I don't agree that you should have to accept it either, nor should you. From bitter experience I would say nip it in the bud now. I wouldn't bother speaking to the woman (if she's as gormless as you say, it wouldn't do any good) she's a tenant, I would be getting on to the owner, in fact I'd be making his life hell, on to him about every single little incident. Also as he broke his agreement about who he would let to, I would be saying that you hold him responsible for any damage to your property done by his tenants. to you & try not to get too stressed, if you make them more trouble than they're worth to him, you could have got rid of them by the summer.

I have whinged about this before - well, what could happen, I suppose. Sorry this is a bit long but I am really fed up!! For those that follow my garden thread, and also this thread, will remember that our neighbour died, new owner cleared not only the house but also the so called garden. We now have a problem that we both knew would happen but I would like to hear what you all think!! New owner (as against new neighbour as he has rented it out) said to us, and the neighbour on the other side, that he would get someone in that met with our agreement - i.e our ages, no children apart from grandchildren etc etc. Fine we thought - then he said that he has let it to a woman that is a kindergarten teacher and had a 9 year old daughter that played football!!! Bang, wallop - gawd help us!! He said that he has stated that they must have respect for us with their games and footballs etc - I just cringed to be honest. I saw them playing football last year - the ball went over the neighbours fence (1m high here) and they jumped over and got the ball and carried on...we waited for the same thing to happen here... I will skip a load except to say that for the first time in over 30 years we suddenly got an egg thrown at the kitchen window. Silly perhaps but this upset us both a lot and I am sorry but I still think it is the 9 or now 10 year old kid from next door. This afternoon happened what had to happen - wonderful spring weather and suddenly 3 kids, football fanatics starting playing football next door. At this point let me say that we do not have any fencing at the moment as the owner has taken it all off (see my garden thread) and we are still waiting for him to come and put his own fencing up. The left side of a house/garden is the responsibility of the left hand neighbour - we look after the right side. OH opened the back door and asked them to be careful as there was no fencing and we don't want any footballs in the garden or them coming in to get them. So the ball went into the other neighbours garden and over the fencing they jumped, got it back and carried on - not much to trash there actually as it is mostly just motley bushes... Then the ball landed in our garden - guess what, doorbell went - they hadn't jumped into the garden and got their ball, they got Mum and came and rang the bell - ran to the fencing so that they weren't on our property even... smiled at that and that is at least a plus point for them...however nothing else is... As I said Mum is a kindergarten teacher and kids can do all and everything they want - children are children. OH knows that my garden is my hobby and passion and although I am willing to always compromise with events I never compromise with my garden. There are enough shitty things that happen that we all know - S & S. creepy crawlies of every order, horrible fungi's, weather and and and. OH went out and actually shut the door behind him as he knew I was heating up quite nicely...he can stay calmer than I can when it involves the garden. She wanted the kids ball back and it started - OH said that he wasn't accepting footballs in the garden, it was my hobby and now his as well and that a ball does a lot of damage when it thuds into the garden. It wasn't just a garden for me, it was more, and how would the kids feel if we came and ruined their favourite hobby - would they like that - OH said that they just looked gormless actually. Mum argumented that they were just kids - OH said that he was also once a child but that he was told were his borders were and that flattening the neighbours garden was not allowed. I do realise that they are kids but must I really accept that they flatten my garden - must I accept that even when the fencing is back (one metre high) that a ball flies over and a beloved plant or glass ornament is shattered?? The new owner broke his promise when he got the new neighbour in - I do understand that he needs someone that will pay etc but at our end of the road we are all older and it is very quiet - well was anyway. People are saying that we must accept that the kids will play and also accept that our garden may get flattened - children are children. I don't accept that at all - why must I have things destroyed in the garden - why ?? I don't accept the argument that kids are kids and we have to accept that!! I certainly wasn't like that as a child. RF Rosefriend I do feel for you. I agree with Jilly that no way should you just accept footballs flying over the fence into your precious garden. I'd stick to my guns and say that as the ball falls into your property it is up to you to decide if they get it back or not. I'd still give them a piece of my mind if / when it happens and would'nt care if they thought I was a grumpy neighbour. You have worked hard for years to get your garden the way it is and say to the neighbour yes kids do have to be kids but they also need bounderies and how to respect other peoples property. I'd get onto the owner and have a stern word with him too and encourage him to get that fence up pdq. In the meantime try not to let it stress you out Rosefriend. Worrying will not help you or OH, better to form your words and responses to the situation. Do keep us informed as to how it goes.

Thanks Jilly and Ladygardener, - I have to say that I am rather fed up - when I think of the mess they could create!! I do feel that we are in for a rough ride as the excuse is "they are children" and should be aloud to develop as they wish. Well, ok, but in Somalia for example children carry machine guns and kill people - does the fact that they are children stop them from being murderers... The parents of these kids are all awol from their husbands, all esoteric inclined, all feel sorry for themselves, all lazy buggas and generally a pain in the nether regions. If they meet up the conversation is about men, children and illness.... When we got the snow two of the kids were off school and were building a snowman outside, laughing and generally having a good time, and the neighbour on the other side saw them and asked why they weren't in school. The daughter of next door said that she was ill with tummy problems and the other very proudly announced hat she was ill with depression!!!!! I saw the the "goal posts" which is made up of two plant pots has been moved to the other side at least. I have been on the web today and found out the legal aspects which basically is all on the side of the children. a) If a ball lands in our garden then we cannot keep the ball but we don't have to give it back until asked... b) The kids are not allowed to come into the garden and get the ball themselves. c) If damage is done then the parents have to pay. We cannot stop them playing ball and we can't raise the height of the fencing as it is not our fence.. Let's say that a lily is flowering , loads of blooms and a football comes over and smashes it...what do I do!! If I asked for money, what is a smashed lily worth....how much could I ask for?? RF

As much as you could buy a large in flower lilly for Rosefriend (which would be significantly more than you would pay for a bulb), I bet your friend with the nursery could give you a price list I know the fence isn't yours but would it be possible to raise the height with trellis along your side, it wouldn't have to be very strong or expensive just enough to deflect incoming projectiles (& of course any damage to said trellis would have to be paid for by the parents).

At least they've moved the goal posts Rosefriend so perhaps the neighbour is listening. I agree with Jilly about replacing a plant/flower as it is and not in it's bulb state. I still think you should have a word with your neighbour and find out if he has already bought the fencing and if not could he buy a higher one. Failing that, then yes I would speak to him about being able to attach something like a trellis to give the fence more height.

Thanks both - when I take Olaf his tom plants I will ask him about prizes and what I could ask for without seeming ridiculous. The new owner was here, only shortly as apparently the fencing isn't coming until Tuesday now (weird as everywhere you can get fencing in a few days) and he dug a trench to put slabs on the border, did nothing else and basically left. We won't get it until the coming weekend I suppose. However, it is very obvious that he isn't interested in the fact that the kid could flatten the garden, children do these things, and we must sort it out ourselves. We have two trellises to add to his fencing - if he stops us then we will know what we have to do in the future - not going to be easy though.. I really am more than a little upset but we can only wait until the fencing goes up to see just what he intends - he has ordered a small fence (1 metre) which is the same as we all have...sigh !! RF

Oh dear Rosefriend I do feel for you but you are right, you'll have to see what happens while being in some way prepared mentally. I thought the fence was going to be much higher than 1 mtr. Adding your 2 trellises will help too 'tho.

Oh I wasn't a happy bunny this morning & turned into a complete fishwife . One of the pleasures of living on a main road, is if ever you're working in the front garden, people want to talk to you. I was having a bit of a weed earlier & heard the fatal words "hello madam sorry to disturb you" it was a guy holding a load of business cards & obviously calling door to door, but he thought he'd catch me in passing. Now I'm never rude to people first off, so I stopped & said hello & he wanted to give me one of his cards, so I said OK. He then proceeded to walk towards me, right across the borders (a huge pair of size 9's right in the middle of a clump of Crocus). I proceeded to ask him what he thought he was doing (OK in not quite those words ) To be honest I was in a good mood & he could have got away with it if he'd just said sorry & stepped backwards, but instead he started kicking at the edge of the beds & saying he didn't know why I was being so rude & if I didn't want people to walk on the garden I should make it clear . It's probably wasn't a very good idea to pursue him menacingly wielding a hand fork (& telling him in no uncertain terms where I was going to stick it), shrieking like a banshee & chasing him down the road, but it probably gave the neighbours a laugh & definitely made me feel better. I never did find out what he was selling

I would have loved to have seen it too, the trouble is, I'm basically a very nice person, but having worked & socialised mostly with men all my life, I do have what could be described as a delicate turn of phrase when roused. OH found it hilarious, he was indoors behind double glazing & didn't hear anything, but he said it was a good thing that he didn't have to come out & defend his delicate flower of a wife

Gosh, that doesn't look well maggy. Good luck with getting a refund. It may be worth looking on their website to see if they have the Facebook symbol as it seems if you post on Facebook you get a much quicker response from some companies than you otherwise would.

It looks to me as though that plant may have a really bad case of black spot - the whole stems seem infected. If you could bear to, I would cut it back to the last bud and also perhaps spray it with something for black spot. Roses have "sleeping eyes" - those are the ones that are just above, and on, the bud grafting and even if everything dies back, those should start to grow after 6 to 8 weeks. Is the name of the rose "Queen White" as I have never heard of it - not that it means anything as there are millions of different rose varieties... The stems suggest a really large rose - big rose bush type perhaps?? What did you buy it as?? RF
