Anyone doing any cuttings at the moment or recently?

I'm doing some more Lady Boothby cuttings as I'm not sure how hardy the plants are. Mine (that Isabella sent me as tiny cuttings) are about 6ft high now so I don't really have anywhere to keep them overwinter.

I've been taking geranium (pelargoniums) and fuchsia cuttings plus trying for cuttings from some shrubs which haven't been very successful.
I have had Lady Boothby for a few years now and I overwinter it in the cellar - dark and frost free. Have you got a shed/garage that you can put it in Jasmine, wrapped in bubble wrap or fleece, off the ground if possible. Don't forget to keep the earth a little moist but it could be worth a try perhaps.

It could go in the shed RF - do you cut yours back before you put it in the cellar to overwinter or in spring?

I cut it back to around half, and when it starts shooting in the Winter/Spring, as it is in the dark, I take those shoots as cuttings and then, around the end of February, I cut it back by half again and re-pot it in fresh earth and add some fertilizer.
Up to now it has worked for me - it is a rather nice fuchsia.

It is a pretty fuchsia and I didn't realise how tall mine had got until I noticed that it had grown right round the basket above it and up beyond the flowers in that. Thanks for the info RF - will try that for myself.

Three months ago I took some cuttings off our old and woody curry plant (Helichrysum angustifolium) and just stuck them in around the edge of one of my tomato pots in the GH. Apart from daily watering they have had no attention whatsoever, and now that the 'host' tomato plant has died back I was pleased to find that all five cuttings had developed good roots so having never tried growing this particular plant from cuttings before I am quite impressed with the 100 percent success. i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif Another tomato pot has had six bottlebrush (Callistemon) cuttings planted in similar style for the last two months but these haven't taken yet but they are still very much alive so there is still hope.

I can't resist taking cuttings - even this late in the season. I have just taken the last ( honestly ) cuttings from some big, blowsy fuchsias.

I used to take cuttings from everything that I chopped it became a bit of an addiction ;D Even if it wasn't something I wanted more of I just couldn't resist. I'm cured now ;D I just do stuff that I'd like more of or that friends want and I limit myself to 6/8 cuttings. Still got some lovely top growth on a couple of Penstemons that I'll put in as cuttings.

I have stopped taking cuttings for this year - I think I will start again in the spring when I take my fuchsia cuttings - I never seem to have much luck with the ones taken at the end of the summer I cut back the fuchsias in the baskets, removing all the leaves and hang them up in the greenhouse - they grow very slowly over winter and there is usually lots of lovely new growth by early spring.

I should have done the Salvia uliginosa but it is flowering it's head off and all new shoots still produce flowers It is one of those modest plants that grows up to 6 feet. I think the one in pot will be saved instead of taking cuttings. The Penstemons are still looking great but how do I know if they have taken as long as no roots grow out of the pot? Pulling seems cruelty to youngsters.

I was given a big chunk of Hucera (a burgundy one? name) from a neighbour about a month ago. No real root on it just a long stalk. I planted it into the ground in the flowerbed, despite the awful weather. It's obviously really hardy as she had it growing outside all year. It's taken well and I took 2 little cuttings from it and have them out the covered back and they've taken too from the looks of things. Hopefully they'll all grow for me as I've not been successful in the past and it's a smashing looking plant. ;D

I cut back my Lemon Verbena inside and thought I would just give it a shot the easy way. Bunged some off the new shoots after pulling off the main stems I cut away in a glass of water. How one is supposed to really do them I do not know.

Well done LG, I love plants for free ;D I'm not sure what will and won't root in water Dutchy but I always think it's worth a try. You could put a few in a pot of sandy compo and try them that way too

I had a google LG and was met with this mostly... Propagation method(s):Seed But it's worth a try if there are some bits that you could experiment with.
