The Beechgrove Garden will air from 2 April on BBC Scotland, weekly until 15 October, with a repeat in the rest of the UK on BBC network television on Sundays from 5 April in an unconfirmed early-morning slot. Things usually start a bit later up in Scotland Rosefriend.

Has anyone been watching Kew on a Plate? It's very good and lovely to see so much of the gardens. It's more a cooking programme with Ramond Blanc but he also shows the veg growing in the gardens. They did show that the Garlic got rust, it happened to me too one year so it's good to see that the professionals can get it too.

I've watched the gardening prog. to win a place at Chelsea, I found it interesting, if a bit silly in parts, someone had 5 plants to put in in 3 hours and was panicking. and the amount of money they were given seemed a lot to me but, all in all I enjoyed it, and I'm glad Sean won, I liked his gardens the most right through the week.

Me too Barbara - I've enjoyed it, quite funny at times watching them try to turn their designs on paper into 'safe' spaces! Couldn't believe Paul hadn't thought about the stability of those concrete posts just plonked on his wall! Sean really seemed passionate about his gardens, like each of them was a piece of him.

I loved the fact that he embarrassed his wife by going on about her 50th birthday. I expect that Chelsea coverage will begin at the weekend.I hope Sean's garden is featured.

Did anyone see the double Auricula's on Beechgrove Tig, Ladygardener, owdboggy - gorgeous.. I also watched BBC1 Chelsea just now - damn Monty and that jacket....a tramp would look better....some of the gardens we saw were great...went to the loo, came back to hear my OH saying the equivalent of "load of crap" but as I walked in the lounge they had changed to another garden.. What does anyone think of Sean's garden??

Fuchsia I thought she was going to thump him I was surprised it was a 'display' garden and wouldn't be judged. Thought it was a bit grey due to all the slate he'd used, although it probably would work OK as an urban front garden with parking. Not sure if the camera angles did it justice, might get a different view of it during next weeks programmes. I doubt I could have done any better mind you, in the time available. I loved the mans passion for his auriculas (especially trying to breed the doubles to stay in upright clusters of flower). Good to know he was the one who grew Blackjack, so many sold!!! Watching Beechgrove the time seems to just fly by, it is over before I'm ready!

I've not seen Beechgrove this week but have seen some of GW. I enjoyed the Chelsea run up programme where they all had different designs each night. I too was glad that Sean won, he's certainly passionate about his plants. Hope he gets lots of work through being on the show and being at Chelsea. His garden 'tho for Chelsea was a bit bland for me. I loved the stones but felt it could do with more colour.Fair play to him 'tho. Ladygardener, Barbara, Tig, Fuchsia, Rosefriend,

I'm enjoying seeing the gardens on the BBC coverage but wish they would spend a bit more time on each garden although I did check out some of the RHS peoples award gardens. Still not information about the planting but I do love some of the elements in Chris Beardshaws Healthy Cities Garden and Jo Thompsons retreat garden for M&G

I've thought the same LG, just snapshots & overviews rather than in depth reports. I'm hoping for more detailed information during the week.

Well don't hold your breath Tig. I can't help thinking that if the BBC spent less money travelling to the middle east and other far away countries they might have more time talking about the actual planting...... Some folk are very disappointed at their medals I see, I guess it's always the way is'nt it. So many of the winners have very few flowers in their gardens, it's all about green and the structure and architectural elements now.

According to James Alexander Sinclair the gardens are mainly judged against the written brief that was originally submitted by the designers, so if the garden achieves what the brief specified, the plants are all in good condition & the quality of the build is of a good, safe standard then they should get Gold. I suppose what a designer might write months ahead of the show can vary significantly to what they can achieve once construction begins, particularly in the larger show gardens. The weather this year may have left a few of them with less quality plants to choose from.
It was a complete waste of money going out to Dubai, but I did wonder if the BBC paid, or the trip was 'sponsored' by the garden designer who was obviously from a very wealthy family.

Well I've watched all the coverage apart from yesterday afternoons and I've still managed to see more of the actual gardens on the RHS website I agree with you Ladygardener, there are so many gardens this year with hardly any flowers in them, I love the L'Occitane garden & also the Homebase one, probably because they've got more flowers than hard landscape in them. Not sure about the Chatsworth garden being best in show... it's a very nice collection of rocks & I can see all the work involved, but I'm a bit about it.

Tig, yes I know what you mean and although it was lovely to see Dubai, I did wonder about including it into the Chelsea coverage. Jilly no matter how nice a design is, I too like to see flowers in a garden. Those rocks were magnificant but they definately could'nt be transferred to a normal garden despite what they keep saying about taking a bit of chelsea home with you. I've found the coverage very repetative as well. Exactly the same clips being shown on different shows..... Having said all that I do still like to watch it. I thought the sweetpea man might have given us some tips instead of just the history of how they came to be, that's the kind of thing I'd like to see.

You're dead right there Tig, But, I think they are spending more time arguing about the judging then showing us the gardens and the flowers in the pavillion. I wonder who did pay for the advert for Islam. Not sure I could eat purple spuds though.

Anyone else think that Monty really isn't best suited to Chelsea? I know poor old Monty I know it's his own fault for agreeing to do it (& he's probably got paid £££) but I do feel quite sorry for him, he's said so many times in the past that he considers things like Chelsea pretentious & not about real gardeners, that's it's hard to believe that he's had a sudden change of heart. He doesn't do 'banter' at all though, bless him, OH said last night that if he had to spend an hour pretending to find Jo Swift amusing he'd look b****y miserable too

Rosefriend, thanks for the heads up, I did'nt know it was on. I've set the tv to record now. I'm finding GW a bit boring this year but do enjoy the way the folk in beechgrove chat to each other. I think GW is too bitty, perhaps if it was longer......

Olaf is very disappointed - he used to watch the gardening programmes when he worked in the UK and he had some choice words to say about Monty and his dawg..mind you I like Nigel!! Beechgrove is great - I never fail to learn something...

Yes Monty would drive me bonkers too Rosefriend but if the programme was longer perhaps we could see more of Carol and her lovely garden..... Nigel is lovely but I don't need or want to see him every week.

I didn't think Beechgrove was as good when they covered the Scottish equivalent of Chelsea. The presenters all appeared a bit wooden, I did wonder if it was because the standard of entries was not 'stunning' due to the weather conditions we've had, or just that they were out of their usual comfort zone. Back at Beechgrove I always enjoy the programme, the 30 minutes flies by, always wanting more. GW has got 'old hat', the piece they've had Joe doing on hanging baskets, week after week? They have cut Carols input, and Rachel I find boring. Monty has a monotonous voice, he never sounds enthused.

I'm afraid with GW I just aim to be eating dinner at 8.30 so then we watch it, but if we're not & are doing something else I always say I'll catch it on the i-player, then half the time don't bother. I'm with Tig, what is it with giving Joe Swift a weekly spot on hanging baskets, which just seems to consist of saying time & time again, did you know you can grow anything in baskets not just multi coloured bedding, well no s**t Sherlock as we say in these parts . I've worked out why they have Nigel in every program though, when he's talking to him, it's the only time Monty shows any personality, I do love him though (Nigel that is)

I must admit I didn't even bother with GW last night, might catch it on the i-player if I'm bored . I'm a bit bored with it this year too, I agree with you Tig, what's the point of giving Joe Swift a weekly spot on hanging baskets (when he admits he doesn't like them), it just seems to be repeating time & time again, did you know you can grow anything in a basket not just bedding..... well no s**t Sherlock as we say in these parts I do love Nigel though & I can see why they have him every week, talking to him is the only time Monty seems to show any warmth & personality.

Has anyone been catching up with Hampton Court Flower Show in the evenings on BBC? I've quite enjoyed it, the man on last night (forget his name but he lives in the south east ) seems to have a lovely hardy nursery. The only thing is that it's introduced by MD.. and Jo is there too.
