Borders are lovely. They are so intelligent though you are almost obliged to do obedience or agility training with them to keep them stimulated! And there's doggy dancing too! My friend has a Shetland sheepdog and she can be counted on to bring them a flock of sheep every time they sit down to have a picnic!

Oh jennywren, your affie is lovely. I used to have two, Shah who was the runt of the litter and had every bad feature going, sway back, straight tail, narrow chest etc. etc. etc. but had a lovely personality and lived until he was almost 14yrs old, and his friend Jangie who was a rescue dog and scared of everything because he had been beaten up. He died just 6 yrs. old of a brain tumour caused by the beating. Shah pined so a friend of mine from the rescue offered me another dog, Ben, who needed company because for 6 months he and his litter mates, all 3 of them, had been locked in a chicken coop. His kidneys gave out when he was 7yrs. old and after that I said I'd never have another rescue dog. It was too traumatic. So we now have the cats, rescued, of course. Are we mad or what? Mary

I love all the dogs pictured! ~~Always~~ wanted an Afghan too! It may be 3:00am your time but it is 10:00 PM here and is when I can usually find time to post or just browse the Internet. I won't type loudly so you can all have a restful sleep. Bosco is 11 years old now and a 11 month cancer survivor! (Hemangiosarcoma) I removed his 3.2 pound cancerous spleen last September. I could post a picture of it but will probably get locked in the garden shed and have it sent off a high cliff if I do. LOL! I like this picture of Bosco looming over Giovanni when he was a kitten: When the dogs are raised with any animal they seem to accept them and do well with them, I think. C3D

Hope to see the Pongster on the paws gallery soon toonia Mary bless you for what you did for the Affies but then you can have traumas with dogs not rescued Danny died only 8 of a tumour, one minute he was OK the next in the vets and had to be put down The shock was dreadful I cried all night and all the next day and could not go out of the house for a week Oliver died of old age aged 14 in June this year and another I had some years ago aged 13 Anyone thinking of getting an Afghan think about the grooming - today I got up at 6am as Didi is going on her jolly hols for a week to Wales with her Aunties - this took me over an hour and the night before she had to have a bath She will be going into the sea, rolling in the sand and other unmentionable items she finds so will come back happy but needing a bath and a huge groom out - this will be a 3 hour job You have to keep on top of the grooming otherwise they get matted. They dont have dog hair as such, it is a type of wool but they dont shed hair which is nice They are also not too good with children and dont take kindly to having their tails or ears pulled On Saturday I have a Doberman staying for a sleep over and also a Yorkie and then on Sunday I am judging a beauty contest so this bank holiday weekend is not a holiday for me

This is the neighbour's cat! I don't think the dog and cat need to have been brought up together to get on but the P has always been the archetypal cool guy! All the cats in the village come in and eat his food! Your stories have made me realise he is a walking miracle. He is a rescue dog too, half Griffon Korthals which is a Belgian breed I think, father unknown. he was born in 1990, we don't know when, and when we adopted him in early 1991 the vet estimated he was between 6 months and a year. His present vet says she has never treated a dog that old before but she's doing a good job of keeping him going. He's been a vet's dream all his life, he has more pills and potions in our medicine cupboard than we have. He did have prostate trouble when we lived in town but since we've moved to the country and their are no bitches to come on heat it's gone away. PS wanted to see if the censor would allow the b**tch word in a thread on dogs! Obviously not!

It's a kind thought Jenny, and the way to go for us all! The Pongster is almost totally incontinent now though so another 4 years of that...especially when winter comes and the doors are all closed! Here he is on his "nappy"!

Aw bless little Pongster - this happens to all dog owners Toonia - he looks a happy little thing and not at all old
I have just taken my Auntie's Yorkie for a 5 mile walk up an enormous steep hill - he is 13 - and he virtually ran up it. We had to climb up rocks and boulders - no probs
At the end of it my g.friend and I decided to call in for a nice curry and a couple of beers <BIGsmiley>

Hi, Jenny! Are we really the only two dog lovers on this board? The little black cat came visiting again. The neighbours have been on holiday all week, they refuse to have a cat flap in case all the feral/strays get in and it's been so cold and wet the poor puss has been looking for some comfort -and company. I didn't have much to give her and then I remembered I had some cans of tuna. She tucked in and the Pongster eventually woke up to the fact and went in the kitchen. He stood politely behind her until she finished and then moved in to lick the plate -not that she'd left anything! What a gent! I don't understand how people can be so carelessly cruel -they're not nasty people but they just don't think. How could they go away and not ask someone -me, for example -to feed the cat? She knows where to come at least.

Here is a piccy of the Doberman that had a sleep over last night - she is so strong I could not take her for a walk - she would have pulled me over She chased one of the cats too But apparently if the cat had stopped she would have turned tail and fled - she is such a baby She wouldnt have chased the cat had I not been with her I wanted to post another photo just to prove I can reduce them - <bragbragsmiley>

Yes, lovely Affies. I shall be turning to you when the P finally leaves us, I don't like to think about it but it's better to be prepared. I'm abit scared of Dobermans (Dobermen??) myself and would certainly want to run away if one was chasing me! They've probably just had a bad press. What sort of nature do Affies have? Are they softies?

Affies are not good with children Toonia - they are a very old breed too mainly bred for hunting bears and leopards and dont take kindly to their tails and ears being pulled
You will be very brave when the time comes which could be many years away and yu will find that you dont want your dog to see you upset either
The Doberman looks really fierce but is a huge softie really
Thank you for nice comments CADDD

Just keeping this up to date! We've had to put the heating on now. We delayed it as long as possible as the dry air makes the P huffety puffety which isn't good for his heart. And it brings out more of the pong! Had to close the door too..."I'm not paying these fuel prices to heat the garden..." was heard. But can anyone explain, why do dogs ask to go out just after you've got up, shut the door and sat down again? When it's open he's happy to lie on the sofa all evening but as soon as I close it he wants out every five minutes!

Well done Gardenfrance. Is he French? He needs a baguette, César used to have a squeaky toy one! It isn't his age, Jennywren, he's always been like that! He's happy to stay in the kitchen when I'm in it in case I drop something his way! We had a new kitchen put in and I looked in lots of mags and read about the "perfect triangle" you're supposed to have. you know, the minimum distance between cooker, fridge and sink so you don't have to keep walking across the room all the time. Céz sits right in the middle of the triangle so I have to step over him! I've never spilt anything hot over him yet, my friend says I could use the experience to make an exercise video!

I woke up this morning with the neighbour's cat sitting on my chest purring the Marseillaise. Got up to let her out, and whilst multi tasking (emptying dishwasher and making coffee) I heard a loud scrabbling sound coming from the pantry. I went in and found these two They'd fallen in the bucket ( purple, of course) and couldn't get out. I've released them into the wild, hope they make it, it's a cruel world out there.

Have you got a Mouse problem Toonia? Danny, one of my Afghans, would eat ANYTHING He has eaten a wisteria bush, 1/2 lb butter (very poorly after), tried to eat a brillo pad, but spat it out, ate a large shiny stone (very poorly after) - he would never learn and would grab anything that was on the floor or in my hand Another of my Afghans the total opposite Tempt him with a piece of fillet steak, he would sniff it for ages, turn it round, upside down and then perhaps would eat it How different dogs are not because of their breed but their personalities
