I have had a clump of Day Lilies for years and years in the front garden and this year they have decided not to flower. I know that Day Lilies do not like being re-planted but I wonder if they need splitting after a long time?? If I remember rightly they have probably been there for 15 years at least.

I split mine about every 4 or 5 years RF, so you have done very well! They always do ok when they're moved or replanted - Barbara sent me some off cuts last year and they are fine

Mmmh - must admit to thinking about that as with the winters that we get I wonder if I would be better leaving it until Spring. Having said that we start cutting back for the winter at the beginning of Oct anyway but I expect the first frost in October and even the first snow...might be a risk.

I've had the rampant broad leaved ones with orange flowers, don't know what variety I'm afraid, infact I dug them out a couple of years ago because they were taking over and had got very congested. They got split and I shared some and the rest got put in a black garden trug, they are still in it Have to say they have been really neglected but still flower despite having very little soil and only getting water every now and again, they are up the side of the chicken run out of the way and get forgot. So, I'd say they are tougher than you might think RF. You can get some beauties these days, lots of different colours and sizes. I bought a couple of dwarf ones called 'Stella de Oro' details on here www.shootgardening.co.uk/plant/hemerocallis-stella-de-oro mine are in 5" terracotta pots for the time being sat on the rockery bit of the pond. This is her in the flesh, only one flower so far.

I ( like Chuckles) dug some up to split and replant in spring 2010..........in November 2010 I found the cut pieces, still on the path behind the border, just lying there, no soil or anything I potted 2 up and replanted 2 in the border. The 2 I potted up,I planted out in March........all 4 flowered this year.........they're as tough as old boots, I find ;D

I've bought 3 this year - partly Barbara's fault ;D as hers always look so gorgeous and then it turns out bunnies hate them - they don't even give them an investigatory nibble they hate them so much. I might go over to day lilies and penstemon entirely!

I love Hemerocallis and have loads of buds on mine at the moment. They just need some sunshine to move on a bit. Sounds to me that there will be a few of us starting to grow Astros too after seeing such lovely colours of them. ;D

I split mine up every couple of years, I give away the parts I don't have room for and everyone says they flower well, I always give them a feed when they have buds on. I would love a white one but I've never seen one in the GCs up here and the PnP of the ones I see online would buy me a new frock.

Thanks Jas I'll take you up on that if I don't find one this year.
Auricula white flowers really come into their own at dusk, other colours fade and the whites stand out, so when I used to go out to work it was usually evening time before I got out into the garden , so white was the best shade of flower for my situation, still look lovely in the evening when we sit out.
My only hope LG is they will come back next year stronger, I don't think the bulbs would be eaten do you ?.

I really like white flowers, agree with Barbara that they come into their own at dusk, but they also provide excellent contrast for the more 'colourful' flowers in the border often lifting the darker ones I have had 'problems' with day lilies taking over and had to have a major clear out of some double orange ones which were growing with rampant orange alstroemerias a couple of years ago! There was no chance of other 'weeds' growing in that bed, but the day lilies did stop flowering. I've just had to lift some double pink ones to lower the soil level at the side of the garage, they are in bud, I stuck a fork deep underneath them and lifted the whole clump and put in on a sheet while I dug out the soil beneath, then scattered some chicken manure pellets in the hole and dropped it back in. Watered well and it hasn't batted an eyelid! Well not yet, I only did it over the weekend, with the coolish wet weather we've had I think it will be fine. I've mainly got them in the front garden now which is impoverished, hot and dry. They don't seem to take over under those conditions x Tig

I'm looking forward to something having the opportunity to take over with the amount of rabbits we have now - they must be starving hungry. Noticed a myxi one the other day though so maybe the numbers will reduce - not a nice way for it to happen though

I posted this in Auricula's thread. Like Jasmine, you have converted me, Auricula. I want some day lillies! I've found a specialist supplier, Apple Court, with some rare ones, so I've decided to fill my last 2 remaining pots. Hot Wheels (red), House of Orange, Hyperion (yellow) and Biggie (purple/lavender). They are all tall ones. From what I've read here though, I might be being a bit ambitious planning two to a pot. I take it they take up a fair bit of space. May be better in the ground?

They might be ok in a pot for a year Rony, but I would say that the ground would definitely be better You can get dwarf ones though, they'd be ok in pots
