Sweetleaf, to collect kitty urine... when Stripe is in the potty box try slipping a piece of waxed paper or foil under him as he has a pee. The Vet only need a small amount to check a lot of things. The most important is the specific gravity or ability to concentrate urine.
If you have a small ladle or spoon that may help you catch it too. Put the pee in a clean jar or container that has had no medications in it. Tell the vet if you have refrigerated it too prior to your visit. Refrigeration will cause crystals to form that may not normally be present at body temperature.
Best to you and Stripe.

Years ago I bought a little bunny fluppet (very cute hand puppet like sooty but better) for my niece. She never got as I liked it so much I kept it and the OH and I called it Ninja Bunny as we used to make it do ninja moves (ha ha ha). Ninja went on holiday with us to various places and was photographed looking really cool with sunglasses on at various locations round Sicily! (My excuse for this is I never had a teddy bear or cuddly toy when I was little and was therefore deprived!). Sadly, as these things happen, poor Ninja got relegated to sit forever on the bedhead when we got cats! Oh dear, I feel quite guilty about this now. Rhoda

Catquestion: is it right that all ginger cats are toms? Toonia, Not all ginger cats are toms, but I think that the majority of ginger tabby cats are. I have seen a female cat which is the spit of my tom, but I think that they are few and far between. When we took our kittens for their first injections the vet warned us about ginger cats as they do have a reputation for being "a bit eccentric" little did we know what we were in store for. He started by bringing all sorts of things home and I never knew what I would find behind my dining room door when I got home, leaves, food wrappers, children's toys, plastic bags and next doors' T towels, just to name a few. He brought home 2 frozen pork chops in a freezer bag and I found him running up and down the stairs closely followed by his brother and 2 JR's, they took some separating. OH decided he had to find out where they came from, after knocking on a few doors and causing a lot of amusement found that Jinx had sneaked past a sleeping dog and scaled 3 high fences with his prize. Thankfully our neighbours saw the funny side of things.

I do love cats but the only one allowed in is the fluffy Garfield that guards the backdoor. We have two lovely Goldfish. Every morning they greet me hapily wagging their little fins. One is called Taxi as it likes to swim the fasted circle in a bowl ever and bumps the other bigger one called Neo out of the way. Neo is called Neo because the fish before went to the big fishpond in the west ( We use this uphemism in order not to hurt his feelings, fish too have a heart and though the water around makes it hard to see I am quite sure they can cry) <biggrinwinksmiley> Since we want neither to end up as catfood we have no cats..... but we do like them. We're sadly down to our last old boy, two have died in the last few months, we are considering a kitten as he seems so lonely & has taken to sleeping on the top of a high kitchen cupboard, which does seem a bit odd. ( Oh by the way, why is everything on this thread so much wider than all the others,I have to move it around to read all along the line & don@t know if there is a way to shrink it,(I have the same problem with the Vindolanda site but thats all of it) )

I had to take Stripe back to the Vet today hes going to have x-rays to see if we can discover for sure what his problem is, he will have to be sedated for this, (probably the only thing that will prevent the old softy from Purring throughout) I get to pick him up at 6.30, he`ll probably be starving to death by then as he had to go out without his usual breakfast. His appetite is poor, but he eats small amounts in the a.m and I felt really guilty this morning, bundling him into a pet carrier without his brekkie More crossed fingers please?

Hi Sweetleaf - fingers crossed and a big hug for you. Whenever we had to leave the cats at the vet - dentals, ops, test whatever, I would come home and be so stressed I would go into a cleaning frenzy. By the time we got the cat back the kitchen would be spotless!
let us know how things go

Hi, Firstly, hope everything is going okay for you and Stripe Sweetleaf. Everything crossed here too. It's been lovely to see everyone else's cats and I thought I would add mine. I got our cats in 2000, my beautiful dog had died and I didn't want to get another as it was the worst day of my life when he went. Poppy went missing last year for 2 days (got shut in a neighbours shed) and I was frantic.... pets....doesn't matter what they are, you end up loving them equally. So, I thought 2 cats would help. I would rescue one oldie and a kitten. Archie, they said was 3 1/2 had no idea what he was and had been in care for a year!! I think you'll agree, he's a bit special. And Poppy is just a plain tabby. s62.photobucket.com/albums/h99/Skarloey_photos/Cats/

Stripe UpdateThe test have revealed nothing new, his wee was normal and the vet decided to hold off on the x-rays, having examined him thoroughly. He has lost a lot of weight so the vet has given him a steroid injection I must weigh him regularly over the next three weeks, and if he has not put on weight, then the vet will resume testing. He has gone off now to his favourite spot in the garden, after eating his usual tiny amount, but has made a fuss of everyone since he came home.

Don't get me wrong, I like cats. I have owned two cats over the years which I was very fond of. Yes, they were both good mousers, but yes they were also both good birders! Now, I'm on the other side of the fence. I don't have a cat, but do like to see the birds in the garden. Currently there is a very sneaky black cat working on an undercover mission in the back garden. The usual sign is no birds on the lawn or bird baths. It usually camps out in the border between both baths, and is completely invisible, even from overhead. Several mornings I have gone out and found it skulking in its hidey-hole, but it seems most reluctant to move off. Even when it knows it's been rumbled, it just slinks slowly away, through the hole in the bottom of the fence that we leave for the hedgehog! I've started a new tack now. First thing every morning I hurl the contents of a 1 litre jug of water over the general 'cat area'. I've had no luck so far, but it's only a matter of time. ;D Oh, and also I now put the hedgehog mess and old citrus peel down to make life uncomfortable for the little blighter! Spruance

Well Spruance, I know what you mean about changing sides of fences. I used to be a dog owner (lovely old boy he was too) but now have cats. Now I know some people have trouble with cats soiling in their gardens but what really pi**es me off is having to clean my little fellas shoes nearly every time we go out (including this morning) coz he's stepped in dog s*it. It's illegal NOT to pick it up but we see the same people letting the same dogs crap all over the place time and time again. Ah, that's better, rant over. Do carry on.

Hi Skarloey, Yes, I'm afraid I used to be a dog person too. Two Black Labs, 12 years each. It was so hard when we lost the last one, I never got around to having another. It's been 12 years without a dog now and 20 years without a cat. Part of me would still love to have another dog. Then of course there is the poop-scoop regulation these days. Also thinking back to my last baby elephant dog... The 'tinkling' on the garden, the digging in the garden and then running straight into the house. Eating his evening meal and immediately 'wiping his face' on the furniture and carpet. Not to forget the occasional treat of rolling in something on his walk and having to have a hosedown before being allowed back into the house. ...The dog that is! Oh, happy days! ;D Spruance

Please say that there is a much bigger fence than that as well! Something like the ones in Jurassic Park would be nice! ;D Spruance

I just happened across this online, whilst looking for something else.
Like they say in all of the TV Shows...Please don't try this at home!
How To Clean A Cat
1. Thoroughly clean the toilet.
2. Add the required amount of shampoo to the toilet water.
3. Obtain the cat and carry him to the bathroom.
4. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close both lids (you may need to stand on the lid so that he cannot escape). CAUTION: Do not get any part of your body too close to the edge, as his paws will be reaching out for anything he can find.
5. Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a "power wash and rinse" which I have found to be quite effective.
6. Have someone open the door to the outside and ensure that there are no people between the toilet and the outside door.
7. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift both lids.
8. The now-clean cat will rocket out of the toilet, and run outside where he will dry himself.
Sincerely, The DOG

Dear Rhoda, Your kittens are beautiful - I saw the picture when you posted them on the BBC board. I know it is a bit of a pain, but when our cats were young, we bought a boiling chicken, boiled it and fed them that when they had upset stomachs. They also had white fish (from M&S no less, no expense spared). I particularly remember the coley - which they loved but when it was cooking stank the place out! As for dry food - ours eat Dr Hills (available from vets) but we also give them wet food Felix As Good as it Looks.
