Ever thought of having your begonias in hanging baskets so you leave the cills free for trays? Only got a few pendula ones and nowhere to hang them really

Well, a couple more cornflowers have germinated, but I don't think any of the Agastache are going to make it ... and it doesn't look as though there'll be any more geraniums ... cheers ...

Sowed my nicotiana sylvestris today. LNG...that night scented stock will be in flower by easter ...don't usually sow mine until mid april as it grows so fast. Of course you could sow a second batch for later flowering plants

Isn't it fine seed Andy, one deep breath and it would have been all over the carpet! Would it be better to mix it with some sand? I have plenty left if this first lot don't show. Tig

Is it only my nicotiana sylvestris that comes up patchy or does everyones? I have some leave 3 mm across and some like dust. How you supposed to prick that out??
|
|
|
Post by Dutchy on Mar 13, 2008 8:39:59 GMT
The hard way ;D Just leave them in until some are bigger then the rest around them. Nicotiana grows into a huge plant so out of all the seedlings app 9 will be enough for your garden. I usually way until there are that amount of larger ones and then prick those out ( throwing away the smaller ones attached to them, it's a bit of a fiddle with the roots but not too hard ). I leave the rest in the tray as they will grow on and you can later prick out more big ones either to replace or to give away. Leaving the tray you will find new ones continue to come up well into May. Just keep the soil slightly moist. The little rabits/Nicotiana can be pricked out and out and out. And yes they always came up patchy for me but I ended up with surplus plants every year so far.
My Zinnia and a Malva sylvestris are showing growth. Quick ones these. No Nicotiana yet but then I only sowed Sunday.

Which Malva Sylvestris did you sow Dutchy? I did 'Magic Hollyhock last year, they were incredibly easy and now I have three plants in the garden showing lots of new growth - definitely the purplest purple I've ever seen. Went on a bit of a seed-buying spreee yesterday, but this is definitely it: Aquilegia 'Sweet Rainbows' (T&M Kew collection), hope they do better than the Chocolate Soldiers; Euphorbia Amjilassa (also T&M Kew - destined for shady horrid bit in the back, and for the front raised bed) and Campsis Radicans (eventual replacement for Eccremarcarpus, since the latter is supposedly 'short-lived') ... will be sowing these today or tomorrow ;D ... cheers ...

Magic holyhock is what I sowed got the seeds from here. Can't remember whom from If only my brain would work Might have been Jlottie. I had not realized they are more than annual. How long will they last? Like real Hollyhock? That would be lovely and very purple ......Or did you by any chance send them to me? Better try and find some reliable marbles this year.

Sounds like a great arrangement, CPB A few more hardy geraniums and perennial cornflowers have decided to emerge ;D ;D Sowed Euphorbia and Aquilegia yesterday in unheated mini-prop; will stay in hall for two weeks and then go outside to give the Euphorbia its required 'cold spell' (I don't think this'll bother the Aquilegia any) ... sowing Campsis Radicans today ... cheers ...

Dutchy, I'm sorry, you're not the only one with marbles going missing ... no, I certainly didn't send you the Magic Hollyhocks ... but, yes, they are perennial, although I've no idea how long-lived they are. Last year I sowed them in April, they started flowering in July and continued until end/October. The flowers look like purple velvet ;D ;D ;D ... cheers ...

Thanks CC. Purple velvet eh? Sigh. With all this sowing seeds I feel things are well on their way but when you actually look at things they are still so minute. Got a bit of a depression going here. Worked all morning on the bldy Groei en Bloei Vechtstreek website. Got all the messages, pictures and the agenda on and the bldy auditors still have not fixed the links problem. All I did is there but invisible to normal mortals Sorry, seed thread, not winge, but I got carried away. There now are three magic seedlings taking a chance at life ;D and the sun is coming out so I am off to do some Soul refitting

Finally got round to planting some flower seeds in trays. I have about 30 packets as I can't resist buying them whenever I go shopping at supermarkets, Wilcos or GCs. I even buy on ebay. Today I planted: Lobelia - sapphire pendula Poppy Himalayan Blue Morning Glory grandpa otts I am not very good at looking after seeds in trays - I have put them by the french windows in the back room.
