I enjoyed the first GW with Monty and noticed how quickly the programme seemed to fly by just like in the good old days instead of the trendy version that seemed to go on forever. I thought it was quite amusing that - if I understand correctly - nobody but Monty will be allowed in his garden whilst the others can amuse themselves swanning around the country! i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/grin.gif Hoping for a continued improvement tomorrow evening (Friday).

Probably just me, but I didn't think there was much 'useful' information in tonights programme I thought the bit on eremurus was a bit misleading? They showed a label for Cleopatra, which is a peachy/orange colour, then showed a yellow flower! Also, to flower they need winter cold, if planted out now they may not produce flower spikes? It was also said that they need good drainage which is true or they may rot during winter, although there was no mention that they shouldn't be allowed to dry out in summer x Tig

I saw Monty's GW for the first time last night. Not sure what I think R de T cutting back in Enid Blyton's old garden, Monty sorting out his Long Walk and Jewel Garden and the bubbly CK looking at magnolias in Cornwall - right place to go at this time of the year for a gorgeous display! Told OH we need a Jewel Garden. ;D

I fell asleep towards the end ( during the pruning) I hope i't'll get more interesting as the weather warms up, but it does seem to be a rather uninspiring garden. When you think of all the colourful photos folks are posting on here, you'd think someone like Moga would have a bit more to show it's spring.Still, I live in hope

To be honest I watched it on catch up and used the fast forward button. There is'nt anything in Monty's garden that inspires me at all. Those Magnolia were incredible. I could'nt believe the size of the one Carol had in her hand.

Maybe his garden will be more inspirational when stuff gets going - didn't even see any daffs last night - don't know how many weeks they are out of sync with the real world. I liked how they transposed the summer lavender garden at Enid Blyton's old house over the bare beds and sticky grey winter lavender mounds.

I quite liked the bits showign Monty's garden. it is a bit bare but at leats there was some practical advice. Carol's sequence was a bit unnecessary I thought. Nice trees but... Enid Blyton - all very well, but I couldn't make out how or why she was pruning the roses so why show it. You'd think at this time of year they would have lots to talk about / show what to do. If not, why not start broadcasting in a few weeks. I only saw a few episodes of last year's show and tho it had it's faults it wasn't that bad.

Think Monty is still finding his feet after his illness - I will still continue to watch him and GW now I was amazed at the size of the flower from the Magnolia tree - they looked quite small in the sky, in comparison

On Bighty at the moment is the start of a re-run of old GW's. I'm watching the one at the start of Berryfields 2nd year with Monty Don, Carol Klein, Rachel De. Thame and Jo Swift all in it. They really did pack a lot into the programme, even in the 15mins I've been watching. If anyone is interested, it's repeated at different times today and are showing episodes 1 and 2.It might be a regular thing for a Sunday morning.

What did we think of last nights programme then? I enjoyed the bit on dahlias, but thought Joe was very rude as he kept interupting the man! We seem to be having more 'topiary' - wonder if that is down to Montys influence? The info on the box virus wasn't that clear though - unless I blinked? And I thought the sweetpea sowing was slightly contentious with regard to autumn versus spring sowing, and soaking or not soaking? I'm orf to sow some dahlia seeds x Tig

Better, this week I thought. I liked the dahlia man, but even OH ( marooned on sofa and forced to watch ;D) shouted at Joe to shut up and let the man speak!! Don't necessarily agree about sweet peas as my autumn sown ones are now quite tall and should flower about when he'll be planting his out My "Bishops Children " seeds are up and seem strong enough

The 3 dahalias I bought and planted yesterday were the same as the 1 he did last night, but mine were 98p each not £3.99. that he paid, I'd better tell him about Wilkies. ;D

I'm afraid to say that I nodded off towards the end of last night's GW but whilst I disagree with Monty's opinion on autumn vs spring sown sweet peas I do agree that it is a load of nonsense about needing to chip, soak or whatever. I do the same as him just sow straight from the packet and never have any problems. The dahlia man seemed very knowledgeable and without Joe's continuous interruptions we might have gleaned a bit more from him. i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/wink.gif

The garden looks a bit dark and forbidding being divided up with dense, dark hedges. There doesn't seem to be much "flow" Perhaps it'll look better when / if there is more colour in it. I still can't warm to Moga though - too preachy

For someone who carries the mantel of the nation's head gardener I think some of the stuff he comes out with is a disgrace. He admitted that he had trimmed his box (buxus) hedges in October i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/shocked.gif and the damage frost damage was plain to see. Any self respecting gardener knows that box should be trimmed on Derby Day (just a memorable date meaning the first week in June). Sweet peas? He said it again, 'Spencer's have little scent'.....the man's an idiot! Also he proceeded to show us how to sow them in small pots now...... why not just sow them in situ now? IMHO, the only present day gardening presenter is with any credability is Carol Klein.

I'm glad it's not just me that feels the programme is lacking a bit at the moment. If I were new to gardening I don't think I'd be inspired, and as a mature gardener I've been a little dismayed by the quality of advice given. We all have to cope with different conditions and the programme should reflect that. I am also somewhat annoyed that we won't be shown what happened in the 'new' garden in the heart of Birmingham - after what must have been some significant investment by the Beeb! I was looking forward to seeing the aftermath of the harsh winter on the 'tropical' borders and various other design features, it makes gardening challenges real in terms of what we can and can't achieve due to Mother Natures interventions Tig

I love Monty and shall continue to watch GW - wish CK would leave tho and take Joe with her Not sure if like AT anymore he seems a little big headed these days There have been some really boring male presenters - some no longer with us sadly in the far past - so Monty is a breath of fresh air and makes us all sit up and take notice

I have to agree he is boring, his garden does nothing for me , all those balls I know we can't all like the same people so sorry Jenny, but I'm with Tig, he is uninspiring but you'll find if you go back a loooooong way on this thread I've said that all along. On the subject of Carol I think if she would only STOP laughing All the time I could see her doing GW, because she IS a good gardener who knows her stuff.

I find Monty boring and too earnest and in sharp contrast Carol is too giggly and over enthusiastic. I'm not sure who I would choose. I just want to learn something more interesting about gardening. Monty's garden does not inspire me. Not interested in straight lines and topiary! What happened to the BBC garden from the last series. I feel sorry for Toby. i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/cry.gif
