Going to try some cuttings in perlite/vermiculite a la RF

I don't have enough to use 100% vermiculite but I've used 50/50 vermiculite and seed compost to pot 3 Woodpecker cuttings today.

A quick question, I don't get to have a good look at the front garden during the week, this time of year it's hard enough to get the back pots watered before it gets dark i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/rolleyes.gif The lovely big Heavenly Blue that I got (so glad I didn't pay full price), has turned up it's toes, it was fine last week but when I went to look at it last night it had gone all woody up the stem & all the foliage & buds had collapsed. A bit like when the cuttings sometimes just die off for no reason. It's nice & damp at the base & I think I can see some growth coming from underground. I usually leave my Penstamons well alone from now on & cut them back in the Spring but do you think it might be worth cutting it back now to encourage the bottom shoots. I think as Penstamon suppliers go, Auricula wins hands down i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif as all the plants from Cornwall (that survived the kind attentions of Royal Mail) are wonderfully healthy, as are all their babies. If it were me I would leave it alone Jilly. The old stalks will give the new ones some protection and you can give it a good pruning in spring.

It's odd but one of my Pensham Skies has done just the same thing. I'm hoping its new spring growth is ok as it is very dry and crispy!

Thanks Jasmine, I've taken 2 lots tonight, Raven and Hidcott Pink from the one you sent me. I was surprised when I got up close and personal with it, to see how much it had come on. ;D Today one of my Hidcott Pink has died. i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/sad.gif I don't know why, it just blackened and died off. I've still got one on the go. The 2 Raven are fine in the water. The Woodpecker I took a cutting of and put into 50/50 Vermiculite and seed compost is doing fine so far.

Fingers crossed for you LG! Hidcote Pink is a sturdy not-so-little penstemon but cuttings just do their own thing don't they. I take about 6 cuttings at a time and I put 2 or 3 cuttings in a pot when I pot up. I did Thorn and Capricorn Moon last w/e and half of the cuttings were ready to pot on and half weren't I must get some Woodpecker going.

Thanks Jasmine, hope yours do well for you. How long do they take to root in the water. Do you think I should take mine out of the water and put them into compost? 29th August is when I took them. To loose only 1 I can live with but I hope not to loose any more. On a brighter note today I can see buds on my Hidcote Pink that you sent me as a cutting ;D.

That's great LG - it's such a pretty colour! I leave my penstemons in water until they have a really good root system - they either root and then get potted on or don't root and go horrid and get chucked away. Some take ages to root. Sometimes they need a mildew spray along the way too. I'm happy to send you more little potted up penstemons in spring. I won't send any now as we've/they've got to get through winter

Thanks for the info Jasmine, hopefully they'll stay alive long enough to root for me. You're right not to wait until springtime (and thank you very much for the offer) to give them a much better chance. ;D

Let's see what we have come spring! I've got a few potted up cuttings (one is a mystery - hasn't flowered for 2 years - I'm itching to know what it is!!) My Blue Springs is looking very sad and wilted - maybe I should get it back in the ground and hope it comes back to life in spring.

It might have more chance in the ground Jasmine, it's hard to know. They don't seem to last very long do they.

That's a nice healthy looking selection Rony.
Are you planning to overwinter them under cover somewhere?

Jilly, yes. A spare room in the house, not centrally heated. No greenhouse at the moment though I do plan to have one. Jasmine, it's so long ago, I can't remember exactly, though I think I did post on here. Gardening Direct are good on both quality and price, but they do take a long time to fulfil orders. The plants are about 3 inches high at the moment. They are 'large' plugs which could be planted out but I'm keeping them potted for now. Auricula, they look good now. I'm hoping they'll look even better!

I thought you'd ordered them a while ago Rony - either that or you'd done more ordering and not said! ;D Now we're due an Indian summer they should get going well before the cold sets in.

Thought I'd share this one that I grew from the free AG seeds. I think it's particularly pretty, if a bit late i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/rolleyes.gif . I've had a look & it's just one big stem though, hardly anything at the base, so unless it manages a few side shoots pretty quick I won't be able to do any cuttings & will have to take the chance that it survives the Winter.
