I can't imagine deer or rabbits wanting your bird feeder, Jas, but a fox? Possibly. Guess what - it's been snowing here, and it's started again, so we might be joining the rest of the country in being 'white'. I'll have to add more food to the feeders - I think it's all gone since I put it out earlier.

Maybe someone else has lots of food out Missy you never know. I have just updated the antics of the birds on my garden thread if anyone would care to look. I have been out and refilled all the feeders this morning and both my cats are curled up in the living room not wanting to go out today, I better go and collect the hen eggs before they freeze which 2 did on Sunday morning.

Not heard about hanging chicken carcasses in trees before, has anyone tried this Which birds would eat it ? It seems a bit bird-cannibalistic ! I'd be a bit worried about attracting rats, i know Geraniums rats would have a field day !

I love your pictures, Jilly I can see the robin perfectly well and your starlings will be too fat to fly at this rate ;D I like collard doves too, two of mine were 'got' by a sparrowhawk recently

It's great that so many people feed the birds, I notice the neighbours are feeding them too now we have this cold weather. Well done indeed for getting your pics Louisa, I love little robin's and enjoy the antics of all the little birds.

I certainly couldn't hang chicken carcases out - Louisa's right, the rats might well be straight back - that's if the last lot of bait hasn't 'dealt' with rat no. 3. We've had 'Ratty' and 'Batty' the twins, and 'Fatty' their larger relative in the last few weeks, all guzzling every scrap of bird food I put out.

Get the council out to them Geranium, they put down very strong bait and for free up here .
the birds are struggling to find water at the mo. as soon as I put a dish out it freezes over.

Thanks - we hope they're 'dealt with' but if I see any more, I will try - there are financial troubles in Somerset, though - lots of deep budget cuts. Poor birds - I just hope they can drink from our stream.

Poor you Geranium, rats can be a problem I know. I have bait down most of the time which the council supply. I have chickens and two small holdings in close proximatey to my back garden so it's par for the course. Thankfully the bait keeps them at bay although I do see one or two every now and again. As far as feeding the wild birds I make sure that I only put out enough food for the birds and there is no excess left by the end of the day. The chicken carcass has survived so far from rat, fox or cat attack i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/grin.gif It is halfway up my garden hanging just below one of my feeders. I've sprinkled some seed inside the carcass as a way to encourage birds. I reckon it will probably be starlings and tits that will eat it. I've spotted a couple of sparrows and a robin purched on it so far. My worst worry is it may encourage a family of jackdaws to visit more regularly, they look like they might eat meat i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/grin.gif

Something from the RSPB site ......
The window feeders that you stick onto house windows are being discouraged for a couple of reasons.
1) The birds often fly into the glass 2) They see their reflection and are frightened or get agressive towards it 3) There is too much movement in the room and they're frightened away again.
The first 2 hadn't dawned on me but they're interesting points, i thought.

Thanks everyone for the noms I just love to sit or stand in the living room looking through the window at all the birds I have just seen a blackbird almost hidden by the snow as its got a little too deep for him but he is busy digging below the fatball feeder to see if anything has fallen off it. ;D

Thanks Chuckles - I'm certain that our Council charges for getting rid of rats, so we'll just have to keep the trap baited. Ratty, Batty and Fatty haven't been seen for several days, than goodness! ;D ;D
