Our little wildlife pond is extremely fertile. there is so much spawn and activity it's permanently cloudy at the moment. Here's the question - underneath our trickly waterfall there is a build up of white foamy lather, very detergent-looking. But there's been no detergent anywhere near the pond so can anyone confirm it's what we suspect, froggie sperm?

I've had it confirmed that it's protein in the water, probably caused by all the activity and frog sperm, that's causing the foam so that's that one sorted.

Yep...tis protein (or more correctly, dissolved organic compounds) which stick to the surface of air bubbles and then rise to the top of the water and form a scum.
There are many (very expensive and complicated) contraptions that remove DOCs but they're really only suited to the serious koi enthusiast and marine fish keeper.

Thanks andy I'll leave the contraptions for those who need them. It's only a small patch which the waterfall must be aggravating and I don't feel I've got to remove it. Thanks again

Don't fish produce 'sperm' as well? The female lays eggs then the males fertilise them. Could also be a water quality problem as well, but I am sure it is your male fish being amorous! Keith

No Keith I doubt it - the water is far too cold for them to consider becoming amorous.

Would froglets be able to get out of your pond easily Snowowl - if not then the frogs won't use your pond for spawning.

Hi Rita yes we put a stepping stone ramp in the pond for anything that fell in so they would be able to get out. There is also some oxygenating plants in and water lillies but no froggies.

They come out to feed, obviously, but do spend quite some time in the water, when and how long, depends on time of day and weather. They like slugs and worms and they come out more at night!! Maybe next year, him and a mate will spawn in it!! ;D Keith

The weather isnt good for July, but we are much better off than England at the moment. We have seen the floods on the BBC news,it must be heart breaking to have your home wrecked and everything ruined. We have had a couple of nasty thunderstorms but some nice sunshine too. I wonder if we had summer in April and May? ps The frogs were quiet last night ;D db

But you do know, don't you SO, in your more rational moments, that you have absolutely nothing to fear from a Grass Snake! They are completely harmless! Really! Totally! ;D ;D ;D

Could anyone help me please??? I have looked everywhere on the internet and I can't find out, how old a frog has to be to spawn? ?? We put frog spawn in our new pond a year ago, which turned into hundreds of tadpoles..... but no frogs have returned to spawn There were plenty of little tiny frogs around the garden in the early summer..... but we have not seen any since. We have made it easy for them to get in and out. I just wonder if the frogs need to be over a year old before they spawn? ? If so maybe we'll get some next year?? (The original frog spawn from from my dads pond, not the wild. They get loads and loads . ) FF
