Years ago I stopped having Dahlia's in the garden as I was fed up of them being full of earwigs, decimated by slugs all the time and having to plant/dig them up each year. However abut three years ago I was given a couple and since then I have bought a few/sown a few myself. When I sorted the cellar out I found that I had lost about 5 small dahlia's over winter and although I still have another 4/5 tubers I decided to just have a look whilst we were in a GC today.... I wasn't going to buy any, of course, but....these sort of fell into the trolley. First of all a pack of 5 redleaved Dahlia's...the tubers look good and healthy. My OH started to walk away - he was under the impression they were enough....huh.. I got 3 Top Mix - 30/40cms 1 x Lolo - 30/40cms redleaved 1 x Que Sera - 60/80cms 1 x Edge of Joy - 60/80cms 1 x Marble ball - 40-60cms 1 x gallery Art Deco - 30/40cms and just my arms length away as OH grabbed my arm... was Bishop of Llandaff - 60/80 redleaved So that's 14 new Dahlia's plus the ones in the cellar and a few seeds as well!! Anyone else succumbed this year?? RF

It's a tall one - up to 2m I think. Isn't it a smasher! In the catalogue it says that every bloom is different.

Lovely selection RF - especailly Que Sera and Edge of Joy. Rebecca's World is stunning Geranium. I've got a few that I left in the ground over winter - don't know if they'll be ok but I've never managed to keep them over winter in the shed without them going mouldy i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/sad.gif There's Ambition, Con Amore, Hillcrest Royal, Imperial Palace, Vicky Crutchfield and Thomas Edison.

They look great RF........I cant decide which I like the best......errrrr......all of them ;D I left mine in the ground last year but I think that they may not have survived as I pulled one up today by accident and it was a soggy lump Mine went mouldy last year too when I dug them up. I might sow a few again this year.

Those are all wonderful Dahalia. There are some amazing colours now are'nt there.I bought 5 Topmix and 1 vuurvogel yesterday. I'm hoping some of my Bishops Children will come back up this year although I've got to keep everything crossed for them. The ones in the pots are mush. I've sowed some Dwarf Bordr Mix and Bishops Children the other day. I thought I had a couple of Collerette Dandy seeds but I must have used them up.

I have to say I did think that it was a very tall one but as I am no Dahlia experts I didn't think anything of it....1.2m sounds a lot better - hehe!!

Exactly - the heads would be so heavy - after a good downpour it would be flattened. Mind you roses can be like that as well.

Very nice RF. i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif I suspect that I have probably lost another swathe of left in the ground dahlias this winter but at least it makes way for new ones from this seed this year. I am hoping that my pot-grown and now ten year old Bishop of Llandaff will be ok as it's in the GH but otherwise I would like to try the follow on variety Bishop's Children as I have heard good reviews about them.

Do you treat them like annuals, then, or do they develop tubers?

Sorry to butt in & hijack a question meant for Missy, Geramium but this is a tuber of Dahlia coccinea that I grew from seed it had been in the ground about 4 years before I managed to get it out this Spring. I absolutely love all the different ones mentioned on here, but I'm a bit scared of dahlias now, apart from the Bishops I grow safely in pots i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/grin.gif Jillyx

Jilly, that's a monster. What were you feeding it, small animals? ;D I know they can grow quite big even in an ordinary border as I had to take one out that I'd grown from seed and was a couple of years old last year. It too was really big, tubers everywhere.
