I thought Chatsworth looked good on GW last night, I've been there many many times, it's such a lovely place, I seem to remember the fountain is the highest in England, and they have steps that water flows down that plays musical notes due to the way they are spaced or something like that, we tried to get tickets to the RHS show but there was very limited availability, so we couldn't get a day when we weren't bowling in the evening, so it would have been a mad rush. Oh dear - I don't know whether I shall watch it tomorrow...all I will do is cry.... Mum, Dad and my sister and I, later Hans included spent many happy hours there...now they are all gone...

No need Barbara, - it's nature's way - still frightens me that I am the only one left though... Well I watched it and had a few tears but I am very pleased that I saw it all and let's face it, it will probably be the only way that I will ever see the RHS Chatsworth Show!! Bet the entrance fee is a wopper!! That small tomato that they showed at Chatsworth is called Curley Kaley. I grew it last year - slowest growing tomato I have ever grown, tasteless fruit but decorative... Also makes me laugh the way Jim does his toms - do you know how easy it is to snap the top off a tomato plant using that method....I do and use canes instead, hahahahaha!! It is true that toms do not like it very hot, the flowers tend to drop but I wouldn't spray the tomatoes unless you know that they are going to dry very quickly - ideal for fungus problems and if blight spores are about....mmmmh, need I say more...

It was either £31.00 or £37.00 Rosefriend, I cant remember exactly, we discussed Tatton is £27.00 so I think we can watch them on TV and spend the money on some plants this year for a change, after all we have done Tatton 4 times now.

Pretty hefty isn't it - I know they have to get their money back but how does a family of 4 people afford prices like that! 25/27 Pounds seems fair to me and yes you can buy some good plants for that money...

I thought exactly the same re hosing the toms RF - asking for trouble with blight! I meant to have a look at the Beechgrove page on FB to see if anyone else had commented similarly, but forgot I'm with you Barbara, a lot of money to spend when you can see most of it on TV - and then there were the traffic jams! There is a plant fair on today at a stately pile not that far from us, the entry fee is £3 ... more within my price bracket, even then I'm thinking that I could buy a plant instead

Rosefriend, Barbara, Tig, Auricula, Ladygardener, Dutchy, Sooo who is right about the Bearded Irises then?? Monty says that the rhizome must be half out of the soil, rhizome pointing into the sun, leaves cut back and Chris B covered the rhizome up totally and just tied back the leaves with a cane....

Post by Barbara on Aug 6, 2017 7:53:21 GMT
When I left the rhizomes above ground the S n S ate them.

Mine flower when above soil and not when below. It could be the soil type. Monty is on clay like me and Chris is not, isn't he?
The wet winter rots them when they sit deep and you do not see that until it is too late. The bearded Iris growers out here all plant with the tubers in the sun.
The reason mine were not so full this year is... wellll S&S what else... They bit through the flower stems which probably are very tasty.

I think both are right, as the advice from Chris was regarding dividing and potting up new tubers, planting in a pot below ground helps them to root quicker and anchor themselves, and not rock about in the pot, but when planted out I would always scrape any soil back and have the tubers half above ground, getting as much sunshine as possible, they produce more flower spikes that way.

How far into the year can one replant Bearded Iris? I just found that my dark yellow ones are absolutely in the wrong spot. Go for it Dutchy, it was only a week or so back that they were doing them on GW & Beechgrove, so I reckon they'll be OK moved now, if you get a decent bit of soil with them they probably won't notice they move anyway. Jasmine if you watch Beechgrove on Sunday morning, right at the end of the visit to the ladies garden in Shetland she had a solution to rabbits eating her beloved plants! OH was chuntering away about something behind me and I missed what she said but it was sand which was soaked with something, see if you can catch it. There is a new gardening programme on More4 starting next Monday (19th August) at 9pm. It is called All Gardens Great and Small, this is the write-up New series. Plantswoman Dee Hart Dyke travels around Britain meeting people opening their gardens to visitors through the National Garden Scheme, as well as trying to convert her daughter Miranda Hart to the joys of gardening. In the first episode, Dee meets a woman who is preparing to open her small urban garden for the very first time, while Julian Clary shows her around the Kent garden he has lovingly restored. Narrated by Miranda Hart

Miranda Hart's cousin, Tom Hart Dyke had a series of programmes a few years ago, about his "world garden" in Kent. He's the one who was kidnapped in South America. I like Miranda and Julian so I'll give it a go...... you should have applied Geranium

What did you think of it Barbara? I enjoyed it, mostly Shame some things weren't explained a bit better, and a few bits of misinformation I thought (like showing Julians lupins rather than peonies! Some of the gardens were interesting, not so much watching Dee playing piano while Julian warbled Noel Cowards Don't Put Your Daughter on the Stage! I will watch the next episode though.
