That's good news LG. My mystery cutting has finally flowered and it's Hidcote Pink!! 2 years it's taken it to flower A few of my Hayloft Icecream penstemons are flowering and they have been a bit of a surprise - they must have packed them after a glass or 2 of wine not the usual tea and cake! ;D

;D Lots of mine are still in flower, but I've been a bit remiss about deadheading them this week Nearly all the ones in my new bed at the front are still flowering like mad - especially the red ones

They're going to look cheery right up to the frosts which will be nice. I've just dug up the very dark purple one that wasn't blueberry fudge and replaced it with another blueberry fudge - hope this one is right!

When do you think we should stop dead-heading them?

I was just looking at mine this morning Geranium and thinking I must dead-head them. There must be a few weeks til the first proper frosts

Are they hardy.?

|
|
Post by Jasmine on Oct 9, 2011 13:28:35 GMT
They should be Barbara but some of them are not as hardy as others. The very broad leaves ones which include the Icecream collection but others as well aren't so good in our winters but the thinner leaved ones - Garnet, apple blossom etc...etc....are usually ok. A harsh winter will also finish older ones off too.

I took lots of cuttings this year, most of which are potted up and doing well. The cuttings that didn't grow roots straight awaay I left in the water, and most of them have rooted since! I think there are only about 6 left with no roots (or very few). I'll leave them - they still might root.

Thanks Jas, mine are thin leaved ones so I hope they will be OK.

Fingers crossed Barbara. Most of the older penstemons are ok - it's some of the newer introductions that don't seem to be so hardy.

Somewhere in the back of my head I'm coming up with narrow leaved Penstemons are more hardy than the broad leaved

Yes, me too - I'm sure it's true. My Garnet and P. elgar 'Queen of India' don't seem to suffer at all.

Apart from the Blue Springs I lost all mine last winter, both thin and thicker leafed ones. I'm hoping that more survive this winter, I've had them in longer so hopefully they will have got their roots down a bit. I've taken several cuttings and got a few to root, no idea which ones so they'll all be little mysteries next year I just hope this winter is less severe - one can only hope x Tig

I'm working on those hopes too Tig - the less severe winter and that spring babies make hardier plants.

I've got Raven Hidcote pink and Woodpecker in the ground, I'm hoping they'll come through for me. I've not had much luck with the cuttings but have managed a couple.

The cutting that fell in my bag at rosemoor was from sunburst amethyst. It was about 50cm tall (the plant - not the cutting!) so if it roots it may be another good one for a pot.
