Amber, Ladygardener, maggy, Tel, For all you Dahlia lovers and knowledgeable people...I need to know something pretty please.. When I was taking all the Dahlia's out of the tubs yesterday and today I noticed that perhaps over 50% of them had loads of dried and flaky tubers - just the outer skin - not tubers as such. I haven't lost any - there were enough of the tubers left to make a good plant but I don't understand why so many of the older tubers were just flaky and dried out... Of course I forgot to take any pics...sorry!! Rf Nothing to worry about, you will find if you start the season by planting a tuber, during the growing period the plant makes a new tuber in amongst the old one, ready for next year. that is where the new growth will start. you can remove the old stuff, like you say it is just skin. hope that helps. the dahlia's that do that for me are my poms, because I plant the tuber year after year, all my others are grown from cuttings, so they make a tuber the same year, then some of the tubers are used for cuttings the following year. Yes it does help Tel, a lot. I knew that the tuber was OK in that I had enough for a plant next year but I couldn't way up what I had possibly done wrong... I am used to a Dahlia splitting but not "shedding it's skin" !! Many thanks Tel !! I think it was Jilly that posted a link to youtulip.co.uk/news and as I have free postage in Germany I thought I would have a closer look next year...at the moment the links are not all there... RF

That's useful info Rosefriend, Like Tel, I mainly grow from cuttings, so have not experienced the "skin shedding".

Happy New Year to everyone. How time flies ready to set up the pot tubers for cuttings, another season starting.

wendya, I have a few of that variety this year as well. I'd say, pot it up now and leave the stalk part and part of the tuber itself exposed. Water it well to plump up the tuber and get it going and keep it on an inside windowledge or if you have a GH. In no time you'll see sprouts growing up. You're in London so you could most likely get it outside in May. Good luck.

wendya, - I have just copied the pics and put signs on very quickly... Pic 1 - The red bit that says top - that is sticking just out of the ground (the yellow arrows shows a shoot that is already starting) - to the right those are still tubers and will bend into the ground gently... Pic 2 - that is on it's side - the red arrow to the left - that bit is the top and will be just over the soil as well. Everything else are tubers and shouldbe under the surface.. Don't plant too deeply to start with... Hope that helps..

wendya, good advice from Rosefriend and theinsidegardener. Despite you being in London I'd still start your Dahlia off in a pot inside if you can. Just until you get a few green shoots coming up which won't be long because I can see you already have one starting.

Good luck with your Dahlias Wendy I'm sure you love them. For years I've had Dahlias in pots, kept them over winter etc etc but this year I'm trying to cut down on No of pots and watering of pots. So this year I've planted them in my biggest raised veg bed as I had so many and its not being used. Planted them today and chucked some bf&bm on and water them in well.

Chuckles I'm sure your bed will be great. A question, those Dahlia you've planted out, are they growing already. I ask because I'm hardening mine off at the moment about this past week or so and would love to take a chance and get some into the ground.

I ask because I'm hardening mine off at the moment about this past week or so and would love to take a chance and get some into the ground. No they had no growth showing LG. They've been stored dry and soiless in 2 polystyrene boxes with lids all winter, I checked them several times over winter to make sure they were ok and have sat under cover for at least a month with no lid. Tbo I was considering outing them because I would of needed at least 10 x at least 12" pots to grow the in, then I thought just plant them in the unused raised bed and see how they go.

I'm sure they'll do great for you Chuckles. I overwintered some too but started them off a while ago either inside near a window or out back

Sorry Wendy its Blood Fish and Bonemeal Arabian Knight is a lovely Dahlia and a very popular one I'm sure you'll do well with it. I'm quite excited about the Dahlias in the raised bed, I'm sort of hoping as raised beds drain well that I might be able to leave them in over winter

I left a few in a raised bed all winter last year Chuckles, no growth yet but I've had a poke around & the tubers feel nice & firm, so I should think they'll be fine.

I've left some in the ground over the past few years Chuckles and they've survived although they were big to begin with. I'm not sure how the pom pom and other ones will have done this year but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I've most of mine sitting outside now and they're none the worse for wear so far.... I've even planted a few in the ground now too.
