Hey Amo - pleased that someone else has them - we get so many here and they can do so much damage. This was one last year that my OH picked up.... it was half dead but he doesn't mind...I do!! RF

Now then, bearing in mind I don't have a pond (yet) and the cattle trough I found it in is three feet off the ground, where did this skater come from? OM.

He flew in OM - they can grow wings to get from one lot of water to another (evidently!) I love the way you can see the water 'bend' under its weight - smashing piccie Tig

Where'd it go, where'd it go!?!?!?!? The 'bum choice' was to choose my trough in the first place, Amo - though I haven't used it for dipping since... Still skating around - I rather hope it's a female out laying eggs. I'd like a colony... OM.

Don't mind 'em so much if they are in the garden - it's the ones that insist on staying in the house that bother me!!! They can't half run fast ;D x Tig

Red Velvet Mite ? ( bigger version of the red spidermite (3 mm ) but better to have.) Said to be upholding the good health in your garden soil.

I sure have ;D And when I spotted this just now I couldn't resist. This was in the tray holding my polyanthus seedlings, how it got there is anybodies guess? I think it is a water boatman, though not sure, because when it flipped itself over it didn't appear to have enough long legs? x Tig

Fabulous pics Tig! I had to get my pond book out to have a nosey. Upshot - nothing resembling that in it. Certainly doesn't look like a water boatman - they're longer in the body, more oval than round whilst your little chap is more rounded I would say. Looks like one of the diving beetles but more than that I cannot tell!

Do you 'dip' a watering can in anything to have transported it? OM.

It was about half inch long OM, and yes I do use the water butts to fill the watering can, but with the rose on? I can't find a diving beetle that looks like it in any of my books - but there are only two shown in them!! It does say that they fly at night and I am not far from marshland, so perhaps it flew in Tig

I dont but Tig does SR! ;D OK I guess I wasn't paying proper attention! Perhaps you should get a new camera Shrub. I'm posting my water boatman on this thread for comparison. I wonder if your one is a whirligig beetle? Water boatman..........

You could be right SR about Tig's being a whirligig. Mine are a good bit smaller than half an inch though
