Rooting cuttings in water, do you just cut them below a leaf joint?

I'm not even that precise Tel, I just take any broken off bits & pop them in a jam jar.

Me neither. I just strip off the lower leaves and make sure about 10cms of stalk is in the water.

I don't use rooting powder - I find they root really easily in compost...but....I have absolutely NO success with water

Just been potting on some penstemon babies. They've all been outside on the gravel nursery bed and we had a lot of rain last night. All were very wet........................except Louise Wilson I potted on about half a dozen LWs and all their compost was as dry as a bone They weren't grouped together and were open to the elements, she must just be a quick drainer....worth keeping an eye on if you have her in a pot

They're the digitalis ones, I did grow Husker's red at some time but don't know if I still have it. I'm rubbish at seeds Dorothy Wilson dries out a bit too.....must be the name. It's my maiden name actually,( my "proper" name) so I grow lots of them ;D

I've got huskers red Andy, (Auricula I sent you a cutting last year - did it not survive!!) I thought I'd lost it as after flowering it disappeared completely, although it was overshadowed by other plants. To my amazement it has sprouted up in quite a big clump this year so fingers crossed it is settled in and performs well again. I'm delighted that so many of mine have survived the winter, although I haven't cut them back yet as we are still getting frosts. I notice I've lost one of the Blue Spring but the two others look OK so I must try and get some cuttings rooted from them this year. All my other losses are red ones, and none of the cuttings I took from those grew x Tig

Hope they are toughies like all their brothers and sisters ;D Light of life, Willys Purple, Hidcote Pink and the one I muddled it up with and put in the wrong place (whose name eludes me at this moment), are all looking very strong and healthy x Tig

They move ok Tig if you want to relocate the one that's in the wrong place. My poor old Garnet did a whole tour of the garden before it eventually got cheesed off with me! ;D

I'm not going to risk it Jas, it seems happy where it is and my beds/borders are not that well colour co-ordinated anyway .... I tend to think of them as 'Rainbows' of flowers ;D

Most of the cuttings I took have died off. I've salvaged a couple of Raven and now have them in perlite mixed with mp compost so we'll see what happens. The mother plants are hanging in there.

Once they get sprouting LG it'll be a good time to try some more cuttings if you want. Have you read CK's article in this month's (well, April technically! ;D) GW magazine. She was saying that at this time of the year there are lots of growth hormones at the base of new sprouts and if you take cuttings they just want to root and get growing. Makes sense I guess.

I just got it today Jasmine and had a quick flick through it. I might try some again when they grow a bit.

Eleanor Young was the one I forgot the name of yesterday, spotted the label as I weeding earlier I'll get some cuttings as soon as they have a few more inches of new growth showing, or could I use the older bits that I prune off? x Tig

I have placed some cuttings of Electric Blue into water, will see if they do anything. The 3 cuttings of Electric Blue, have now produced roots. I took the cuttings by cutting just below the leaf joint in the same way i take dahlia cuttings, if this made a difference or not i do not know.

That's how I did it too but our water has a lot of chlorine in it, perhaps that's why mine did'nt work. I'm hoping for much better results now that I've got plenty of perlite, I might even get some Lavender (which everyone else says is easy) to root for me this year.
