There seem to be a number of possibilities here Barbara, but the most obvious one to consider is that your PC may have become infected by 'malware'. The easiest way to resolve this is to download the free utility Spybot Search & Destroy from this link.... www.spybotupdates.com/files/spybotsd160.exeSave the file somewhere memorable, such as on your desktop and then double click the icon to run it. If that doesn't do the trick, repost here.

Sorry FB I have only just seen this. As the link none too clearly puts it ( ) it's really a way for Microsoft to ensure that they are only providing support and updates to people who have genuine Microsoft operating systems/software. It is perfectly safe to download and run this tool, and essentially if you don't you will likely find that you are unable to download updates from the Microsoft Update website... update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

I always use an IMAP setting, which only reads direct from the mailbox, it doesn't download the emails. I make a point of deleting old and unwanted emails from the mailbox (I get thousands of spam emails per year, well you would with nine email addresses). I never have this problem.

I must say that this does sound like a server issue to me too. I use OE at home and due largely to laziness I currently have 1540 unopened emails, but this has no impact on my ability to receive new ones.
Apart from Thunderbird, one solution would be a Gmail/Googlemail account which has a very generous 7.2 Gb mailbox allowance.

The problems at the moment on GWD are known as a DDOS attack (distributed denial-of-service attack) - basically an virus attack on Proboards - or an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users and it generally consists of the concerted, malevolent efforts of a person or persons to prevent an Internet site or service from functioning efficiently or at all, temporarily or indefinitely.
Proboards have added another 6 servers which has calmed the situation down a little and are going after the person that started the attacks.

I keep getting a message to say "Data unavailable" is this what you mean Rose
|
|
|
Post by Rosefriend on Oct 9, 2008 16:34:15 GMT
Yes, what is happening is that Proboards are under attack - they in turn are fighting the attackers with all they have (software, firewalls) and this costs energy...which makes the board very slow or the data can't get through at all. They have added the 6 servers to give more energy to the forums and to increase their power attack against - well "whoever".
It is complicated but that is as simple as I can make it..hope that helps.

Hi, Rose. I am tempted to ask whether the server is a Microsoft server or Linux server. It would be interesting to know if they are targetting only Microsoft or if it's general.

I have just had another look and I can certainly give you the link should you be interested Larkshall.
The DDOS attack affected all servers - even Netscape etc. I think the fact that they had to put on another 6 servers to even start to combat the issue shows that it was a fairly massive attack - it basically slowed down/shut down 107 servers.
To what percentage Proboards use Microsoft/Linux etc, I do not know - it would be interesting to find out.

I haven't got any smilies either Barbara and there are lots of other things missing off each thread like reply/quote and modify. I am also having trouble with photobucket and can't just left click copy and then paste a photo to GWD anymore - I have to go all round the houses to do it. The Indian Rocks photos nearly ended up with the computer in the garden! (Confused smiley!)

I have just checked on Proboards Support and there seems to be a few server problems.
However they are aware of what is happening. I will let you all know as soon as I hear anything.
