I've taken a dozen or so cuttings from the red pelagoniums in the front garden, if this lot all take the pub in bloom will be seen from the moon.

Without expecting anything I took hardwood cuttings of my Verveine plant ( Aloysia triphylla ). I bunged them in the GH and watered. I thought no more about them but lo and behold they have got little green leaves all of a sudden. This plant can not live through outdoor Winter so I get it inside and that is a bother. It looses leaves, gets greenfly inside, is difficult with watering and and and. But I love the smell. Now that the cuttings seem to have taken I will try and give them some extra protection as it freezes in my GH as well as outside but perhaps a little extra tent of fleece helps. Has any one got a good idea of how to keep them safe without having to get them indoors?

I love the smell too Dutchy. I lost mine last winter, but it had survived for 2 years here outside in a pot, it died right back but I think the year it came back I'd wrapped the pot to protect the roots, so possibly if you can stop the compost from freezing it might help . What I usually do if I've got a few cuttings to overwinter is to leave all but one in the GH to take their chances & just bring one indoors. One plant is easier to look after indoors than loads & if you lose the others, you've still got one to take cuttings from next year.

Mine has overwintered fine for the past 10 years. I basically treat them like a fuchsia, leave them till spring then cut hard back. No other protection.
They are fairly slow getting going in the spring so either do the old "thumb test" on the bark or just give it time.

As in you have yours outside andy ? Either you are in a very mild area or you grow them in full soil that has natural central heating. Fuchsia also does not overwinter here unless it is one of the shrubs with the small red purple bells. Forgot the name. I am going to leave the three growing cuttings in the GH then. I'll see how they fare during winter.

Dutchy the fleece should help but if you had any polystyrine you could build them a little nest inside the GH. Worth a try if you can get some, it's good insulation.

Interested to see what happens Dutchy as I don't think you have a chance - well, unless we get a really mild winter....no way will they be able to stand over minus 20 as we so often get!! A magazine recently was suggesting winter protection for Buddleias...grow like weeds in the UK don't they!! RF

I have bubble wrap Ladygardener as it is inside the GH this might work I also have a plastic CF which is out of use I might try and build that up inside the GH. And I can place a small oilburner inside the GH. That makes three options of protection. I merely need to remember doing it in time...... You might be right Rosefriend. Mind you there are buds on the lotties that sit in dry positions and they got through the cold of last February unscathed ( mostly ) However Verveine can not stand any strong frost. Will keep you all posted on the results andy . I do wonder how cold your cold is. I am zone 6 to 7 at home but the lottie counts as zone 5 effectively.

The other week I took some cuttings of some trailing Pelargonium I'd bought last year as plugs and overwintered. I stuck them into a jam jar of water on the kitchen window ledge and at least one of them is making roots now. Thought I'd try it as I did'nt have any compost at the time.
When I was cutting back the Wallflowers I prepared some cuttings, stuck some in the ground near the plants and others into modules. They're for Jenny for next spring all being well. You don't often see the lovely peachy ones when you buy them in the garden shops, they're mostly burnt orange or yellow.

A pelaronium which was a lovely shade of pink, somehow dropped a cutting into my bag recently. I've got it in 100%perlite at the moment to see if it will grow on for me. I need to take some more cuttings as some of my Salvia and Fuschia have keeled over. Barbara, they say you can if you must, take cuttings from side shoots that do have flowers on them, just pinch out the flower buds. That lovely shade of pink Pelargonium overwintered and grew on well for me. It's a lovely little plant now and blooming.

A cat I guess has jumped off the fence and into the perennial wallflower and broken lots of pieces off it, never one to miss an opportunity, I've put them into a pot of compost and I'll see what I get from it.
I've also taken a dozen cuttings from some fuchsias.

I've been taking cutting off the erysimums, the variegated one and the pretty one in the front garden that Jilly thought was winter sorbet I think. So far they seem to be doing OK. Think I will try taking a few off the bowles mauve tomorrow.

I took some from my Winter Orchid a few weeks ago, (just put them in water as I always do) but they've all rotted off . They worked fine like that last year, I'll have to take some more as my Mum has promised one to a friend of hers. This is the problem, I never work well under pressure

I've stripped all the lower leaves off and put them round the edge of pots, in mpc, in a shady position. So far so good

The one I sent you should take well Rosefriend. I've taken some cuttings from the hardy Fuschia. I am hoping it does LG - lovely plant and it smells gorgeous. Great on the Fuchsia cutting, thanks - I adore Fuchsia's and I am really angry that I threw away loads of plants but it is room to overwinter them... RF EDIT: Forgot to ask Ladygardener - I have bunged them in water - is soil better??

I haven't taken any cuttings at all this summer but had a mad moment today & although it's a bit late I've just done a pot full of a lovely scented leaved Geranium called Attar of Roses, it's been beautiful & scented the whole patio all summer, but the original plant has got huge & there's no way I'll be able to bring it in, so I thought I'd give them a go in loads of perlite.

I've taken some cuttings of a couple of variegated pelargoniums one of which is Frank Headley that Jenny bought me although I'm going to overwinter the mother plant out back as well. Some of the basil tops that I'd taken off my plants have rooted for me in water, 2 more fresh basil plants for nothing. Jilly the Attar of Roses sounds devine, could I beg a cutting if you get them to take please? The Fuschia cuttings rooted and have gone to their new home far far away. I've stuck in a couple more just in case I loose the parents. I've also stuck a few other Fuschia into water, these were tender ones 'tho not the hardy ones. We'll see how they do. I've taken a few Salvia cuttings but they don't seem to be doing much at the moment. Rosefriend, how are your lemon pelargonium cuttings doing?

You'll be very welcome to one Ladygardener, (if they grow), as usual I did a whole pot full, just in case & the plants get so huge you I'll only need the one

I do so love Fuchsia's and you can't get them as Plug plants here.... The Salvia is great isn't it!! The Pelargonium cuttings are good too...to the left are the Streptocarpus cuttings that I pinched and then the lemon Pelargonium and top right is another one that OH wanted - took 3 of those as well but only one has survived.. They're looking good Rosefriend, it's been my first year growing scented leave Geraniums, I've only got the rose one, but lemon sounds lovely too. I don't know if Heucheras work from stem cuttings, but I was pulling out dead bits from my Redstone Falls earlier & managed to pull off a whole good stem loverolleyesso nothing ventured, I've put it in some water to see if I get something.

I am amazed at the price of scented Geraniums Jilly,, especially when they are so easy to propogate... the one that Ladygardener sent me has been a dream and it also kept mozzies away from our garden table which was lovely.. Been meaning to take a pic for ages - remember the Alstomeria that you sent me Tig, well the bit of root...look at this then.. RF

Rosefriend, those are looking really well. Jilly, thanks, I'll see if I can get you a cutting or two of the lemon scented one. I keep one near where I sit when I'm outside having my coffee and a smoke and rub it on my fingers and then they smell great. wink Best of luck with the Heuchera ones.

Keep that alstroe contained RF! It really is a do-er. My scented pelargoniums survived outside last winter!!! I should have been taking cuttings from lots of them, but space is limited, so it will just be down to luck what survives this year.
