I've mounded up the mulch around the roots and have a fleece bag at the ready for the crown. It's over 5' tall now and the stem is really quite thick.... ;D
I'll prolly put it's hat on tomorrow. It's well protected in the corner, altho we've had a few sparkly mornings that corner of the garden seems to have escaped....so far....

I've got millions of seedlings - they're everywhere this year!! I shall pot some up so I can plant them where I want them, cover some and leave the rest to sink or swim!!! I also have about 10 year old ones which I must thin out to discard the ones in the wrong places ( must do it while OH isn't about as he tries to save them all!!!)

How have people's echiums survived? We even had severe frosts down here and I have lost most of the self seeded seedlings However, the large ones seem relatively ok - guess I'll have to wait until I come back from holiday before I'll know for certain

Sorry OM I couldn't help myself - The wall is at least 12' high and the echium was looking so happy this morning Last time I saw something as joyous as that it was Willie jumping over the wall... my 'Chichester Two' have died in the PT despite fleece and while the originals in their corner are alive, they're sad, twisted things. I must start again, in a reliably sunny spot. OM.

OM, they don't transplant very well from seedlings yet they seem to seed themselves in some very harsh places. I think that the best bet will be from seeds and sow them where you want them to grow, they obviously like poor, very well drained soil Btw I'm amazed the one on the wall survived as the temperature dropped to -6 one night

How are your echiums doing? I'm dying to take the fleece off mine..... Desperately gnarled and twisted, CPB - a dreadful monument to neglect, and the 'Chichester Two' never made it through the winter despite being in the PT. However... word has reached me that seeds from the Slapton Echies are on their way, so I may be in the hunt again. OM.

I took the fleece off mine, and apart from a few crispy leaves the crown seems quite healthy...I am poised to leap into the garden with a fleece at the first sign of frost....altho it's in a v sheltered position...This year it'll be 4 years old....it MUST flower...I don't think my nerves could stand another year of this....

OM, I will send you some seeds in a couple of months - there are a few in the grounds around here that are just starting to flower, they are toughies as they all self seeded. btw I'm not getting a ladder out for the one on the wall although it will flower shortly This one is growing through the apple tree and must be 15' I'm pretty sure the seeds should be sown fresh and was thinking that a bio degradable pot might be a good idea as they hate being disturbed
