the shed.

After the success of the umbrella obelisk, we've got another plan for the weekend. OH has got another raised bed to grow the runner beans in, but we won't need it for another few weeks. There's been some sheets of clear perspex hanging around in the stores at work for ages doing nothing, so this weekend we're going to put together the raised bed & make a temporary lid out of the perspex. Then I'll have a temporary cold frame for hardening off, as I need the protection of the mini GH, so I can get the Tomatoes & Chillies out of the spare room.

I use the plastic compost bag and bale wrappers to make plant pots. Cut them into suitable sizes (you have to experiment), roll them round a suitable sized can (I use a lighter fuel refill aerosol can), stick them with parcel tape. You can make them to the depth you require (shallow for small plants and deep for deep rooted plants). When you've used them they can have the tape removed, wiped and they're ready for making up for the next plants.
It's the GREEN option, you save on the resources used to make and transport pots, not to mention your journey to buy them.

I have a major problem with my neighbours cats using my raised bed as their personal litter tray, so after planting out some bits and sowing some seeds I made this to keep them off : - Lets hope it works cos I will need them all back when I am hardening off things later in the year!

Well done Jardack that's a great way to use the mini growhouse. Fingers crossed it keeps out the cats.

I rested canes across my brassica patch Jardack in an attempt to keep the cats from digging it up, but they have moved on to digging up the onion seedlings instead and one of my flower borders now. My neighbour puts chicken wire over his soil after he has sown to keep the cats and the sparrows off it, and leaves it there until his harvest is over but it means you can't hoe off the weeds x Tig

I put chicken wire on my raised bed, held in place by garden canes, but I take it off once things start growing.

OH has got another raised bed to grow the runner beans in, but we won't need it for another few weeks. Jillyx Raised bed for runner beans? Doesn't bear thinking about, I have to get a ladder to pick mine growing at ground level. The bean poles were 1/2" concrete reinforcing rods used for Airfield security fencing during WW2, my father and myself have had them since 1946. They'll see me out, think I'll leave them to my Grandson.

Don't worry it's only slightly raised, more to keep the compost in one place than anything else i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif I've discovered something great about working for OH's company, they do a lot of electrical work, which means an endless supply of copper wire. Most of the beds are getting copper edges, still have to use the pellets atm though. Jillyx

I bought a white metal shelving unit from Ikea the other day to use in a small walkin area in my bedroom, it doesn't fit were I wanted so have decided to recycle it in the garden ;D Can't decide yet if it would be good in the GH or the summer house for seedings or in the shed to store clutter ;D it might even look ok against a wall with some pots on. The shelves are four different depths so its a bit like an etagere and they are a rigid mesh affair. There is a narrower one if anyone is interested and it also comes in a dark grey. www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/70114753

It looks good shelving to me and at that price you can't go wrong... OH and I have done some recyling today - in the cellar... It all started with a pair of old bedroom dressing table lamps and the fact that my begonias and dahlias, corms etc need to be starting to grow... So I suggested this... Cleaning out the part of the cellar opposite the heating system...it used to look like this... and slowly became this... then the lamps came into play... and finally what I wanted them for..... I'll get the big tubs out into the GH as soon s they show signs of life - if I covered them with fleece they should be OK in March. I have still got to do the dahlia's etc but it will help me for the next 4/5 weeks at least... RF

Not sure if this belongs on here but I am off later to pick up a couple of bags of chicken poo that were advertised on freecycle.....think that I might add one to the compost bin to help break down the stuff in there and the other I might add to the beds.... not sure yet.
