I know we have a few threads about current stories but perhaps this would focus some discussions.
I'm not a one for reading newspapers but I have Radio 4 on quite a bit, I use the internet and I try to make sure I watch the BBC News once a day.
Sad to start this thread with bad news but the Marines being killed has knocked me this morning. First I had huge sorrow for the families and my own worries for my daughter coming forth.
Then I felt an anger. Yes, that these Marines were yet more additions to the death toll but why the hell does this supposed religious nation allow someone to send a 13 year old boy to kill or be killed?? That to me is beyond comprehension. Religious fervour has got to be one of the largest murdering machines known and made by man.

I think that Religion, not money, is the root of all evil

I think religion or creed or ethnicity are the things which divide humans. But we are by nature tribal so whether it's religion, money, boundaries or property we will always be in dispute with others I'm afraid.
Amo, I thought of you this morning when I heard about those Marines, knowing that your daughter's going out there soon. Not being a mother i can't say I know how you will feel when she's out there but to imagine it makes me go cold.

Thank you for thinking of me Ruthie, it's much appreciated. I also noticed today that it was the last day of Carol Voderman on Countdown, least she might shut up now, and also the coldest start to winter for 30 years. I didn't think winter started for another week yet but I get thier snow drift.

The young lad finished his walk around the UK yesterday with his dog. He did the walk after a prank went wrong and ended up in the rescue teams being called out to save him and his friends.
What I want to know is, how does he now explain things to his dog Flash every morning when his walkies are not going to be quite as long? ;D

Why is there never any good news any more ? It's always doom & gloom these days.
I actually try to avoid the news a lot of the time these days because it just makes me feel depressed. I do listen to 5live quite a bit though.

I agree FA - our local news always used to try and end on a positive note - but it seems more and more gloomy these days Although I can usually find something somewhere to make me smile - and I don't have the telly on too much! They are too selective on the negative and not focused on the good these days - perhaps we should start a 'Good News' campaign ;D x Tig

It seems a lot of us are not watching The News anymore - I would rather listen to the News on Radio 4 and in bed at night think called The World today Just to see all the gloom and doom is very depressing - they should have some happy stories too at the end of the programme - even the newspapers are full of doom & gloom and I hate to see the full page spreads in the Daily Mail about animal cruelty One reason I stopped taking it I get The Times on a Friday and that's about it ;D Good idea about the Good News Thread Tiggy

This website, www.optimistworld.com, only tells positive news and on its homepage it says 'News, but sunnyside up'. Some lucky chap in Lincoln found £10,000 chopped up in a bin and he has been told he can keep all the money and exchange it for new notes. What a great Christmas present for him!

Huge, huge, huge thoughts to those in Australia. Not something that is within the bounds of imagination.

You're right Amo. When you think of how many people have died and what they must have gone through, and those whose homes have been completely destroyed and have lost everything, it puts life into perspective a little doesn't it. Lets hope they can bring the fires under control without further loss of life.

Yes it's certainly a shocking state of affairs in Australia at the moment particularly as it turns out that some of the fires were started deliberately. My cousin and her family live north of Sydney and though they have not been affected by the fires it has been extremely hot there too so we are keeping our fingers crossed that nothing kicks off there.
I had to visit the podiatry clinic this morning and the podiatrist, who happened to be Australian, said that she had family in the Melbourne area but mercifully they were all ok.
We think we have problems with a bit of snow but it's nothing to what those poor people are having to contend with down under, and I just hope that the weather changes soon so that they can get the fires under control.

I saw on the news today about the lad aged 13 who has just become a Dad He barely looks older than about 9! The mother is reported to be 15........ I feel sorry for the poor baby...what sort of life will it have? The parents are still babies themselves. I haven't heard the whole story just caught the tail end of it on the news.

I heard that he was 12!!! A year doesn't make much difference and I'm afraid I don't feel sorry for the lad at all. I feel sorry for the girl he got pregnant, and most of all I feel sorry for her parents because they will no doubt ending up for the poor little baby.
My friend pointed out that he was probably too shy to go and buy condoms. He wasn't too shy to use his whatsit though!!!

Love her or loathe her, Jade Goody is the mother of 2 young boys aged 4 & 5 who are going to be left without their mum in possibly a few short weeks, but no more than a few months.
I don't particularly like her and I don't like the way she has made millions from basically celebrating the fact that she's pig ignorant (a real shining example of modern education in Britain) but I feel sorry for her and her children. I wouldn't wish what she's going through on anybody.
The only "good" to come out of this is that she's used her illness to raise the profile of regular smear tests for young women. Lets hope that will save lives if people get it diagnosed earlier.

That poor bloody baby. What sort of life is it going to have especially with a mother like that and god knows how many chavs claiming to be its father. As for Jade Goody, i feel so desperately sorry for her and her family. It makes me cry to think that her two boys will grow up without a mum because of this awful disease.
