The cuckoo's were early here last year, can't quite remember when, but there was a huge fuss about it in the pub. They were saying there were here early because they wouldn't like the summer, I guess they were right too.

;D Nope. But then where I live is not cuckoo land. They prefer an area much more varied with more shrubs and more ditches with warblers breeding in the reeds. There are cuckoo in the neigbouring village but I am not so much out there. Besides cuckoo only sing when there is rain coming. So to be honest I don't want to hear them right now ;D

Is it the fact that it starts singing here in April and we all know about april showers? My wife's in Amsterdam atm, at an exhibition for her work. She went there yesterday and back tomorrow. How's the weather?

Madon The weather is fab so your wife will have a good stay. But by now you probably know that already. About the area. We have mostly flat fields and hardly any birds nesting that the Cuckoo uses for hosting its young. Out here reed warblers are usually the poor victim of having to raise a cuckoo baby.
And I still have not heard one sing.

Well I hadnt seen MOI birdies for ages and wondered if they had fled MOI box on MOI LAND - but no they are late risers - I saw them fluffing out their feathers about 8am gathering moss and stuff
I thought last night when it was lashing down with rain and blowing a gale that I hoped they were all snug and warm in MOI Birdbox on MOI LAND ;D

All the corvids will eat other baby birds Jenny. I'm waging war with a pair of Jackdaws trying to nest in our redundant chimney at the moment. I don't want them anywhere near my song birds!!

We haven't heard a Cuckoo yet. Can't remember hearing one last year (though I was in Normandy last April and on our walks we had a Cuckoo calling incessantly). Earliest we've heard one here in Norfolk was 18th April one year (can't remember when) but we always used to bank on hearing them by St George's day. Nothing this year, I think they've abandoned ue............great news for the garden birds though.

I have not heard a Cockoo around here for over 10 years +. Took a pic of our Lesser Spotted Woody , it was in the garden eating the fat balls and it comes back each night to see what is left. Its the first year we have seen him in the garden but we hear him tapping away in the wood.

Opened the curtains this morning and saw loads of house martins exploring the neighbours eaves. So they're back. I hope the pair come back to our nest too.
