hargh don't even think of it. Dahlia should be planted after the Ice saints in half May. OK you might get away with first of May being in warmer climes.
Weeds are nature's revolution against the government of the gardener.
You could leave them in their bags, but you could get a bit of a head start if you pot them up and keep them frost free. If you give them a bit of bottom heat, you will find they will start to sprout and be a reasonable sized plant when put in their final position c. end of May. You could of course take a few cuttings and increase your stock
Finaly got around to pricking out the first of my Bishops Children into individual pots, got about 12 & there are another 10 or so still in the seed pot, growing on a bit.
I hope so LG, I think I'm going to put the Bishops Children in a fancy pots this year and take a tip from Cheery & plant last years (if they come back) in big plain pots & dot them in the borders later on in the Summer. When I potted them up in the Autumn they'd made such big tubers I'd never fit them all back in the same pot.

Thanks both...I am really chuffed that our little project has worked....it will give me a head start - our growing season is short enough on this side of the water...

Yes the lights are good - I was wondering how the shoots would be - the problem is going to be that I will have to move the pots around so that they all get more/less light now and again. I hope that they don't go leggy....

I don't have any room on the windowsills - everyone is packed solid with other plants and seeds so I am not sure what to do really. I am hoping that I can get them into the GH soon and wrap them in fleece at night...
I don't really need any cuttings but I am interested as to how it works for me so will certainly do a couple.

My Dahlia tubers are sprouting. These are the ones I bought the first week of Feb. Vuurvogel and some Top Mix from M&S. I'm delighted, i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif being out in the covered back yard has worked for them. Good job too, we had -3 last night and more is forecast I think.

I am just wondering if I can put some of the Dahlia's that are not sprouting into the GH and cover them up - we are in for frosts as well....

I got my replacement 'City of Rotterdam' today - they don't look all that brilliant, but I'll plant them and see what happens. No room for bottom heat - they'll just have to be later than the others.
And the glory of the garden it shall never pass away!
They should be ok, as long as the GH is frost free
Mmmh definitely not frost free - no where apart from the house is and there I have no room left.....right, Plan B - or was it F and G!!
There will come a point where I have no other choice but to get some stuff outside and work with fleece, as usual.

Rf my back yard is covered and the boiler is out there, no chance of them getting frosted in there. They're quite cosy but light will become a problem as they get big. My mini growhouse is not frost free if it gets cold enough.

Hi Amber - I gather you are a dahlia fan/expert. I live just around the corner from the National Collection of dahlias. Their trial and growing beds are a wonder to behold :)The irony is......I can't grow them in the ground as my water table is high and the tubers rot in winter.Winchester Growers ( the collection holders) are on a slight slope and so, don't have this problem Their site overlooks St Michael's Mount and you can visit the collection during summer months.
