At last another instalment although the bad weather we had did not really invite any outdoor garden activity but for a few lucky who live in warmer areas. No happy Paul quote but he did rant about this new insects repellent that seems to be allowed in the UK so I put it on here and all that agree with Paul can sign petitions to safe the bees as he puts it. A rant about Neonicotinoid insecticides and the fact that the Environment Minister, MP Owen Paterson, in the UK has decided to ignore the European Parliament and the evidence base and will allow them to be used in the UK. This is the same minister who late last year added his support to GM crops being used more widely in the UK. I only mention this because the company at the centre of both of these travesties of justice is Bayer Cropsciences, and they will benefit from both of these decisions, hugly. It would seem I am mistaken in thinking that MPs are voted into parliament to act as a representative for the general public and when the general public have concerns about a subject it would be wise for the MPs to take note. So when 340,000 people signed this petition www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/save-the-bees-ban-neonicotinoids-pesticides and 2.5 million have signed this petition www.avaaz.org/en/hours_to_save_the_bees/?slideshow maybe it would be a good idea to take note of the public. So ignoring my paranoia regarding what would seem to me as being an MP in the pocket of the Chemical companies I would urge everyone to sign one or the other petitions if you have not already done so. First of all I give you Paul's musings of this week. I did feel my heart drop when I read the first line. Is it really still snowing in parts of the UK? OMG.....
"It’s snowing as I write this, and I can see the little flakes landing on the vegetable bed where I would be expecting to see green shoot emerging. It’s quite unnerving to say the least. Whilst I was shopping today the season section has been optimistically changed for a display of Barbecue coal and lawn treatments, and maybe they should have been filling the shelves with snow chains and de-icer. With the ground temperature well down on the seasonal norm the grass and other plants will not have even started to grow yet. Grass will grow when the soil reaches 5 degrees celsius so if we have a quick burst of springlike weather in the next week or two we can expect to see a difference by the beginning of May. This may sound bad from a gardener's point of view but plants a very resilient and they will do their best to catch up, so don’t be too despondent. In fact I was talking to a landscape gardener I know and he was saying it was giving them the opportunity to get ahead of most of the jobs they are doing as usually this time of year you are panicking to get everything into the ground.
So with all this spare time I’m going to build some salad planters out of plastic guttering. These are very simple to put together and are made up from a 2m length of plastic gutter with two ends fixed in place. Then fill with a potting compost and firm down. Now sow with lettuce, rocket or radishes and wait for them to grow. The first time I built some of these I placed them on window sills in the conservatory, but with four cars in the house they would now become cat litter trays in no time at all. An alternative location to fix them is on a south facing fence panel. You will need to buy the wall to gutter fittings but then you can have a single fence panel with four or five gutters fitted in a ‘vertical garden’ manner. I would suggest each one should be sloping by about 3 cm or an inch, so the top one slopes down to the right and the next one down slopes down to the left and repeat the pattern. If you have a hole drilled in the gutter at its lowest point it should drain into the gutter below at the highest point and then you will have the start of a self watering salad garden. I would fit a watering container at the top with a thin bore plastic pipe (like the ones used in wine making) and then fill the container first thing in the morning and it should dribble down for an hour or so watering the plants. You could be a bit more inventive and develop a way to regulate the water so it could be used over several days, and if you do please send me pictures and plans and I’ll put them on the website.
Happy Gardening Paul "

wow it works, wel on my machine it looks as if it did. I copied from Paul's newsletter directly onto reply and the pics are there and even the links I think. Happy gardening all.
p.s. found that the moonplanting calendar for NL is quite different from this UK one. Any one a clue as to why? Is the time schedule the influence? We are a one hour zone different. Seems logical somehow.

He did a bit of moaning but I left it out. As things have been quiet I thought it was not interesting people but next time I will include his writings again if only for you Jasmine I noticed that the moon planting calendar for the Netherlands is different from the UK one that Paul has. Maybe this is why things do not work so well for me. I thought we shared latitude but maybe it is longitude that is defining. Ah well we live and learn. It somehow seems more logical as we are in different time zones so we should have a difference in moon times too.

Nah Jasmine he was moaning about pests and guess what... he has found another "pest" The sun has warmed the soil now and as the temperature has risen past 15 degrees all hell has broken loose. Not only have the seeds germinated for all the vegetables but the weeds have done the same, this is why we sow seeds in nice straight rows so we can see where the weeds are. Well that’s the theory anyway. My nice rows of Spring Onions, Carrots and Beetroot have been attacked by cats using the seedbed as a toilet and now I have several patches where the rows seem to be mixed up. I don’t really want to spend too much time poking around to see if I can rescue any of the seedlings as I’m not sure what I’m going to find. Actually I know exactly what I will find, I just don’t want to find it. So I’m open to any suggestions people have to keep cats off the seedbeds, bearing in mind they cannot be posted off to a distant location as they are our cats and I would get into trouble, and no harm can come to them, what do you use to keep the pesky felines away? This weekend will be spent creating some flowering beds and and weeding the veg plot. Flowering plants are not my area of expertise, but thankfully the RHS Horticulture course I did many years ago seems to have stuck in my head and I can muddle my way through. One of my favorite design ideas is to plant as many edible plants in the flowering beds as I can, for example Fennel and Artichokes are great structural plants in larger beds. My aim one day will be to have a completely edible flowering bed that looks like a Gertrude Jekyll style wide bed, and produces harvestable crops throughout the year. I have almost all of the plans in place and I know most of the plants I will use I just need a large garden to try it on.

Her garden is quite small (by gardening presenter's standards) and she plants flowers and veggies together. My new bed is going to be grasses, artichokes and dahlias to pick up the purple tones of the artichokes.

Jasmine Those were not my words but Pauls. I should have used brackets to make that clear. As for Alys Fowler. I have found that I can watch the series she had on the beeb and some of her own video's on Youtube. I now watch those on my Ipad with headphones on when OH is watching something on Television that I don't want to see. Great fun and yes Alys is as mad as a very likeable hatter. I love her new allotment story on Youtube. At least she also shows the failures which is sooooooo refreshing. Discovering Youtube as a source of old programs is great. Even Monty Don 80 gardens around the world is there. Love it.

Me too but we should not use this list Rosefriend as it is aimed at the UK and we have a different moon calendar. Here is some more Paul writing and the list will follow. "So this week I've been on holiday in Wales and the vegetables at home have had to fend for themselves. I was hoping to have the new waterbutt installed next to the greenhouse but I didn't have time in the end. Which means I may or may not have some tomatoes when I return. I also took a bit of a gambol with the Courgette plants as I had left them uncovered and we were having light frosts in the morning up to the day I left. All in all I may be returning home to a complete disaster. What makes it even worse is the garden at the holiday cottage I have been stopping in looks fantastic. After speaking to the gardener today, he spends 3 hours mowing the lawns and then half a day looking after the beds and hedges. In all, the grounds extend to an acre, with informal beds made up of low maintenance bushes, shrubs and trees, and large lawn areas linking the different 'rooms' together. The first thing I noticed upon arrival was the Hostas didn't have a single nibble on any of their leaves. In my garden Hostas would be lucky to get through the night without being devoured by the slugs and snails. I did look carefully and there was no sign of any slug pellets. I asked the gardener what his secret was and he reckons it was the thrushes which kept them under control. Either he has a secret or the thrushes do keep the slugs down. After spending a week here watching the wildlife on the bird tables I can't say I've seen a single thrush. There have been many finches, robins, blue tits and woodpeckers, but no thrushes. Which means they are either busy eating slugs and snails or there is another reason for the lack of vegetarian predators. The other variable which may be affecting the number of slugs is the altitude, this garden is at about 800ft above sea level and located in a valley between several mountains so the frost pockets could be quite severe during the winter, and possibly enough to do for the slugs. If anyone has a garden with very few slugs in could they let me know what their secret is? " I hate to say that the few slugs option is not in my garden

Pauls words for this week:
Weeding can be a very therapeutic way to spend an hour or so, but to appreciate how good it can be you need to motivate yourself to start. For a lot of people coming in from work and sitting in front of the TV is a great way to clear your mind, but rather than sit down and do nothing get up and get out weeding your plot. It’s not stressful in fact it relaxes you better than the TV, and you have a sense of achievement when you have finished. Tomorrow morning when you travel to work look back on what you did and be much happier and you can exude a level of smugness that will have people wondering what medication you are on.
So this week as well as weeding I’ll be watering the vegetables and watching out for pests, diseases and predators. Most of my watering takes place early in the morning, or last thing at night, but as a general rule I don’t water the greenhouse in the evening as this can lead up to a damp environment with little light and this makes a perfect breeding ground for Botrytis (grey fuzzy mould) and blight.
Also this week I’ll be sowing some more Beetroot and Carrots ready for picking in September and October. For several years now I’ve been growing what’s known as the ‘Three Sisters’ or Sweetcorn, Squash and Beans, all sown in the same patch and then they grow together. The squash around the base with spiky leaves protecting the other two. The Sweetcorn provides support for the Beans which in turn store Nitrogen in the soil and help the others grow. Well this year I have decided to leave out the Sweetcorn as it’s a lot of effort and it has only occasionally produced a few corns and replaced it with a sunflower, This then provides the support and should encourage pollinators to the flowers and later on provide a food source for birds (or me). I’ll let you know how it goes.
Let me know if you can think of any more combinations or alternatives to the Three Sisters?
Happy Gardening

First I give you Paul's words of the week including some lovely elderflower recipe.
Here in Dorset I have noticed an abundance of all types of flowers, I know the Bluebells have been late this year and they have caught up nicely as a result of the late winter and having to catch up with the seasonal growth as a result there are loads more flowering at the same time which makes for huge swathes of Bluebell woods and Coppices. As well as the Bluebells other early flowering plants like Buttercups, Herb Robert and Cow Parsley are also creating huge displays and the hedgerows are looking amazing with the blues, whites, yellows and pinks all merging into one stippled display.
In the vegetable garden the late winter has also caused the plants to grow in a more frantic manner and the growing periods for different plants have bunched together and overlap, so a normal June is a busy month for gardeners but this year there is a sense of urgency which is condensing the gardeners tasks into a smaller timescale.
Whilst you would think this would make it almost impossible to keep up with our jobs, some of the tasks such as weeding and watering the different crops can be done consecutively so things are not getting out of hand. Which is good as there is a harvest almost ready to pick and this year it is huge.
Elderflowers are to me one of the key reminders of Summer, sipping Elderflower cordial in the middle of winter transports me instantly back to long lazy summer days. But shop bought Elderflower isn’t the same, it’s too clinical in it’s presentation and always consistently the same. With a homemade there are so many variables which could be different and they each impart a slightly different flavour. It’s also the process of making the cordial and the smells you get from the experience that become the triggers for the memories.
This year there is going to be a group of us making all sorts of Elderflower concoctions in the garden overlooking a quiet Dorset valley with a small trout stream at the bottom. There will be young children sent off to collect buckets of elderflowers, with an older child present to make sure they’re not picking Cow Parsley. There maybe a few sips of local cider present for the adults to quench the thirst as they work under the clear skies and hot sun (hopefully). There will be someone will be strumming a guitar as the day becomes an early summer evening, and there will be smells in abundance tracing neural pathways through our brains which will lie dormant until we pour ourselves a glass of cordial in the mid-winter and it all comes flooding back.
Anyway, you’ve got the idea, now you must be dying to know what we are going to make? Firstly Elderflower cordial is a must, closely followed by Elderflower Champagne, and then some Elderflower Wine. Lastly maybe some Elderflower fritters to keep the children happy. To make the drinks you need to follow a very similar process for each and by making a few changes it will transform each into a different product.
Method: Using a fork pull the flowers from the flower heads into a large bowl or container. I put them directly into a white fermentation bucket. Pour on hot water (recently boiled) if you are making wine or cordial, and it must be below 74C if you are making ‘Champagne’ using natural yeast method as high temperatures will kill the yeast. Some years harvest has very little natural yeast and you will have to add your own anyway. If you are going to add Champagne yeast don’t worry about the temperature of the water. Add the required amount of sugar, the lemon zest and juice and vinegar if needed by the recipe.
Wine: 4 litres hot water15 Elderflower heads1 Kg of sugar2 tablespoons of white wine vinegarJuice and zest of three lemons or replace juice with citric acidWhite Wine yeast
Leave the mixture to cool with a lid on the container until it reaches room temperature and then add the wine yeast and leave until the fermentation has finished. Strain off into demijohns to mature and bottle. Should be ready for drinking in about a year.
Champagne: 4 litres hot water15 Elderflower heads700g of sugarJuice and zest of three lemons or replace juice with citric acid2 tablespoons of white wine vinegarA small amount of Champagne yeast
Leave the container covered for a few days and a fermentation should have started, if not add a small amount (a pinch) of Champagne yeast to get the fermentation started. Leave for four days and then strain it into very strong bottles. I use the plastic lemonade bottles as the amount of CO2 generated by the fermentation can cause the bottles to explode. The plastic bottles tend to distort and fall over and when they do you can open the lids to release the pressure a bit. Glass bottles just go bang, usually in the middle of the night. Leave for a week and then start drinking.
Cordial:
4 litres hot water15 Elderflower heads700g of sugarJuice and zest of three lemons or replace juice with citric acid
Once the cordial mixture has cooled simply strain the juice and bottle it and store.
The key to making all of these is to make sure everything you use in the process must be spotlessly clean. You can buy cleaning chemicals from a home brew shop and they are better than using bleach as it can leave a taste behind.
Happy Gardening
And from me the extra remark that all green stems of Elder are slpoisonous so do take care to remove the stems real good.

20 June 2013
So tomorrow is the longest day and it’s all downhill from then on. The nights will be drawing in and before you know it it will soon be Christmas. But before you get too depressed we’ll have to do some harvesting first and that has got to be one of the best times of year. So good luck to everyone camping out at Stonehenge tonight, I think the weather forecast is for cloud but you might just get a glimpse of the sun.
If you miss the sun, then the full moon on the 22nd-23rd is going to be quite special as it is one of those supermoons you may have heard people talking about. A supermoon is when the moon gets to the closest point in orbit to the Earth during that year, and as a result it will appear much larger than normal. If theres no cloud that is!
Another thing traditionally the full moon in June is known as the Strawberry Moon.
Happy Gardening Paul

I think it's going to be far too cloudy to see the moon from the SE tonight - what a shame.

It does sound like something the Beatles might have come up with, does it not? I was lucky as around midnight the clouds broke and I got a full view. Mind you if I hadn't known I might have thought...hey nice moon tonight and not looked longer than 5 minutes. I suppose they call it a strawberry moon because a) it is big and stands out and b) when it rises over the horizon it is red like a strawberry or a blood orange's flesh but hey what is in a name.

For those wondering where the moon info went. It went on Hols. Back from holiday and I see the automatic emails didn’t get sent out so apologies to everyone. The good news is my automatic watering system has been a success and all the plants have flourished. The courgettes are ready for picking today and with any luck we should be picking them for the next month or so. The beans have suffered somewhat from attacks by Slugs and snails but that was to be expected as I have not managed to eradicate them from the garden yet. The garlic despite having Leek Rust have swollen nicely and they are currently drying in the greenhouse. Lastly the first of the Globe Artichokes is going to be cut today and a small ceremonial meal will be had with the first one.
