Thanks Plocket, that is a very strange thing indeed. ;D I take it that the little pink bits are the petals, and the twirly green bits are.....something else.

Nooooo! The green strands are the petals and I think the pink bits become seeds. They certainly all drop out of the plant when the flower is finished. Think of most alliums - they have long strandy petals, and that's basically what the Hair Allium has, except that they are green and wild looking!!! ;D
They are quite small flowers btw - that picture is probably very slightly larger than the real thing, but the stems are about 1m tall. They don't stand out like a lot of alliums, but I think they are fab! ;D

Jenny I have the same gladioli. I unfortunately placed them where they look not so fab so I have to rethink their place in the garden but they have done well. It is a pitty they don't flower for longer though.

They are a lovely shade of yellow/green Dutchy ; this year looked a bit sparse but still flowering - I rather like the colour - I think dark purple looks good with them as I have a self seeded Buddleia (sp) behind which complements them

Oh dear Rose have I touched a raw nerve. I actually bought a Buddleia this year - it forged ahead - but I did have so many self seeded ones and I let one carry on growing - is there something I should know

I couldn't resist putting this in although it's not completely green - it's been blooming for ages now and as you can see the flowers are still coming. They are much whiter when the blooms mature.
