this cold snap has made most of my plants wilt, including my two scented geraniums and my giant walking stick cabbages. but other things seem to be just about surviving, like some suculents I planted in a sheltered spot and a passionflower in an old welington boot (very new small plant) I totaly wasn't prepared for this weather but I would love to save what I can. but is it safe to bring things straight from outside into a warm (not hot) house? p.s. I don't have a greenhouse since the wind mangled my tent-style one

I'd have thought that succulents would be much happier in the house, to be honest. Try bringing the geraniums in, too. Good luck!

Hi Flup welcome to the Board One of my neighbours has covered most of his shrubs with plastic sheeting and tied them down with string Alan T says not to do this as the plants will sweat, cant breathe, and then die I cant tell him - it will be shoot the messenger Apart from anything else his garden looks a total eyesore - all these huge white bags covering the shrubs - very ghostly at night I can tell you

I went to a national trust garden a few weeks ago and they covered some of their plants in hessian sacking. might be an idea for the unmoveable things but I am going to bring any survivors into the hall today.our 111 year old house doesn't have very good heating anyway

Here in Germany I tend to work with fleece - my standard roses are covered up in fleece and my bush roses are all mounded up. I also cover things that are a bit sensitive with fir tree branches etc and I love it when it snows as snow does make a lovely warm blanket for plants.
Last year I lost some perennials but I think it was more the fact that we had nearly 3 months of snow and sub zero temperatures and things either rotted or they died because I couldn't water them.

I've got white mounds of fleeced plants/shrubs all round the garden, Rf. The dog ignores them now - when I first did it, he barked at them! ;D

Yes I bet - I have reduced my standard roses but the garden used to look like a lollipop garden in the winter!!!

BLIMEY! the snow is comming down thick and fast now not such good news for the plants though. will just have to wait and see if anything outside survives when the snow thaws. just froze my fingers off looking for anything salvigable and everything was caked in the snow but I found a nice suprise lurking in the unused windowbox of my shed. a peice of suculent I forgot to pick up has made a load of new little plants wich have been duly rescued from the weather and are sitting on my (cool) windowsil trying not to warm up to fast. there is loads! I'm surprised they grew at all because the box was under shelter, never got rained on or watered, and it's questionable weather it is even real soil or just dusty rubishy builders remains. If I can find out how to post a picture I will do.

Hi there Flup and welcome. Hope you don't mind your name being shortened, we all tend to do it Glad to see you are finding your way about the board i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/cool.gif I don't tend to cover anything thats in the garden thats planted in the ground. I do move some of my pots to a more sheltered place, like the side of the shed or greenhouse. Anything vaguely tender I put in the GH, it's unheated but I do insulate it slightly, small pots get wrapped in bubble wrap. What I do watch out for though are branches that get laidened with snow and start to bow down, I gently knock the snow off to prevent them snapping. If the hall isn't too hot it would be a great place, anywhere as long as it's frost free really. Warmth might encourage the plants to start growing at the wrong time of year.

This is what I do to post a photo.
1. Google 'Tinypic'. Click on that. 2. Click 'browse' and choose your photo from your files. 3. Where it says 'resize' - choose 'message board' 4. Click 'upload' 5. A box will come up with a code to copy.^. 6. Wait for a new page - point your cursor at the code for message boards and left click 7. Go to where you want to post the photo (that should have been open waiting) 8. Right click in the box, and the code will appear. 9. type in your text under or over the code. 10. Click 'post reply' and hope it all works!
Good luck. ;D

LOL - think that applies to a lot of us Flub...well done on posting the pic.
Do you now like Courgettes or have you gone off them totally!!??
Another trick I use in the GH's (little ones) is to buy polystyrene slabs and cover then in plastic (bags) and then put the tubs on them. I have also got some to go around the GH's and one for the door, in the hope that not too much wind goes through.

Hi Flup & I grew Parsnips this year for the first time & they were really easy (with a lot of help from the folks on here) as I don't usually grow much veg. If you like garlic thats really easy & can be planted in pots now or in the ground once it's thawed. Well done on posting the pic, it took me weeks (& a technically minded OH) to manage that. Now you can do it have a look at the my garden/allotment threads because we're all terribly interested (nosy i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif ) in looking at each others gardens.
