I spotted The Walking Stick Cabbage when brousing through the T & M veggies and thought just for a laugh I'd order a packet. Picture on HERE if anyone hasn't seen one before Has anyone else tried to grow them ;D I confess I haven't, but my understanding is that you need to get them into their second year to get results, which isn't easy with pests, wind rock etc. Best of luck Well, who would like to join me in growing them for a laugh. There are 45 seeds in the packet so if I sow say 5, there will be 40 going begging ;D Mmmmm who I wonder who would have the room and be up for a laugh. Add your name to the thread and we'll see how many want a go and split the seeds accordingly

They look fun, do they come with a stepladder for harvesting?
I only wish I had room for a veggie patch! Just room for me beans I'm afraid. I shall look forward to seeing the results though! ;D

How odd - I spotted that in the catalogue today too!
I'd love to give it a go but I don't think my tiny garden would be big enough!

I'd love to try it Chuckles. My only reservation is that the winds round here can get pretty strong at times. What do you think? I suppose I could stake it. We could have a competition to see which gets to be the tallest. And I think it'd be great to make a walking stick from it at the end as per LL's suggestion. ;D

Ooooooh goody we have some takers, this will be a really fun thing to grow. Great ideas LL and Shrub ;D and GH you could always plant it with a few normal cabbages and really wind them up at the lotty ;D I suffer with the wind too Shrub what am I saying We'll have to makes sure we have some staking in place before we start Keep your hand in your pocket OM I'll supply the seeds. I've only ordered one packet but there are 45 seeds in it so as long as we can have a couple each minimum. OM, once I have the seeds could we maybe have a Walking Stick thread in the trial section

I gave it a go when I was about ten, the first thing I grew after radish, grew about 6ft if I remember rightly and we got a good stick out of it at the end. Carried it with me when took the dog for a walk, people thought it was one hell of a stick to throw for a westie but it was really in case the bigger "feral" dogs came sniffing about.

Gosh, did it prove to be very strong then Paul? Will it take some weight? Yep, very sturdy. Get it varnished or somesuch to make sure it doesn't rot over time naturally, mine lasted a good few years without out

I'm really quite excited about the whole thing RBJ but we must remember what CPC said
" you need to get them into their second year to get results, which isn't easy with pests, wind rock etc "
Still it'll be fun trying and seeing the reaction from folk who see it growing and wonder what it is ;D ;D
