My strawberry seeds germinated like a rash and have been pricked out, no idea how long they will take before I get any fruit though

Jean I sowed those small woodland strawberries last year and had fruit that very year. Maybe you will with your strawberries too.

I don't think there will be any fruit this year Dutchy, but it was one of those things I just thought I'd like to try out They are full sized strawberries and will probably take a couple of years to reach maturity - in the meantime I've got some runners growing on nicely for this year

Monty Don has a column in the mail magazine, on saturday he advised moving strawberry plants every 3 yrs as they get past their best left in the same place.

Well the official taster arrived as expected and was giggling her head off when I came in from the greenhouse with it. No one else got a chance she ate it and declared in a loud voice .... that was "lubbily".
I put the plants in the greenhouse in January and as soon as they start to show some growth feed them with tomatorite.

My FIL used to grow loads of strawberries, in the ground, and I don't think I have ever tasted nicer ones.
It is one thing I have never thought about growing and I could only do it in tubs anyway - how easy/difficult are they to grow?

They are easy to grow RF, I started with two plants from the GC and now have about 14, all from the runners of the first two. I grow them in tall pots to keep the fruit off the ground, they are very hardy, I only use the greenhouse to fool them into fruiting earlier than they would naturally and get loads of strawbs as you can see in the second photo, but watch out for blackbirds stealing the ripe ones .... even out of the greenhouse

I have some in a hanging basket and some in a tub...they are flowering so can I feed them with tomato feed as thats all I have at the moment? This is my first time growing them, I got the runners given to me.

Well I have got a couple of tall tubs left over - what kind of roots do they have MH?? How many would I get in a 40 litre tub??

Mine are in pots about 24 inches tall and about 10 inches diameter at the top. I only have two plants per pot. The roots are seem to be similar to a tomatoes ?? I think. Does that help ? What dimensions are the 40 litre pots?

The two 40 litre posts that I have actually are 40 x 40 cms - roughly 16 x 16 inches - not very high are they??

I would probably put about nine plants into them RF, you'll have to watch the fruit stems that go "inward" cos you have to keep the fruit off the compost/soil, maybe with straw

Thanks for that Mowhay - now to persuade OH that we can't live without a pot of strawberries!!!
Can I use bark-chipping instead perhaps??

Would suppose so, I think the idea is to stop the fruit sitting on wet/damp soil or being contaminated. Suppose straw and bark are similar

Right - well I was at the GC and Farm Shop this morning and guess what they had - strawberry plants and the gardener himself was there, so I collared him. Ask him how many for a 50 litre tub (higher than the rest) and what sort I should have. He said "Polka" is a good strawberry and the fruit are not so big and are very sweet, so Polka it is. I think that he gave me too many plants (10) but I can also start another tub next year and give some away, I suppose. I covered the top with bark chippings as that is all I had got and after reading what you said Missy I don't think I want that. Anyway here they are - forgot to clean the tub before I did the pic... They look lovely neat little plants RF I have to confess I've done nothing with my plants lately other than giving them a feed and a leaf tidy up a few weeks or so ago Saying that they are flowering. I really need to give them a bit of boost with some good home made compo and another feed really.

Good for you Rf, I doubt you'll be giving plants away 'tho. You can never really have enough of your own strawberries. Last year despite having a dozen plants, none of them made it into a bowl. Mohay you've got very very early strawberries, bet your little grandchild was delighted. Chuckles I need to do something with mine as well, maybe next week.
