Cheers Dutchy Pinch punch, it's the first of the month and November kicks off with Sleet and storms here in the UK. Last night’s storm gave us heavy rain and high winds and still them pesky kids came out and 'Trick or Treated'. What’s up with kids these days, why aren’t they sitting behind a games console rather than eating all my sweets? I spent most of the early evening answering the door to hordes of the 'Living Dead' with makeup and outfits that would have scared the life out of me when I was their age. It looked like a Hollywood movie set for a Resident Evil film in our road. Thankfully they weren’t after brains so all I had to worry about was my dwindling supply of sweeties. So with the weather looking not too great for the weekend, and with just under eight weeks till Christmas (eek!) it could be a good time to get brewing some winter wines or beers. If you’ve never made you own wine, beer or cider get yourself a kit from a good retailer, I can recommend www.art-of-brewing.co.uk as they have always provided me with excellent ingredients which have worked well, and after several recent failures using shop brought yeast I have vowed to use no-one else but them. You can get a three week Ginger Wine kit from them and a beginner’s equipment kit and then all you need is some empty wine bottles and a few weeks of waiting. Happy Gardening

As to why he was late.... well I figured it was too good an excuse not to share so.... Paul said: "A bit late with the newsletter this week as it was a fasting day yesterday and my brain had stopped working. My other half has decided to try out a diet known as the 5-2 diet. God knows why as she doesn’t need to. Anyway if you didn't already know the diet consists of eating normally for five days a week and then on two non-consecutive days you must fast. Or at most only eat a maximum of 600 calories in a day. So being the supportive partner I have decided to show my support and take part too. This is the first diet I have tried as I tend to eat good fresh food most of the time and am nearly (cough) the same weight as I was when I was 20 years old.
So for my starvation days I'm allowed 600 calories which I have to say meant nothing to me at all. Well that was until it was put into perspective when I found a pint of Vintage Cider contains 574 calories (and no fat I might add), that was almost all my daily intake in one go. I did briefly ponder what I could eat for the remaining calories to bring it up to my daily max, but the thought of 2 celery sticks and a pint of cider didn't sound like a healthy balanced diet. Did you know cooked French Beans have 22 calories per 100g but Red Kidney beans have 95 calories? Grapes have 17 calories and dried apricots have 160 per 100g. This is a minefield! How much effort is involved with making sure you don't go over the 600? I think the best option is to eat 2Kg of raw carrots and drink water all day. At least I'll be able to see well in the dark.
Happy Gardening"

That's brilliant Dutchy! ;D I like the sound of Paul! I think our school dinner company must've already read this as Friday's shepherd's pie was grated carrot in gravy with a mash topping served with...sliced carrots. There was no visable mince in the dish and I reckoned I ate my weekly carrot quota on one plate!
Now, Jerusalem artichokes. How do you eat those? There's a bit in one of the weekly gardening mags saying JA contain a carbohydrate that humans don't digest very well. Are they tasty enough to be worth growing?

;D Paul always sounds like the kind of person one would like to meet. Not sure if your carrot pie was his fault though JA are slightly sweet. They contain not a single bit of calorie and are very well for a diet. However I scrub them clean with one of those green backed kitchen sponges and then cut them in slices app. 1 cm thick and in the frying pan for 15 minutes bake them in..... dairy butter. Which of course undoes every bit of calorie free there was. The carbohydrate we do not digest can make some people a bit windy but so far neither I nor OH have any trouble. JA can be cooked as a spud for no longer that 15 mins or you have mush in water instead of something edible. The peel remains crunchy but I like that. Do not treat them as a veg, they were always a spud replacement from far before spuds arrived in Europe. ( as in the thing that came first so not a replacement at all ) You van also scrub them as clean as it gets then dice them and in an oven dish with sliced onions, mushrooms and some olive oil at a heat of 180 for half an hour ( prick to see if they are soft) and that is then almost calorie free. Are they worth growing? Yes as they are willing to grow anywhere. They are so easy( and yes they are pretty hard to get rid of if ever ). They grow up to 10 feet and if they did not fall over in high winds they would make a perfect hedge (mine live in a wood cage construction). Some people say they never saw them flower but mine have lovely little yellow sunflowers ( yes JA is Helianthus Tuberosus as in sunflower with .. tubers ) every year. How much does one need of them? One tuber planted will give a meal for four easily. I plant 5 in general and that gets me plus a friend through winter. You leave them in the soil and harvest at will unless frost is predicted but then you dig up what you think you will need during the hard frost period and store them in sand in a shed so you can get to them. JA themselves are fully hardy. Would you like me to send you some? I have a red peel variety as it is slightly better behaved than the white one I had before. Taste is exactly the same. One thing, there are people who say you can eat them raw.... Don't try it tastes horrid.

Thanks for all that info Dutchy. I'd love to try a few if you don't mind posting them. So the original JA stays in the ground all the time and springs back into life the following spring or do you use some of your saved tubers as a new start and plant them in spring?

Once I am healthy enough again, brdy cold, I'll collect some for you. Although I had better go and find a suitable cardboard box first ;D The old tuber disapears so one always uses new tubers. Small ones work as well as large ones... Even leaving half a bit of tuber in might soon see you up and running with a new plant. Bung them on the compost heap and you are knee deep in JA trouble. There, you can't say I did not warn you.

And Pauls thoughts on this week I post as well.
"Well it looks like another washout week for gardeners in the UK as severe weather warnings for torrential rain and 70mph winds going to hit later this afternoon and more rain over the weekend. I think I’ll be sitting by a nice warm fire and a cup of Hot Chocolate to keep me toasty this weekend, and the only plants I’ll be looking at will be in a catalogue."
So instead of following the moon it might be wiser to follow Paul's weekend advice.

And for this week his ramblings on this time of the year is as follows:
"The cold weather brings with it clearer air and with the clear air we’ve been getting some amazing sunrises and sunsets this week. Yesterday’s sunrise was a Salmon pink to Lemon yellow sky in the East and Indigo to Magenta in the west with a huge moon in the middle of it. One of the most spectacular sunrises I’ve ever seen. It’s a shame you can’t buy a camera which can capture the view in the same way as we see it. Well you might be able to buy one but I bet it costs an arm and leg.
Another benefit of the clear cold weather is the frost. In the spring a late frost is the gardener’s worst enemy, but in the late autumn it heralds the time to pick Sprouts, Parsnips and Sloes as they all benefit from a lick of frost to improve their flavour. As well as improving the vegetables and fruit frost also improves the soil structure in a process called ‘Frost Heave’. This is where the water crystals in the soil expand when frozen and lift the soil. When the Ice thaws it leaves air pockets in the soil thereby aerating it. If you’ve been good attentive gardeners and already dug over the vegetable beds and left large lumps of soil, the frost will also break these down ready for the spring bed preparations. This saves you some back breaking work and in my book that can only be a good thing. Frost Heave is also one of the reasons why people who follow a no dig principle to gardening don’t end up with compacted vegetable beds.
With the lead up to the Winter Solstice and Christmas upon us, the amount of work in the garden dwindles away to a minimum and we can start to look forward to the next growing season. If you are considering turning an area of grass into a vegetable bed next year, sadly it is not time to hang your boots up just yet, as you can start preparing the ground now. Don’t worry though it’s not going to be too much effort. Firstly peg out the area you want to use as the bed and cover it with cardboard. Then pile on top of the cardboard as much well-rotted manure as you can. I like to have about 12 inches of manure covering the cardboard. Now leave the bed until the spring. In spring time you can plant potatoes through the manure and into the soil (the cardboard should have all but gone by now) and leave for them to grow. When you harvest the potatoes you will dig over the bed in the process and it will be ready for the next crop. That’s a lazy way to start a vegetable bed but it works for me. I would normally put some gravel board up around the bed to turn it into a raised bed and this helps the manure from spreading out.
Happy Gardening"

Thought of our previous 'chat' when I got this email from T&M...

Jas the tubers I send you are just Jerusalem Artichokes. Nameless ones. 9.90 for a named variety is not exactly cheap It is a JA and not rootstock for a normal Artichoke I assume. An artichoke is by far more expensive so compared to that a pound per tuber is cheap ;D ;D ;D It is all "relative" our good friend Einstein said.

And what he wrote this week but without the pictures as these do not copy onto proboard. I googled Keyhole bed and it is actually quite good looking and might also be very effective. Cheers all and have a nice weekend
Dear X,
...carrying on from last weeks 'Where to plant stuff' guide, I should have mentioned more about the locations where you are going to plant your vegetables. It's important to have the plants you are going to be harvesting often closer to your food preparation area. So salads and herbs should be near the kitchen door and potatoes and brassicas can be further away. That way you can pop out and grab some Thyme whilst you preparing the food.
This idea has been used as the basis for the 'Keyhole Beds' where the most commonly used plants appear at the front of the beds and the single harvest plants are at the back. It allows you to maximise the amount of land for plants but gives you easy access to every part of the bed at the same time.
Another advantage of Keyhole beds is they make the garden look much more interesting. Take this example:
( no pic due to Prob. )
If you are lucky enough to have a large lawn and would like to grow some vegetables, this design of bed will ease you into the 'Grow your own' doctrine whilst not turning your garden into vegetable producing 'Somme Battlefield'. It may also help convince a less enthusiastic partner when you announce your plans to live 'The Good Life'.
Another great space saving idea is the Herb Spiral as seen here.
Source: themicrogardener.com via Paul on Pinterest Maybe try to find this on google as the pic also does not show.
In many respects the spiral emulates the environment the herbs grow in naturally and also helps to keep the more invasive varities under control.
What to plant?
You have a pretty good idea of where you are going to plant stuff but what should you be growing? I think the essentials you should be growing are Carrots, Onions, Celery, Potatoes, Leeks, Beans, Peas and Brassicas. Which is fine if you have plenty of land and you want to be self sufficient, but with more limited space maybe concentrate on more expensive or specialist vegetables and herbs. When I had more allotments I would grow Globe Artichokes, Bulb Fennel, Asparagus, and more interesting varieties of vegetables such as Pak Choi and Kohl Rabi. Don't forget you can mix vegetables into herbaceous borders, both varieties of Artichokes and Fennels are strong structural plants and will add substance to you present flower beds.
I hope this has given you some inspiration whilst you relax over the holidays, but don't get too relaxed as Boxing day is traditionally the day to sow Onion Seeds in the Greenhouse.
Happy Gardening

And some musings by Paul on what to do this new year with your peppers. Seems to me he needs a bigger house ;D
As the next two months are when we get the coldest temperatures and most of the snow, this is a great time to finish, or start, planning for the year ahead. Review the successes, and failures of the previous year. For us the warm dry weather we have been having for the past years had made us complacent, and last years wet summer ruined many of our crops. This year we'll grow out Tomatoes in a greenhouse for example, as our entire crop was ruined by blight, as where the early Winter Potatoes. Our Courgette's also suffered from the moisture, but we did discover the 'Zucchini' from Dobies really did grow as a small bush, and not as a huge trailing plant. Our Peppers and Chili's were all grown on Window sills and they where fantastic. The best results where obtained from a South facing window sill where we fed the Peppers on liquid Tomato food. We also had great success with Aubergines grown in the same way.

Ahum Clever old me thought the new board was the place to go to so I posted there and asked RF if I should post there or here as bits of board appeared to be missing. Oh well I retraced my steps to here to find it still going strong and apologise to those missing the moon planting bit. Here it is once more. Mind you there isn't much I can do in the garden ( or you I assume) other than feed the birds and disturb the mice once again ( we now have two new log piles and the cold can not hamper us as we can always start the fire, drink some wine and relax ;D

And Paul had a lovely comment again so I post that as well.......
Tomorrows forecast says 'Heavy Snow' and is accompanied by a Serious Weather warning to boot. For those of you in foreign climes where snow is a regular occurrence at this time of year, our 'Heavy Snow' is not the same as your 'Heavy Snow'. In fact it will amount to about 30cm at it's deepest, and as a result most of the UK will come to a complete halt. We should hang a sign on the front door of the UK declaring a national snow day. Many years ago I was lucky enough to be working at Sundance Resort in Utah, and one evening we were enjoying our evening meal when the waiter happened to mention we were going to have heavy snow that night. It was a very matter-of-fact mention and not what I would even call a warning of any sort. As I went to bed I was a little disappointed to see the sky was full of stars and there was no hint of any snow, I just assumed he had been wrong. (Being British we are used to the weather being wrong) So imagine how surprised I was to awake in the morning to discover 150cm of snow had fallen in the night. Double that surprise when I awoke the next morning to another 150cm of snow. It was incredible 3 metres of snow in two days. Expecting to find work cancelled I was amazed to see all the roads had been cleared each day before dawn and everyone was carrying on as if nothing had happened. That will not be the case in the UK tomorrow morning, trust me. So heavy snow means no jobs to do in the garden does it? Well actually not, if you have a hedge surrounding your garden and it has a flat top on it the heavy snow can wreck it. The weight of the snow can force itself down into the middle of the hedge and push it open in a 'V' shape. So as soon as you can take a garden broom and sweep the snow off the top of the hedge and any conifers too, and keep doing so as the snow builds up.
Happy Gardening

I missed this Dutchy! Paul is so right....we do need a 'This country is closed due to snow' sign. We'll only need it for a few days each year though, we can hang something else over the sign for the rest of the time!
There was a section of GQT devoted to Moon Planting last week. They were planting potatoes on earth days and non-earth days to see if it made a difference with the yield later on in the year.

Ah yes I do wonder if they do get a difference. There are people who do miracles this way but they tend to be the more attentive gardener and do a lot of feeding and other thingd that make the plants happy. I remember Bob Flowerdew erm... work with it and not getting what I would call a whopping difference. Ah well it helps keeping yourself from over active sowing Paul alas is still "hapsnap" with his information. I wonder when the next instalment will arrive. Ah about that sign... what would be the next warning they would put on it?

A hosepipe ban! South East Water like nothing better than a hosepipe ban, even if they have to snorkel somewhere to put the sign up!
