Location: 07 Rimor Sailer 645TC Transit twin-RWD, Cottingham Update: Hairy monster has been to the vet again today for another (3rd) lot of blood tests. He's had 2 lots of tests: one for his liver enzymes and the other for his Cushings medication.
His 2 earlier (last year) lots of liver enzyme tests showed that they were nearly off the scale at over 1000, for his liver test today his enzymes have come down to 800, not great but at least they are now going in the right direction (should be around 200/250).
We've just got to wait to get the result of the Cushings medication tests they did today, last time it showed it was working very well and had excellent control of his Cushings, hopefully when we get the results back next week it'll be the same again.
He's pottering a little bit more although his feet are still 'uncomfortable', even with a good soak and shampoo/clean every night (up to an hour!), we're managing to keep the fungal infection at bay with some miniscule improvement I think, but to add insult to injury the poor little mite now has an ear infection!!!
He's fairly perky though - he actually came to greet us at the front door on Monday when we got in from work, and gave us a nice wag of his tail, something he hasn't done for months! I just wish this blasted cold weather would disappear so I could take him out more for some fresh air i his buggy. Ahh Maggy thank you for that link i have only just seen your reply. The lady says her dog liver enzyms are at 1000 just befor christmas Charlies was 1800 and i think that was what was worrying our vet. He is still going hes of his cushings tablets for 3 weeks because the last cushings test 2 weeks ago showed he was taking to high a dose. He goes back to the vet next week for another check on his cushings after no medication for the last 3 weeks. I expect him to do a liver enzyme test to. So next week will give us more news.

Well update on latest test. After 3 weeks of no tablets suprise suprise his result have shot up again. So hes back on his cushings tablets again. The vet phoned me on Friday with the results and i have been in tears all weekend with worry. I just think if the results dropped dramiticly last time he was on them they will do the same again. So i phoned my vet this morning and asked him what he thought to this and he said yes they will but one of his other vets had phoned the makers of this drug up because she had a dog doing the same thing and they told her to keep giving her patient the drugs. So my vet is doing the same. He did admit to me today that it is a trial and error with these tablets are new and the vets dont no everything about them. So with a bit of luck they will get hin stabelized soon. They better do if you cant trust your own long standing vet and the makers of these drugs who can you trust? As for the mass in his liver we are leaving that to chance seeing as hes ok at the moment.

I really feel for you in your heartache snowowl i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/kiss.gif but just as long as the little one is free from pain that is all you can do is wait and see! it might take a few months mightent it for them to start having an effect! I like you lost lots of sleep when my lst little chi was having seizers and collapsing the vet didnt know how to treat him I dont think it was just hit and miss and it was a big miss when he gave him phenobabitone!! I just wish I had changed Vets then to the one Ive got now but hindsight is a good thing. Good luck with little one and plenty of love and cuddles to him from me. maggyXX

Just an update on Charlie for those who are wondering how hes doing. Hes been back on his tablets now for the cushings for a month and he seems to be picking up a bit. He was not very well for the first 3 weeks of tablets but they must be kicking in now. He has his good days and bad days hes due for another set of blood test on the 24th of this month so hopefully he will get stabelized on his dosage. I have trimmed all the fur of his paws today and bathed them all in T-Gel and they seem a little easier for him because the medication hes on is giving him problems with his feet. He does seem to be at his worst in the night hes very jumpy and moans a lot he must be feeling something but cant tell me. But all in all hes not doing bad and hes on Hill LD food now to thats made for dogs with liver deseise So we are doing all we can for him and its paying of so far.

Snowowl, that sounds like positive news. Hill's diets are really good (Jess is on one of them) and hopefully the tablets will get working completely. Good luck with the bloodtests on the 24th. Give him a big hug from me.

Just copied this bit for you its about Midge that is also suffering with cushings on the other web site I visit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Currently trying 2 different types of antibiotic cream, one side has one lot put on, the other side the 2nd lot ... we'll see which one seems to help the most and then just use that one. Must say though that the athlete's foot powder for his feet has worked wonders, they are virtually clear of the 'yeast' infection, with just a little of the 'black' infection every now and then, hence why he can potter much more. Spent 2 hours (not all at once!) cleaning, clipping etc him yesterday and he does seem better for it but it is really tiring especially now he's feeling a bit better as he can't half put up a fight ... wouldn't have it any other way though! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I think he is much more advanced though than your little man but they are trying anything and everything to make him comfortable. big hugs to you Im really feeling for you.

He also had his usual kidney heart and liver enzimes test and the first 2 are fine but a slight increse in the last one again. Hes also got a infection which is common with liver patients and is on a course of antibiotics. But hes picking up and ok at the moment. He has to go back to see the vet in 10 days and he shouls be even more hiself then.

Just got back from the vets. They have taken Charlie of his cushings tablets for 2 weeks because its giving him a skin reaction which is worse than the cushings. I have to bathe his feet and face in medicted shampoo and i put baby lotion on his feet to soften them. Hes also given him another course of antbiotics in case he get an infection in his skin. Its the skin problem that is upseting him now its so itchy and sore. He had a feel of his tummy and cant find any lumps or any that are getting any bigger but the mass they saw was deep in his liver but its a good sign i tell myself that its not enlarged. He is perky in him self and im sure once we have the skin problem sorted he will be his old self. So thats the news upto date. Back to see the vet in 2 weeks. i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif

Update on Charlie hes suffering realy bad with his feet again.I bathe them for him daily. Hes been to the vets again today and he took some skin scrapeings on his feet. Phoned me up later this afternoon to say there no evadence of skin mites hes saying its his liver causing him the problem. Hes of his cushings tablets still the vet wants to do a biopsy on his feet under a gerneral anesthetic. He wont give him any pain killers because of his liver so i will not put him through a biopsy. What ever that could prove the vet wont treat so theres no point. I will push him around in a pushchair if i need to. The only problem with that is Charlie is so stubbern and independant he would not let me. So its just a case of keeping him as comfotable as we can. I realy am so down at the moment. Hes still eating and doing all the other things outside and hes walking but like on egg shells. But apart from that i think hes ok.

A big hug to you and Charlie. Keeping him comfortable will help hugely as you won't change a feisty old dog now SO - I know - there's no point trying to change them. He will be an independent soul for ever. Jx

I bet he would rip off anything you tried to put on his paws to protect them SO What a shame for him .. I wonder if that cream for cracked heels would work for dogs? I bought some last year and it seemed to do the job in a week. Probably not a good idea! Good luck with him, just continue to do your best, you can do no more than that x Tig
