Aaaahhhhhh a plan Ron , - I am with you now - hahahahaha!!!! Good idea actually - they will be strengthened a lot. What size pots are these going into?? 2 round pots, internal 21" diameter by 16" high and 1 square pot 17" side by 16" high.

Another delay, unfortunately. The tubes I've rescued from the old mini greenhouse are very thin, less than 1mm thick. I've tried using a hacksaw and it just won't cut it. Its so thin that the blade has nothing to grip onto. I can get blades for my jigsaw which are designed to cut steel less than 1mm thick but the common outlets don't stock them so I've had to order from a specialist. 3 to 5 days delivery, so I'll just have to wait. By the way, bagpuss, hope you don't mind me pinching your thread!

Just goes to show what rubbish these mini greenhouses are. The steel for the tubes is so thin that you can't get a blade to cut it from a general stockist, a DIYer wouldn't use the stuff. Its no wonder they get blown aroung when its windy and won't take any weight.

Well, it's a shame when practicalities start intruding into best laid plans, isn't it. I've had to accept that putting a bend into the obelisk with wood of the thickness I'm using just will not work. I'm going to have to just use straight sides, an upside down version of a conventional obelisk. It does mean though that I shouldn't need the pieces across the middle that might have got in the way of the plant as there won't be the same stress on the joints. Simply attaching the rings should work. I might actually make some progress now.

Another delay, what a surprise. As I'm just using the rings, I need thin short screws (3 x 30mm) and I don't have any. Gave me the opportunity to buy a couple of other things I wanted though, some rasp attachments for the drill which allow you to cut grooves into wood, and an angled chuck that goes into your drill's chuck and enables you to screw in at 90 degrees. Both will come in handy with this job. All from Toolstation, £15, post free, coming Monday.

Rained all morning but made a start this afternoon. It's gone black again now so I've come inside for a coffee and see how it goes.

Went back out and it rained again so giving up for today. Two good days forecast next if it doesn't change again. Managed to get a bit done. Two more rings to go on and pins for support.

Be happy you haven't got our weather - it is snowing already here Ron ,.... How high will it be in the end?? Snow? No, no, no, please, don't send it over here, Rosefriend! The height will be about six feet, as its for honeysuckle I didn't want it any smaller. It will be twenty inches across at the top. It'll look quite big when its in a pot but its reasonably slim profile should help.

Been out to continue the job but couldn't put up with the cold wind, started getting cranky! Forecast wet afternoon and looks like Rosefriend 's snow is coming overnight tomorrow. (Thank you!) Another delay, I think ...

As you like sharing, Rosefriend, I sincerely hope you get some warm, sunny weather soon ... It is cold but what made me cranky was the wind. All the stuff I needed that I'd got carefully set out and at hand was getting blown about, I ended up chasing the paper that I'd printed my plan on! It had the measurements for where I needed to drill guide holes in the rings, couldn't afford to lose it.
