When did you take them Missy - I find cuttings taken later don't all take and some penstemons are definitely easier to get going than others. I've tried several Russian River for Auricula and had no luck at all

I think summer cuttings may do better Missy. The cuttings I took of RF's special budd took easily through summer too but not all in autumn.

They do better if you take them throughout the spring and summer - I take my final ones at the beginning of September

Sorry Jas - we crossed. I take them regularly from May to Sept Missy

So we did! ;D I will try some cuttings when I cut my penstermons back in a few weeks time - only because I can't bear to compost all the green shoots.

well I have very tall leggy half dead looking plants in my pots but there are shoots at the bottom of some so hope that if I leave them alone I might get some flowers this year...one can always hope

That sounds hopeful Missy - just cut the leggy bits of when it starts to warm up a bit - in a few weeks time - and the new shoots will grow and flower this summer.

Most of mine have survived this winter, much to my delight as I'd decided to give up on them if they all popped their clogs again And I did manage one pot of 'miscellaneous' cuttings Just hope we don't get any really late frosts this year x Tig

So do I, as I have cut all mine in the borders, back to about 1/3 their height. Still, I have loads of babies if they fail

My Penstemon Hidcote Pink from Jasmine last year have come through the winter well. They're about a foot and half high. Now do I cut them back and try to make cuttings from the bits I chop off or what should I do. I've got some small growth on Woodpecker and Raven too I think but it's near the ground.

Depends if you think you'll get any frosts LG. I've cut all mine back to about 6" from the ground. Have the Hidcote Pink ones got new growth near the ground too? It's usually best to wait until there is new growth from the bottom as well as on the stems before cutting them back

That's just what I did yesterday LG! I cut some of them back to about 8" (more to today when I've got my school work out the way) and then took the best bits of each penstemon and stuck them in jars of water. I'm not sure they'll come to anything but I shall try again with new growth come late spring so nothing lost and it's worth a try!

I've already got squillions of babies, so I'm going to be very good and wait to take cuttings until I get back from holiday ;D

Thanks very much Ladies, I've been out in the garden on and off all morning. I'll go out again in a little while and cut them back to about 6-8 inches from the ground provided they have new growth. Any decent sized cuttings will go into a jam jar of water in the kitchen. Is that right? ;D

Post by Jasmine on Feb 26, 2012 12:56:46 GMT
Sounds perfect LG. I put mine in separate jam jars with a plant label sellotaped to the side so I know what's what but then you know what I'm like about knowing what plants are! ;D.

Right Jasmine, a little row of jam jars it is then. ;D

That's a funny thought - a little row of jam jars in Belfast and a little row of jam jars in East Sussex ;D

;D I managed to get Raven, Woodpecker and Hidcote Pink cuttings, they're sitting in a little row on the kitchen window.

;D Good luck LG. They would be ok outside in your little grow house in your covered yard if you don't want to pamper them too much. Mine are in the lean-to/lobby thing! The water freezes to ice when it gets really cold.

Thanks for the advice Jasmine, I might put them outside as they'd have more light although less heat.
