Anyone know what these are that appeared on 31st October in my lawn? They weren't too far from the trunk of an aged Rowan. I'm wondering if it is a part of it's dying process

Certainly does, RF... is it an edible one do you know?
Re wild mushroom picking/eating, has anyone the answer to this:
if you find a specimen 'eater', do you lessen the chances of ever finding another by taking it?
I've found the first puffball in three years (I think - it's still tiny) and I'm aware that left to it's own devices it will explode in a cloud of spores in a month or so. That, presumably is good for puffballs.
But I want to eat it... is that ruining my chances of finding another?
OM.

Both OH and I think that the photo that I took is probably from the Honey mushroom family but neither of us are certain and wouldn't eat it although they are edible.
As far as your Puff Ball mushroom is concerned, OH says that if it is a Puff ball and still very small he would expect loads more coming up around the place. As you say the spores explode everywhere...I know what I would do!!
Hope there are some wild mushrooms experts out there - we only pick the ones that we know 100%.

Just stumbled on this thread, there are some really beautiful photos on here. I have put this picture on my North Devon/Cornwall 2008 thread under holidays, but thought I would add it here as well. I have no idea what sort of fungi it is, but it was growing on a cliff top just off the footpath between Widemouth Bay and Bude.

Actually there were three together Dutchy - I thought that they were joined to start with, but then realised that they were separate but very close together.
I wouldn't eat them either - I had a look at the third one and it was full of worms, so even had I known what they were I wouldn't have been too bothered about them!!

I think (!) you're pretty safe with puffballs Amo - there's nothing like them that's poisonous which seems to be the case with pretty much anything else including ordinary field mushrooms...
Wot I did was to take some 3/4 inch slices off two sides of it, trim out the slugbites, cut into matchbox size bits and fry in butter til golden. Making my mouth water just reliving it...
