I only watched it last night on the i-player Ladygardener, I thought the Geranium that Carol bought was pink think it was called Evelyn but she repeats it several times on there if you've got a recording. Glad you remembered the name of the Lunaria, I like the look of that too, I might have to look out for some seeds. My Mum was going on about the new Geum, Roger's Rebellion, I've looked it up & because it's so new it's only available from the original nursery in Cumbria, it's not very expensive, but I don't think they do proper mail order, so I've told her she'll have to wait until it's more widely available

Carol bought Geranium cinereum 'Melody' - a vibrant pink one, I made a note I have been mispronouncing penstemon according to Carol, it should be Pen-stemon - it was the old, small flowering pink one of them which was called Evelyn I think. I enjoyed Beechgrove this week, think I seem to learn more from that than I do from GW, perhaps it is because they often do trials, I thought the planting distances on the cabbages will be interesting. Did anyone notice the 'tip' on the allotment programme last week about sprinkling a dusting of ground cinnamon over the top of freshly sown seeds to prevent damping off? Evidently cinnamon has natural anti fungal properties. I will try it next year.

Thanks Tig for the name of the Geranium, I don't know why I thought purple when it's clearly not. I really like the look of it and I see they're getting lots of orders following the programme. Jilly, I'm not surprised your Mum liked the Geum, I did as well but she has great success with hers does'nt she. I won't buy any more until I see how Totally Tangerine is going to perform. I have homes to find for a few little Mrs. Bradshaw's as it is. That's an interesting tip about the cinnamon Tig, I think I missed it on the programme.

Why not - it is along the lines of microwaving the soil and watering with chamomile tea or washing everything in bleach - can't say that I have ever had so many problems with damping off...do hope it is a better tip that having the bud graft on roses over the earth - spoke to Olaf about that - he said, very tongue in cheek, that he wonderered which of the people concerned had shares in the rose business...or nurseries, as many more roses would be sold... One tip that I did think was good and I have since used, was on Beechgrove when he (older man) was potting something on and instead of crocks be used some of the lumps and rubbish from the compost to put on the bottom of the pot - just happened to have opened a new bag of compost and had a fair bit of that myself...seems to work well. I suppose it may break down through the summer but it certainly works to start with.. RF

This made me laugh and perhaps he did have a point. I usually put the lumps into the compost bin but what Jim says is indeed a good idea Rosefriend. I do like Beechgrove and it'll be interesting to see how their trial this year with the throw and grow seeds goes. Some of them are very expensive and I do wonder just how successful they're going to be. The miracle grow flower magic bottle costs around £8.

I also noted on Beechgrove this week that the lady gardener was using Fireworks dahlias in one of the hanging baskets, saying they are a dwarf variety which only grow to about 10" .... someone come and have a word with mine then, they are already over a foot tall!

I did'nt sow my seeds of Fireworks this year so it'll be interesting to see how yours and whoever else grows them find them. What are you feeding yours, steroids? I did note that she was growing them this year.

They are all in bud!! In the front bedroom, still in 3" square pots and haven't had a drop of food, just tap water! Triffids At least I will know what mix of colour they are before I put them out, so they may not clash with their planting companions

I quite enjoyed the allotment challenge, can't believe it's over now but they all did well.
No GW next friday as Chelsea is on all week and. I was surprised to see MD only putting his sweetpea outside now. Some of mine are flowering and others have buds on. Still his did look healthy and they'll no doubt do well when they do flower.

I just leave mine in and they grow and multiply like mad. They flower off and on all year too, we must have exactly the right conditions for them. Perhaps when I get old I'll just have a garden full of primulas, ferns and montbretia.... simples

Did anyone see Gardeners world on Friday, especially the bit about Glyndebourne with Joe Swift ? Well the head gardener there, Kevin Martin, is a very good friend of mine and he's just given me a 12' x 10' greenhouse for my allotment. It's not what you know..................

I enjoyed MD and Beechgrove this week - only found out at the last minute that it was on Saturday and not today but we ate breakfast in the Lounge whilst watching the TV... I rather like the Celmisia Spectabilis that they showed at Beechgrove - I wonder if it would stand our temps - if it is happy in Scotland and the mountains of Mew Zealand then it might have a chance here...??!! www.aberdeengardening.co.uk/diary/2011/01/celmisia-spectabilis/RF

I've not watched it yet Rosefriend but will catch up later on. I did google the Daisy but I don't know how hardy it would be. Still as you say, if they can grow it in New Zealand and Scotland I'd reckon it must be hardy so long as it did'nt sit in wet all winter.

The repeat of the friday show is shown on the sunday 29th 07.45hrs here in the Uk I don't get Beechgrove when it goes out on a thursday, it goes out on thursdays on bbc Scotland I think and I don't get that channel so have to record or watch it on the Sunday morning. I don't see it advertised for the sunday so perhaps it's not on.

Just watched Monty and Beechgrove and Monty did it again - what to me was a load of twaddle..
He was going on about S & S and that it was good to get the environment working - bring in the birds and pond life, if you can have a pond and Yes I totally agree but to say that S & S only go for ill, stressed plants and that they leave top healthy plants alone is a load of rubbish!!
I can just imagine the scenario - a new to the scene gardener goes to a GC and says that she will buy a wonderful Hosta as it is soooo healthy and vigorous and Monty Don said that it would never be eaten by slugs...it would bring any gardener out in a sweat!!
