Once I got my 'eye in', yes I could SO. Gorgeous little things aren't they? ;D And in answer to your earlier question - I think frogs and newts and a number of other things like to feast on taddies, sadly.

That's good news SO. It's lovely watching them develop. I've been keeping a close eye on mine but there's no signs other than two!!!!! But we do have dragonfly larvae, a huge beetle (about 2" diameter) and newts which feast on taddies

Took some pics of mine today. Not too good 'cos they're getting very shy now, keep moving when this big threatening camera beast hovers over them!!

Wonderful pics SR and SO. You've got some fearsome looking little creatures there too SO - some kind of beetle larvae I think.

Its a wildlife pond Shrub i have no fish in there its full of tiny things and larvae as long as its not vine weeval im not botherd ;D I was hopeing the taddies will eat some of the smaller things when they get a bit bigger. I may have to pop a fish or 2 in later to keep the bugs down i will see.

I've got those caddis fly larvae - saw a few today SO. You know they wrap themselves in any old detritus they can find. First time I saw them, I was amazed. Realised it was some sort of pond life and looked in my pond book to see if I could find out what they were. Horrible looking things really, but fascinating!

Are your tadpoles eating one anothers tails? I have found throwing a slice of bread, unbuttered brown or white, gives them something to eat instead. The slice of bread gets to look like a carpet with a fringe of tadpole tails.

I've never seen taddies do that either, but I feed ours with pelleted rabbit food - they love it

Some of my tadpoles are looking like baby frogs now not many but when i saw them i coudnt believe it because most are still tadpole like with back legs. But a couple are real frog like they change so quickly now.

Great isn't SO to watch them change over time. I've found lots of little baby frogs hopping about the garden - so vulnerable but cant really do anything to help that. And then found a whopper tadpole in the pond last weekend. Not even got legs yet, so he/she is way behind the others.

We always find that. We have loads of tiny frogs but still tadpoles without legs in the pond. I guess it's some sort of insurance. The advance guard go ahead and take their chances, but if they don't make it, the rearguard is there!!

I seem to remember being told about those at school Shrub, some sort of freak mutant that eats its siblings and just gets bigger without developing properly into a froglet Can't recall what happens to them in the end though

I gave my little pond a major clean-out at the weekend, and discovered that my froggy is still around She's been hanging around now for 3 years, laying blind spawn , and I thought she had disappeared. Anyway, she didn't want to leave. Wouldn't even get out of the net when I wanted her to and jumped back in 3 times, even when it was totally empty!! ;D Later on I found her round by the filter, with a smaller, slimmer frog!! Hopefully she's got a toy-boy and I might get tadpoles next year!!

I just don't know how she came to be here . There are no ponds in any nearby garden, and now he (I'm assuming it's a he) has arrived too!! They would have had to cross a large cat-infested area of open grass to come from the next nearest houses that might have a pond! Still, I'm glad they did - a pond's gotta have a froggy or two, hasn't it? ;D

Just wanted to know if anyone has frogspawn yet? We haven't. I've seen a couple of frogs but they're not yet filling the pond with their debauched orgying . It's late this year. I think we usually have frogspawn by now. When I've posted this I'll go back and check when it was last year....should've thought of that before

A couple two doors up have a pond with frogs and I often see them while cutting the grass. Have to keep a good eye out! I decided to see if I could nab some. So I sunk a wash hand basin in the ground one Saturday, and had a look in it on the Sunday and lo and behold-there was a frog in it! Situated behind the shed and compost bin, voila! bit of chicken wire on top to keep leaves off..

Anyone yet to have any frog "stuff" in their pond. Usually, the frogs have descended on the pond by the beginning of feb and we have spawn stuff in the pond by the second or third week. Not even a single frog yet...anyone else have any ?

I have a newly dug pond - well - last October - and am off to the forest to get a bucket full of frogspawn to put in it. there is a natural spring - more like a small lake and you could practically walk on the stuff, then millions of tadpoles. After that - never see any frogs - do they all get eaten? There is already a beetle rushing around in the pond, but not much else - apart from bits and pieces blown in by the storms over the weekend. Have masses of marginal plants to put in. must get on with it.

Frog spawn allready? How fast are those French frogs? Out here they haven't even shown their noses yet, must still be hibernating.
I heard France got a beating. I hope storm things are not too bad and the bits can be removed easily.
