I've been told by "someone in the know" that it is a female Broad-bodied chaser....
Lovely things hover flies - the markings are marvellous.

Before I got rid of these....I sat on the grass watching these ants 'farming' black flies on my dahlias....they were actually positioning the flies, picking them up and moving them about! as well as drinking their wee.....ok 'honeydew' if you look closely you can see that one of the larger flies is giving birth....some of them are 'born pregnant' and give birth to live young.

Some of the insects which were busy buzzing today, they air was filled with flying things (including hatching flying ants!) Great pics, this one is my favourite. Is'nt it wonderful to have them in the garden.

I think they're different RF....the dart I saw was quite large, with the wings flat and wrapped flat against the body...... ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?bf=2082Does it look like the one in your pic?

Altho lots of these sort of moths have some variation in colouring, especially in local populations....

Got a couple of other pics ...dunno whether he has lost a leg or they are supposed to be like that...perhaps that leg makes the noise that crickets make. Ugly brutes aren't they!! RF

I think it's amazing...insects are sposed to have 6 legs so it's definately lost one. It's really interesting...how big was it RF?

Those spines underneath it look lethal I'll stick the hoverflies on here today - bit prettier than that scary beastie This one was on the 'red' achillea I bought (more pink than red!) They do seem to like the echinacea x Tig
